Maitland is a rural community in the Gore District and Southland Region of New Zealand.
Two schools historically operated in the area: Maitland School, established in 1896, [1] and Waikaka Valley School, established by 1877. [2]
The two schools merged in 1997 to form Willowbank School, which closed in 2016. [3] [4]
Gore is a town and district in the Southland region of the South Island of New Zealand. It has a resident population of 8,240 as of June 2023. Gore is known for its country music scene and hosts an annual country music festival. The town is also surrounded by farmland and is an important centre for agriculture in the region.

The Waikaka Branch was a branch line railway of the Main South Line that ran through agricultural and gold-mining country in Southland, New Zealand. It was constructed in 1907 and 1908, and was operated by the New Zealand Railways Department until its closure in 1962.
The Tapanui Branch was a railway line located near the border of the regions of Southland and Otago, New Zealand. Although the name suggests that it terminated in Tapanui, its furthest terminus was actually in Edievale. Construction of the line began in 1878 with the first section opened in 1880, and it operated until 1978, when it was destroyed by flooding from the Pomahaka River.
The Wyndham Branch, also known as the Glenham Branch, was a branch line railway in Southland, New Zealand. The first section was opened in 1882 and it operated until 1962. Although its name would imply that it terminated in Wyndham, an extension to a terminus in Glenham operated for forty years. It was operated by the New Zealand Railways Department.
The Waimea Plains Railway was a secondary railway line that linked the towns of Lumsden and Gore in northern Southland, New Zealand. It skirted the Hokonui Hills, and operated as a through route between 31 July 1880 and 1 April 1971, with the short section from Lumsden to Balfour continuing as the Balfour Branch until 15 January 1978.
Gore High School is one of two secondary schools in Gore, New Zealand, the other being St Peter's College, Gore. It is located on Coutts Road in the west of Gore.
Gore District Council is the territorial authority for the Gore District of New Zealand.
St Peters College is an integrated state secondary school in Gore, Southland, New Zealand. It was founded in 1969 as a private co-ed school and was the first Catholic co-educational boarding school established in New Zealand.

Lyall Scott Barry was a school teacher and inspector, and wrote a history of the Waimumu area in Southland. As a swimmer he won two medals at the 1950 British Empire Games.
Gore District is a district in the Southland Region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is named for Gore, the district's biggest township.
Derek Philip Fraser Turnbull was a New Zealand middle- and long-distance runner. He took up Masters athletics at the age of 40, and went on to set 25 Masters Athletics World Records.
State Highway 90 (SH 90) is a New Zealand State Highway connecting the town of Gore on State Highway 1 to the locality of Raes Junction on State Highway 8 via Tapanui, servicing the agricultural areas of eastern Southland and West Otago. It is mostly hilly and is just under 60 kilometres long.
Hugh Pearson McIntyre was a New Zealand farmer and freezing company chairman. He was born in Waikaka Valley, Southland, New Zealand, on 12 October 1888. He was one of the founders of the Alliance Freezing Company (Southland) in 1948.

It was first published in 1878 as The Mataura Ensign and changed to its current name in 1973. The newspaper features coverage of local government, sports and recreation, arts and entertainment, education, farming and business news. It is currently distributed to approximately 12,000 homes over a circulation area that includes Gore and the surrounding area that stretches from Mandeville and Waikaka in the north to Mataura in the south.
Waikaka is a town in Southland, New Zealand. It was a gold-mining town in the 19th century, starting in 1867 when gold was found. Over NZ£1,000,000 equivalent of gold was eventually extracted from this location. The town was served by the Waikaka branch railway.
