As the main shipping channel between the Indian and Pacific oceans, it is one of the most important shipping lanes in the world.

After Malacca was conquered by Portugal, the city became an area of conflict when the sultanates of Aceh and Johor attempted to take control from the Portuguese.

Malacca Botanical Garden is a botanical garden located in Ayer Keroh, Malacca, Malaysia. It was established in April 1984 as Ayer Keroh Recreational Forest, and got its present name on 1 June 2006. Recreational facilities here include the Malacca Forestry Museum, Malaysia Book Village, Prehistoric Garden, the Storyland, children's playgrounds, the Orang Asli Park, Deer Park, suspension bridge, watch towers and beautiful picnic spots. It spans over 359 hectares and as much as 10 hectares is used for a camping spot.

The Central Spine Road 2 or Malacca Strait Bridge is a proposed bridge that would connect Telok Gong, near Masjid Tanah, Malacca in Peninsular Malaysia to Rupat Island and Dumai in Sumatra island, Indonesia. The project has been submitted for government approval, and is expected to take 10 years to complete. Once completed, the 48-kilometre-long (30 mi) bridge will be the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world. The project will have two cable-stayed bridges and one suspension bridge, both the longest in the world.

Melaka Gateway is an off-shore development of artificial islands in Malacca, Malaysia. It was launched on 7 February 2014 by Malaysia's Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Najib Bin Tun Abdul Razak, witnessed by Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron. It was expected to be open in 2018 and finished completely by 2025. The project was planned to consist of four artificial islands including Melaka Island and one adjacent natural island – Panjang Island, with mixed residential and commercial development, leisure-cum-tourism amenities, free-trade zone, port and industrial zone. However, a series of obstacles led to the project scaled down to only Melaka Island alone with a cruise terminal.

Jalan Syed Abdullah Aziz or Malacca Coastal Highway, Federal Route 192, is a coastal highway in Malacca City, Malacca, Malaysia. This coastal highway was built as a bypass of the Malacca City Centre and was built to shorten the travel distance between Bandar Hilir and Kampung Limbongan town area from 10 km (estimated) to 5 km (estimated).
Upeh Island is an islet located 600 metres off the coast of the town of Klebang in the Malaysian state of Malacca. It used to be one of the places in the state with the highest number of hawksbill turtle landings and nesting sites. But a series of ongoing land reclamation projects near the island cause rapid coastal erosion, degradation of its beach and a dwindling number of turtle landings at the islet for nesting and egg laying. A now-abandoned resort can be seen within the islet's dense forest.
