Marc Handler is an American writer, producer and voice director best known for his work on Cowboy Bebop , Astro Boy , FLCL , Stitch & Ai , and Voltron . He was the first American to work in Japan as a story editor on a Japanese anime series, the 2003 Astro Boy series. [1] [2] [3]

Early life

Handler was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. As a young adult, he formed the Subject to Change Theatre Troupe, which was active in political causes such as support for Nelson Mandela in South Africa. He studied at the University of Southern California where he earned two master's degrees in directing theatre and writing for film and television. [4]

Career

Handler wrote original episodes for American animation series such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles , Widget the World Watcher , and Denver, the Last Dinosaur . He became involved in the first major wave of imported anime for Western audiences, writing English language scripts and adaptations for Voltron , Saber Rider and Transformers . As anime evolved, he worked as a writer and voice director on projects such as Cowboy Bebop (TV series and film), FLCL , Ghost in the Shell , Steamboy , and Metropolis . He also voice directed Stephen Chow in Hong Kong for the English language version of Shaolin Soccer , and wrote episodes for the 2011–2012 revival of Power Rangers . [2] [4] [5] Handler was later involved in bringing original Chinese and South Korean animation to the West, including Stitch & Ai , Peking Duckling, and Mix Master Final Force.

Handler was a guest speaker at the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilization in Beijing in 2019. [6] He has written two books on writing and presentations which were published by Beijing University Press in China and Freelec Publishers in Korea. [7]

Handler is a member of the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild. He has also been a lecturer at the University of Southern California and Glendale College. [8]

Personal life

Handler is married to Annet Yorn. They have one son, Kai Handler. They live alternately in Shanghai, China and Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Toonami is an American late-night television programming block that broadcasts Japanese anime and American action animation. Spike Spiegel is a fictional character introduced as the protagonist of the 1998 anime series Cowboy Bebop. Spike is a former member of the criminal Red Dragon Syndicate, who left by faking his death after falling in love with a woman named Julia. He is first introduced as the partner of Jet Black, captain of the spaceship Bebop: the two are legalized bounty hunters pursuing criminals across the populated planets and moons of the Solar System. During his adventures on board the Bebop, he is drawn back into a bitter feud with Vicious, a rival from the Syndicate who seeks to kill him.

Eagle Riders is an animated television adaptation of the Japanese anime series Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter, which have been combined. It was produced by Saban Entertainment. 65 episodes aired in Australia on Network Ten from August 14, 1997, to December 4, 1997. In the United States, 13 episodes had previously aired in first-run syndication during the fall of 1996 and 1997.

Peter Eugene Keefe was an American television producer best known for creating the popular series Voltron, an English dubbed combination of Beast King GoLion, and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV, two similar, but unrelated “mecha” anime series originally created and produced by Toei Animation. Keefe's work on the series is credited with introducing American audiences to Japanese animation and influenced later children's programs like the Dragon Ball, Pokémon, and Power Rangers franchises., although Japanese programs, including such programs as Astro Boy, and Ultraman, had aired on American television prior to the premiere of Voltron.
