Marcia A. Karrow (born March 10,1959) is an American politician affiliated with the Republican Party. She is currently serving as the mayor of Flemington,New Jersey. She previously served in the New Jersey State Senate representing the 23rd Legislative District from February 9,2009 to November 23,2009. She previously served for three years in the General Assembly representing the same district she represented in the Senate.
In the assembly,Karrow was one of two assemblymembers representing the 23rd district,the other being Michael J. Doherty. When Leonard Lance resigned from the State Senate after his election to the U.S. House of Representatives,Karrow and Doherty ran against each other in a January 24,2009 special election convention for the right to succeed him,with Karrow winning. However,Doherty decided to run against Karrow again in the June 2009 Republican primary election for the State Senate seat,and he defeated her. After going on to win the general election in November of that year against Democrat Harvey Baron,Doherty succeeded Karrow in the State Senate on November 23,2009.
A 1977 graduate of Hunterdon Central Regional High School, [1] Karrow graduated with a B.A. from Smith College in History (1981),an M.A. from the University of Michigan in Classical Archaeology (1985) and was awarded a M.B.A. from Baruch College of the City University of New York in 1991 (Finance/Budget). [2]
Karrow's father,Sol,served on the borough council in Flemington,New Jersey from 1963 to 1980 and owned a men's shop on Main Street in the town. [3]
Karrow served on the Raritan Township Committee from 1994 to 2002,as Deputy Mayor in 1996,and as Mayor in 1998. She served on the Raritan Township Planning Board from 1992 to 1993 and in 1998. She served on the Raritan Township Environmental Commission from 1994,the Raritan Township Open Space Advisory Committee from 1997,the Raritan Township Agricultural Advisory Board from 1999,and on the Raritan Township Economic Development Committee from 1994 to 1996. She also served on the Flemington Partnership for Progress on its board of directors / chair,Economic Restructuring from 1994 to 1997 and on the Governor's Planning Council on Aging in 1994. Karrow was a member of the Raritan Valley Community College Search Committee from 1995 to 1998. [4]
Karrow has also served on the Hunterdon County Health and Human Services Advisory Council from 1995 to 1998,and as its Vice Chair in 1997;Hunterdon County Mental Health Board from 1993 to 1998;Hunterdon County Work Force Investment Board from 1997;Hunterdon County Planning Board Growth Management Task Force on Industrial and Commercial Growth from 1996;Hunterdon Economic Partnership Board of Directors in 1998;Hunterdon County Municipal Officers Association as its President from 1997 to 1998;and the Hunterdon County Council on Aging from 1993 to 1996. Karrow served on the Hunterdon County Board of Chosen Freeholders beginning in 1999,and served as the Freeholder Director from 1999 to 2000. As a Freeholder,Karrow served on the Hunterdon County Planning Board (Liaison),Health and Human Services (Liaison),Hunterdon County Economic Partnership (Liaison),Work Force Investment Board (Member),Polytech Special Sub-Committee (Member) and the Hunterdon County Agriculture Development Board (Liaison). Karrow was elected to the Assembly on November 8,2005,filling the seat of fellow Republican Connie Myers,who did not run for reelection and had held the seat since 1996. In the Assembly she served on the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee,the Budget Committee,and the State House Commission. [2] She resigned from her Assembly seat on February 9,2009 when she is sworn into the State Senate.
Karrow was appointed to seats on the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee,the Senate Labor Committee,and the State's Capital Budget Commission by Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean,Jr. after her swearing into the Senate. [5] Lance served as Ranking Minority Member of the Budget and Appropriations Committee during his last year in the Senate.
On November 20,2008,Karrow announced her intention to run for the State Senate seat vacated by Leonard Lance,who was elected to represent the 7th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. [6] Karrow's opponent in the race was Assemblyman Michael J. Doherty. [7] Hunterdon County Freeholder Matt Holt originally planned to run for the vacancy as well,but dropped out to run for one of the Assembly vacancies opened up by Karrow or Doherty. [8]
On January 24,2009,a special election was held by a convention of Republican committee members from Hunterdon and Warren counties. Karrow defeated Doherty in the special election by a margin of 195 votes to 143. Doherty announced he would run against Karrow a second time in the June 2009 primary,when she would be running as the incumbent. [9]
The Hunterdon and Warren county Republican committee members held another special convention on February 21,2009 to fill Karrow's vacant Assembly seat. In the contest,Warren County Freeholder John DiMaio defeated Hunterdon County Freeholders Matt Holt and Erik Peterson. [10] [11]
On June 2,2009,Doherty defeated Karrow in the Republican Senate primary by a margin of 52%-48%. [12] [13] Doherty went on to win the November special election,defeating Democratic candidate Harvey Baron to fill the remaining two years of the term. [14] Karrow's Senate term ended on November 23,2009 when Doherty was sworn into office. [15]
In November 2009,Karrow was named a member of the transition team of Governor-Elect Chris Christie,serving as chair of the subcommittee on environmental protection. [16] She then was appointed Chair by Governor Christie under his Executive Order 12 to review issues with the Council on Affordable Housing.
Karrow was chosen in December 2010 to serve as Executive Director of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission,succeeding Robert Ceberio,who had held the position for eight years. [17] [18] After the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority took over the responsibilities of the Meadowlands Commission,Karrow's role as director ended in October 2015. [19]
Karrow later served as the administrator of Middlesex,New Jersey from 2019 until her retirement in 2022. [3] She would then announce her run for Mayor of Flemington,New Jersey (she had moved back to Flemington from neighboring Raritan Township in 2005) against incumbent Democrat Betsy Driver. She defeated Driver in the November 2022 election by 94 votes. [20]
Hunterdon County is a county located in the western section of the U.S. state of New Jersey. At the 2020 census,the county was the state's 18th-most populous county,with a population of 128,947,its highest decennial count ever and an increase of 598 (+0.5%) from the 2010 census count of 128,349,which in turn reflected an increase of 6,360 (5.2%) from the 121,989 counted in the 2000 census. Its county seat is Flemington. The county is part of the Central Jersey region of the state.
Delaware Township is a township in Hunterdon County,in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Part of the township is on the Hunterdon Plateau,while the southern portions are in the Amwell Valley. As of the 2020 United States census,the township's population was 4,560,a decrease of three people (−0.1%) from the 2010 census count of 4,563,which in turn reflected an increase of 85 (+1.9%) from the 4,478 counted in the 2000 census.
Flemington is a borough in and the county seat of Hunterdon County,in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Most of the borough is located in the Amwell Valley,a low-lying area of the Newark Basin,and the Raritan Valley,the South Branch of the Raritan River,which flows through the center of Flemington. Northwestern portions of the borough sit on the Hunterdon Plateau. As of the 2020 United States census,the borough's population was 4,876,its highest decennial count ever and an increase of 295 (+6.4%) from the 2010 census count of 4,581,which in turn reflected an increase of 381 (+9.1%) from the 4,200 counted in the 2000 census.
Raritan Township is a township in Hunterdon County,in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census,the township's population was 23,447,an increase of 1,262 (+5.7%) from the 2010 census count of 22,185,which in turn reflected an increase of 2,376 (+12.0%) from the 19,809 counted in the 2000 census. The township is located within the heart of the Amwell Valley and Raritan Valley regions,as the South Branch of the Raritan River flows through the center of the township. The northwestern portion of the township is located on the Hunterdon Plateau.
Readington Township is a township located in the easternmost portion of Hunterdon County,in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census,the township's population was 16,128,an increase of two people (+0.0%) from the 2010 census count of 16,126,which in turn reflected an increase of 323 (+2.0%) from the 15,803 counted in the 2000 census.
Michael J. Doherty is an American Republican Party politician who has served as the surrogate of Warren County,New Jersey since November 30,2022. He previously served in the New Jersey Senate representing the 23rd Legislative District. He was sworn into the State Senate on November 23,2009,having won the seat held by Marcia A. Karrow,who had earlier been selected by a party convention to succeed Leonard Lance after his election to the United States House of Representatives. Doherty served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2002 to 2009.
Connie Myers is an American Republican Party politician,who served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 1996 to 2006,where she represented the 23rd Legislative District. Myers served in the Assembly on the Appropriations Committee and the Regulatory Oversight Committee.
Hunterdon Central Regional High School is a comprehensive,four-year public high school,and regional school district that serves students from five municipalities in east central Hunterdon County,in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Students from Delaware Township,East Amwell Township,Flemington,Raritan Township and Readington Township attend the school.
Scott T. Rumana is an Assyrian-American Republican Party politician,and was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly,where he represented the 40th legislative district from January 8,2008 until his resignation on October 20,2016. On October 20,2016,he was confirmed by the New Jersey Senate as a judge of the New Jersey Superior Court for Passaic County. A general election was held in the U.S. state of New Jersey on November 3,2009. Primary elections were held on June 2. Most state positions were up in this election cycle,which includes all 80 seats in the New Jersey General Assembly,as well as Governor and Lieutenant Governor. In addition to the State Legislative elections,numerous county offices and freeholders in addition to municipal offices were up for election. There was one statewide ballot question. Some counties and municipalities may have had local ballot questions as well. Non-partisan local elections,some school board elections,and some fire district elections also happened throughout the year.
John DiMaio is an American Republican Party politician,who was selected on February 21,2009 to fill the New Jersey General Assembly seat for the 23rd legislative district vacated by Marcia A. Karrow,after Karrow filled the vacancy for the New Jersey Senate in the same district. He has been co-chair of the Republican Conference,alongside Nancy Munoz,since January 14,2020. He was elected Minority Leader of the General Assembly after Jon Bramnick was elected to the State Senate.
Erik C. Peterson is an American Republican Party politician who represents the 23rd Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly. Peterson,who previously served on the Hunterdon County Board of Chosen Freeholders,replaced Assemblyman Michael J. Doherty,who was elected to the New Jersey Senate. He was sworn in on December 7,2009,to fill Doherty's vacant Assembly seat.

The district includes the Hunterdon County municipalities of Alexandria Township,Bethlehem Township,Bloomsbury,Califon,Franklin Township,Glen Gardner,Hampton,Holland Township,Lebanon Township,Milford,Tewksbury Township and Union Township,the Somerset County municipalities of Bedminster Township,Bound Brook,Bridgewater Township,Manville,and Raritan.

Incumbent senator Cory Booker was first elected in a 2013 special election to complete the term of fellow Democrat Frank Lautenberg,who died in office. Booker defeated Jeff Bell (R) to win a first full term.
Elizabeth Maher Muoio is an American Democratic Party politician who serves as the Treasurer of New Jersey. Previously,she had been a member of the New Jersey General Assembly,the lower house of the New Jersey Legislature,representing the 15th Legislative District from 2015 to 2018. She had also served as a councilwoman from the borough of Pennington and a Mercer County Freeholder.
