Mari Selvaraj is an Indian film director and screenwriter who works in the Tamil film industry. He worked as an assistant director to Ram. He made his directorial debut with Pariyerum Perumal (2018), which opened to highly positive reviews and received many awards and accolades.

Film career

Mari Selvaraj entered the Tamil film industry in 2006. He initially planned to become a director, but later joined Ram, as an assistant director in three films: Kattradhu Thamizh (2007), Thanga Meenkal (2013), and Taramani (2017). [3]

In 2018, he made his directorial debut with Pariyerum Perumal, which garnered critical acclaim and was one of the successful films of the year. Afterwards, he has directed Karnan (2021), Maamannan (2023) and Vaazhai (2024).

Annakili is a 1976 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film, directed by Devaraj–Mohan and written by Panchu Arunachalam from a story by R. Selvaraj. The film stars Sivakumar and Sujatha with S. V. Subbaiah, Srikanth, Thengai Srinivasan and Fatafat Jayalaxmi in supporting roles. It was produced by S. P. Thamizharasi under the production banner SPT Films. The film's soundtrack was composed by Ilaiyaraaja, who made his debut in film. A. Somasundaram and Kandasamy handled cinematography and editing respectively.

Pariyerum Perumal is a 2018 Indian Tamil-language drama film, written and directed by Mari Selvaraj in his directorial debut and produced by Pa. Ranjith. The film stars Kathir and Anandhi, while Yogi Babu and G. Marimuthu appear in supporting roles. It follows Pariyan (Kathir), who belongs to an oppressed caste and enters into law college with a lot of hope, and strikes up a friendship with Jothi Mahalakshmi (Anandhi), who belongs to an upper caste, which irks Jothi's family members. He wakes up to the realities of caste oppression and discrimination, after being harassed by them.

Raatchasi (transl.Demoness) is a 2019 Indian Tamil-language social drama film, written and directed by Syed Gowthamraj, and produced by S. R. Prakashbabu and S. R. Prabhu under the banner of Dream Warrior Pictures. The film stars Jyothika, while Hareesh Peradi, Poornima Bhagyaraj, Sathyan, Nagineedu, and Aruldoss play supporting roles. Vaazhai is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language children's drama film written, co-produced and directed by Mari Selvaraj. It is produced by Disney+ Hotstar, Navvi Studios and Farmer’s Master Plan Production. The film stars debutantes Ponvel M., Raghul R., Kalaiyarasan and Nikhila Vimal in the lead roles, alongside J. Satish Kumar, Dhivya Duraisamy, Karnan Janaki and Nivedita Rajappan. Partially based on Selvaraj's life, in the film, Sivanaindhan works at a banana plantation while going to school; however, he hates working there.
