Maria Byrne (born 27 November 1967) is an Irish Fine Gael politician who has served as a Senator for the Agricultural Panel since April 2021. [1] She was previously a senator from 2016 to 2020.
She previously served as a member of Limerick City and County Council from 1999 up until her election to Seanad Éireann. [2] During her time on the Council,she also served as Mayor of Limerick from 2010 to 2011.
She was the Fine Gael Seanad spokesperson for Education and Skills. At the 2020 general election,she was a Fine Gael candidate for Dáil Éireann in the Limerick City constituency,but was not elected. [2] She lost her Seanad seat at the 2020 Seanad election,but was a successful candidate at the 2021 Seanad by-elections. [3]

There are 60 seats in the Seanad:43 were elected on five vocational panels by serving politicians,for which polling closed on 30 March 2020;6 were elected in two university constituencies,for which polling closed on 31 March 2020;and 11 were nominated by the Taoiseach on 27 June 2020. It will remain in office until the close of poll for the 27th Seanad,which is scheduled for 30 January 2025.
