"Maria I'm Drunk" is a song by American rapper and singer Travis Scott, featuring vocals from Canadian singer Justin Bieber and fellow American rapper Young Thug. It was released as the eleventh track in Scott's Rodeo (2015) album. [2]
On September 7, 2018, Scott spoke about the song's lengthy four-year delay, he said on Twitter "Maria I’m drunk can finally be stream. It's been a legit 4 years don't ask me what took so long !!! I’m just happy I can listen to it." [3] It was made available for online streaming for the first time as it was originally made accessible to only those who paid for the album. [4]
The lack of immediate release was described by Complex as a tactic "used by many artists who have used album-exclusives to rack in more coin." [5] [6] The song was believed to have been not published for years because labels were trying "to suppress Bieber's rap career." [7]
Scott and Bieber performed the song in a New York record release party. [8] Scott revealed that the collaboration happened because "Bieber had reached out to him" and because he had a "song in mind". Scott stated that "As soon as I got to the studio he played it for me...He already had [his rap verse on it] done. That shit was fucking crazy. I went back in and produced over it. That shit's so pure!". [9]
The song begins with swirling synths, backup vocals, and moody atmospherics." In it, Scott calls out for a figure named Maria over a "dissonant, piano riff" alongside Young Thug who lyrically invites the figure to "call your friends and get drunk". Bieber opens the second verse by singing "in a fast and fierce manner with the intensity of a rap" before shifting to a R&B tempo. [10] [11]
