Marina Ann Hatzakis (born 7 March 1972 in Sydney) is an Australian former rower - a dual Olympian who represented at world championships between 1993 and 2000.
Hatzakis' senior club rowing was from the Queensland University Boat Club in Brisbane and later at the UTS Haberfield Rowing Club in Sydney.
From 1993 to 1996 and in 2000 Hatzakis was selected as Queensland's single sculls representative to contest the Nell Slatter Trophy at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. [1] In 1996 she also stroked Queensland's women's coxless four contesting the ULVA Trophy. [2] In 1997 Hatzakis relocated to Sydney to pursue her national aspirations. That year she was selected to stroke the New South Wales women's coxless four to contest the ULVA Trophy. [3]
She contested national championship titles at numerous Australian Rowing Championships. She contested the open women's single scull in QUBC colours in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and in black and white for UTS Haberfield in 1997 and 2000. [4]
Hatzakis' Australian representative debut came in 1993 as a sculler. She competed at the 1993 World Rowing Championships in Racice in a double scull with Jenny Luff and placed ninth overall. [5]
In 1994 she moved into the Australian senior women's quad scull. She was in the quad at the 1994 World Rowing Championships in Indianapolis who rowed to fourth place. [5] Hatzakis and Sally Newmarch were constant in the quad for the next three years. With Adair Ferguson and Fleur Spriggs they contested the 1995 World Rowing Championships in Tampere placing thirteenth and then with Jane Robinson and Bronwyn Roye they competed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics finishing ninth overall. [5] In Atlanta Hatzakis also doubled up with Bronwyn Roye in the women's double scull and finished in fourth place. [5]
Hatzakis rowed in 1997 at the World Rowing Cup I with Bronwyn Roye in a double scull but was not selected for World Championships that year. She came back into the senior quad in 1998 with Newmarch, Robinson and Roye and after racing at the World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne, they competed at the 1998 World Rowing Championships in Cologne and won a bronze medal. Hatzakis' final two years of representative rowing was with Roye in the Australian women's double scull. They raced at the 1999 World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne and then at the 1999 World Rowing Championships in St Catharines, Canada to a sixth-place finish. [5] Their campaign in the 2000 Olympic year started at two World Rowing Cups in Europe and then at Sydney 2000 they placed fourth in their heat and fought through a repechage to make the final in which they finished last for an overall sixth ranking. Sally Newmarch, now known as Sally Callie, is an Australian former rower – a four-time national champion, a medal winning national representative who competed at World Rowing Championships from 1993 to 2004 and a three time Olympian.
Amber Jae Halliday is a former rower and cyclist from Adelaide, South Australia. She is an Australian national champion, a dual Olympian and a three-time world-champion in lightweight rowing. She rowed for South Australia on nine occasions for six victories in Interstate Regattas and won numerous Australian titles at the Australian National Championships.
Marguerite Houston is an Australian former lightweight rower. She is an Australian national champion, an Olympian and two-time World Champion. She contested state representative events at nine successive Australian Rowing Championships.
Olympia Aldersey is an Australian rower. She is an Australian national champion, a dual Olympian and was a 2019 World Champion in the coxless four. In 2014 she set a world's fastest ever time (6:37.31) in a women's double scull over 2000m, a record which has stood since. She rowed in the Australian women's eight at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Timothy George McLaren is an Australian former Olympian rower and high-performance international rowing coach. He was a four-time Australian national champion, a national representative and won a silver medal in the men's quad scull at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Rebecca Susan Joyce is an Australian former rower, a sculler in the lightweight division. She was a five-time national champion, a 1995 world champion and Olympic medal winner.
Victoria Roberts is an Australian former rower, a dual Olympian, and a three-time world champion. She went back-to-back winning the coxless four World Championship title in 2001 and 2002.
Bronwyn Roye is an Australian former rower. She is a six-time national champion, a medalist at World Championships and a dual Olympian who raced in two Australian sculling events at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Paul Anthony Thompson MBE is an Australian elite level rowing coach and former rower. As a rower he was an Australian under-age champion, won a silver medal at the 1985 U23 World Championships and rowed in senior King's Cup eights for both South Australia and New South Wales. He has coached Australian and British crews to World Championship titles and Olympic medals including taking Kate Slatter and Megan Still to Australia's first women's Olympic rowing gold at Atlanta 1996. By 2012 he was Great Britain's head coach for women and lightweights and took British crews to three gold and two silver medals at London 2012. Since 2022 he has been Rowing Australia's High Performance Director.
Laura Dunn is an Australian former lightweight rower. She is a three-time national champion and won a silver medal at the 2014 World Rowing Championships.
Sarah Pound is an Australian former representative lightweight rower. She is a three-time national champion and won a silver medal at the 2014 World Rowing Championships.
Amy James is an Australian representative lightweight rower. She is a two-time national champion and won a silver medal at the 2017 World Rowing Championships.
Andrew Black is an Australian former representative lightweight rower. He won a bronze medal at the 2000 World Rowing Championships.
Jennifer Luff is an Australian former representative rower. In a nine year career at the elite level between 1988 and 1996 she won sixteen Australian national titles, raced for Australia at five World Rowing Championships and competed at the 1992 and the 1996 Summer Olympics. In 1990 and 1992 she won the full set of all three open women's sculling boat titles at the Australian Rowing Championships and mirrored that feat in 1995 when she won all three possible open women's titles in sweep-oared boats.
Emmelia Anne Snook is an Australian former representative rower. In a short six year career at the elite level, Snook was a twelve-time national champion, represented four times at World Rowing Championships and competed in the women's coxless four event at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Paul Francis Rowe was an Australian representative rower and elite level rowing coach. He was an eight-time Australian national champion in both sweep oared and sculling boats across both lightweight and open divisions. He was Australia's lightweight sculling representative at the 1975 World Rowing Championships. He coached scullers and crews to three Australia national title wins and to world championships and to Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
Hamish Playfair is an Australian rower. He is a four-time national champion and an Australian representative at World Rowing Championships.
Katrina Bateman is an Australian former representative rower. She is a ten-time Australian national champion, winning four national titles in the single year of 2015 and rowing in successful Victorian Queen's Cup crews for six consecutive years from 2011-2016. She was twice a medallist at underage world championships and has won gold, silver and bronze medals at World Rowing Cups between 2013 and 2019.
