Mark Young is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the Fairfield Stags.
Young attended Brookline High School in Brookline, Massachusetts. As a senior, he was named New England's Athlete of the Year, while averaging 30.9 points and 18 rebounds per game. [1] [2] He finished his high school career with over 1,500 points and set a single-game school record with 42 points scored.
Young accepted a basketball scholarship from Fairfield University, over Duke University and the College of the Holy Cross, to play under head coach Fred Barakat. [3] [4] He was a teammate of Joe DeSantis and became a four-year starter at center. [5] As a sophomore, he contributed to the team having a 13-0 record at home. He tallied 19 rebounds against Merrimack College. [6]
As a junior, he ranked sixth nationally in field goal percentage (.629), which was also a New England record, after making 149 of 237 attempts. He averaged 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest. His best game came against the University of Dayton in the 1978 National Invitation Tournament, where he scored 32 points.
As a senior, he led the Stags in scoring (20.9) and rebounding (9.0), while setting a school single-season record with 193 free throws made and becoming the fifth player in school history to surpass 800 career rebounds. [7]
Young left school as the second all-time leading scorer (1,643 points), fifth in rebounds (808), third in field goal percentage (.558), holding Fairfield records in free throws made (543) and attempted (697). [8] He played in 106 games and scored over 30 points in five of those contests.
In 1985, he was inducted as a member of the Fairfield Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Honor Roll. [7] [9]
Young was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round (41st overall) of the 1979 NBA draft. He was released before the start of the season and never played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played in Europe during the 1979–80 season. [10] Young signed with Maccabi Haifa B.C. of the Israeli Basketball Premier League in 1981. [11]

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with NCAA Division I. Its current 11 full members are located in four Northeastern states: Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Maryland. It was announced on October 23, 2023 that Sacred Heart University and Merrimack College will join the conference beginning in the 2024-25 season.

Joe DeSantis is the color commentator for the radio and TV broadcasts of Fairfield Stags men's basketball and is a member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. He was the second longest tenured head men's basketball coach at Quinnipiac University.
Darren Douglas Phillip is an American professional basketball player. Phillip a.k.a. "Primal Fear" is also a well known streetball player on the basketball courts of the New York City summer leagues. He was the 2000 NCAA Division I men's basketball season rebounding leader.
Tim O'Toole is an American college basketball coach, currently the associate head coach at Pittsburgh. He previously was the tenth head coach of the Fairfield Stags men's basketball team. He also worked in the media as an ESPN college basketball analyst and was the color analyst for St. John's University's radio broadcasts with John Minko.
Marcus Gilbert is an American professional basketball player. Previously, Gilbert played college basketball for Fairfield University where he was All-MAAC in 2015 and 2016.
Maurice Barrow is an American former professional basketball player. He played college basketball for Fairfield University before playing professionally in Austria and Australia.
Troy Bradford is a former American professional basketball player who played the point guard position. Bradford played college basketball for Fairfield University where he was named a preseason All-American in 1989 and 1st team Small American for three straight years between 1987 and 1989.

They played their home games at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut and Alumni Hall in Fairfield, Connecticut as members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and were led by eighth year head coach Sydney Johnson. They finished the 2018–19 season 9–22 overall, 6–12 in MAAC play to finish in a three-way tie for ninth place. As the 10th seed in the 2019 MAAC tournament, they were defeated by No. 7 seed Manhattan in the first round 53–57.

They finished the season 10–17, 7–11 in MAAC play to finish in a tie for sixth place. As the No. 7 seed in the MAAC tournament, they defeated No. 10 seed Manhattan in the first round, upset No. 2 seed Monmouth in the quarterfinals, upset No. 3 seed Saint Peter's in the semifinals to reach the championship game, where they lost to No. 9 seed Iona 51–60.
