History
Mary Star of the Sea was established in 1954 by Mary Star of the Sea Parish. There is also a Mary Star of the Sea elementary in San Pedro, which was founded in 1922. [3]
In 1959, the Archdiocese created a separate boys' high school, Fermin Lasuen High School, and Mary Star of the Sea was transitioned over several years to a girls' school (the Class of 1962 was the last co-ed class). Fermin Lasuen was closed in 1971, and MSoS once again became coeducational. [4]
The school was originally located on 8th Street and moved to a brand new campus on Taper Avenue in the fall of 2007.
On June 10, 2021, the girls' basketball team captured the school's first CIF-Southern Section sports championship with a 54–50 victory over Agoura of Agoura Hills for the Division 4-AA title in front of a large standing room only crowd at Mary Star High.

The San Pedro Pastoral Region is a pastoral region of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in the Roman Catholic Church. It covers the City of Long Beach and southern Los Angeles County in California, with its headquarters in Lakewood. In 1986, Los Angeles Archbishop Roger Mahony divided the archdiocese into five pastoral regions to make church leaders more accessible to parishioners. Saint Basil Academy was a private, Ukrainian Catholic, all-girls high school in Abington, Pennsylvania. It is located in the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia and also within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Saint Basil Academy was established in 1931 by the Sisters of Saint Basil. On October 8, 2020, Saint Basil Academy announced that it will close its doors at the end of the 2020-2021 school year. The last class graduated on June 3, 2021.
Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic parish located in San Pedro, California, dedicated to Our Lady, Star of the Sea. Located on a hill overlooking the Port of Los Angeles, Mary Star of the Sea has sometimes been known as the "Fishermen’s Parish" because of its close ties with the fishing and cannery community in San Pedro. Established in 1889, the parish is one of the oldest in the Los Angeles Archdiocese. The present church, built in 1958, is the third church to serve the parish.
