The 2004 Washington gubernatorial election was held on November 2,2004. The race gained national attention for its legal twists and extremely close finish,among the closest political races in United States election history. Republican Dino Rossi was declared the winner in the initial automated count and again in a subsequent automated recount,but after a second recount done by hand,Democrat Christine Gregoire took the lead by a margin of 129 votes.
Andersen v. King County,138 P.3d 963,formerly Andersen v. Sims,is a Washington Supreme Court case in which eight lesbian and gay couples sued King County and the state of Washington for denying them marriage licenses under the state's 1998 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA),which defined marriage as between a man and a woman. The court ruled that banning same-sex marriage is constitutional since the legislature could reasonably believe it furthers the government interest in promoting procreation.
Same-sex marriage in Washington has been legally recognized since December 6,2012. On February 13,2012,Governor Christine Gregoire signed legislation that established full marriage rights for same-sex couples in the state of Washington. Opponents mounted a challenge that required voters to approve the statute at a referendum,which they did on November 6. The law took effect on December 6,and the first marriages were celebrated on December 9. Within a couple of days,more than 600 marriage licenses were issued to same-sex couples in King County alone.

The 2009 Washington Referendum 71 (R-71) legalized domestic partnership in Washington state,the first statewide referendum in the United States that extended to LGBT people the rights and responsibility of domestic partnership. The bill had passed State Legislature,and it was signed into law by the Governor in May 2009,but opponents gathered enough signatures to put the measure before the voters,who returned ballots by mail over three weeks ending on November 3,2009,approving the measure 53% to 47%. The new law went into effect 30 days later,on December 3,2009.
Monica Marie Márquez is an associate justice of the Colorado Supreme Court. Previously a Deputy Colorado Attorney General,she was appointed by Governor Bill Ritter to the Supreme Court in 2010 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey. LGBT people are fully protected from discrimination in the areas of employment,housing and public accommodations;the state enacting comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation regarding sexual orientation and gender identity in 2006. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2012,and same-sex couples are allowed to adopt. Conversion therapy on minors has also been illegal since 2018.

On April 4,2011,Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick nominated her to that position and she was confirmed by the Governor's Council on May 4,2011. She took the oath of office on June 8,2011.

Steven Charles González is an American lawyer and jurist who has served as the Chief Justice of the Washington Supreme Court since January 11,2021. Alexander,who retired upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75.
Robert French Utter was an American attorney and jurist from Washington. He served as a King County Superior Court judge from 1964 until his appointment to the Washington Court of Appeals in 1968. In 1971 he was appointed to the Washington Supreme Court,where he served for 23 years,including two years as the chief justice. Utter is known for his opposition to the death penalty. He dissented in two dozen cases on capital punishment while on the court and resigned in 1995 in protest of it. After resigning from the court,Utter taught the first state constitutional law course in Washington State at the University of Puget Sound School of Law and traveled around the world to help developing nations create independent judiciaries. He died in 2014.
Raquel Devahl Montoya-Lewis is an American attorney and jurist serving as an associate justice of the Washington Supreme Court. She was nominated by Governor Jay Inslee on December 4,2019,to fill the seat of retiring justice Mary Fairhurst.
Grace Helen Whitener is a Trinidadian-American attorney and jurist serving as an associate justice of the Washington Supreme Court. Whitener was nominated by Governor Jay Inslee on April 13,2020,to fill the seat of retiring justice Charles K. Wiggins.
Kelli Evans is an American lawyer who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of California. She previously served as a judge of the Alameda County Superior Court.
