Mathieu Eugene (born April 26,1953) is a Haitian-American politician. A Democrat,he was a New York City Councilmember for the 40th district,and was the first Haitian-born city councilmember.
His district included portions of Crown Heights,East Flatbush,Flatbush,Kensington,Midwood,Prospect Park and Prospect Lefferts Gardens in Brooklyn.
Eugene is a Haitian-American,born in Cap-Haïtien in April 1954.[ citation needed ]
He is also a physician,having attended medical school in Belgium,the Dominican Republic,and Mexico.[ citation needed ]
His medical degree is from Universidad del Noreste in Mexico but he does not practice in the U.S. [1]
Before he became a City Council member,he was a community organizer;he still runs a youth program in Brooklyn.[ citation needed ]
In 2006,Councilwoman Yvette Clarke resigned following her election to the United States Congress. In the special election to replace her,Eugene won both the non-partisan primary and the general election. Eugene is the first Haitian-born elected official in the state of New York. [2] [3]
Eugene was re-elected in 2009,2013,and 2017.
Eugene is a practicing Catholic.[ citation needed ]
He is a black belt in the martial art of Taekwondo. [4]

Brooklyn is a borough of New York City located at the westernmost end of Long Island in the State of New York. Formerly an independent city,the borough is coextensive with Kings County,one of twelve original counties established under British rule in 1683 in the then Province of New York. As of the 2020 United States census,the population stood at 2,736,074,making it the most populous of the five boroughs of New York City,and the most populous county in the state. Brooklyn,at 37,339.9 inhabitants per square mile (14,417.0/km2),is the second most densely populated county in the U.S. after Manhattan,as of 2022. Had Brooklyn remained an independent city,it would now be the fourth most populous American city after the rest of New York City,Los Angeles,and Chicago.
Crown Heights is a neighborhood in the central portion of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Crown Heights is bounded by Washington Avenue to the west,Atlantic Avenue to the north,Ralph Avenue to the east,and Empire Boulevard/East New York Avenue to the south. It is about one mile (1.6 km) wide and two miles (3.2 km) long. Neighborhoods bordering Crown Heights include Prospect Heights to the west,Flatbush and Prospect Lefferts Gardens to the south,Brownsville to the east,and Bedford–Stuyvesant to the north.
Flatbush is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The neighborhood consists of several subsections in central Brooklyn and is generally bounded by Prospect Park to the north,East Flatbush to the east,Midwood to the south,and Kensington and Parkville to the west. The modern neighborhood includes or borders several institutions of note,including Brooklyn College.
The Newkirk Avenue–Little Haiti station is a station on the IRT Nostrand Avenue Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of Newkirk and Nostrand Avenues in Brooklyn,the station is served by the 2 train at all times and the 5 train on weekdays.
Park Slope is a neighborhood in western Brooklyn,New York City,within the area once known as South Brooklyn. Park Slope is roughly bounded by Prospect Park and Prospect Park West to the east,Fourth Avenue to the west,Flatbush Avenue to the north,and Prospect Expressway to the south. Generally,the neighborhood is divided into three sections from north to south:North Slope,Center Slope,and South Slope. The neighborhood takes its name from its location on the western slope of neighboring Prospect Park. Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue are its primary commercial streets,while its east–west side streets are lined with brownstones and apartment buildings.
East Flatbush is a residential neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. East Flatbush is bounded by Crown Heights and Empire Boulevard to the north;Brownsville and East 98th Street to the east;Flatlands,Canarsie and the Long Island Rail Road's Bay Ridge Branch to the south;and the neighborhood of Flatbush and New York Avenue to the west. East Flatbush is a predominantly African American neighborhood and has a population of 135,619 as of the 2010 United States census.
Prospect Heights is a neighborhood in the northwest of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The traditional boundaries are Flatbush Avenue to the west,Atlantic Avenue to the north,Eastern Parkway –beginning at Grand Army Plaza –to the south,and Washington Avenue to the east. In the northern section of Prospect Heights are the Vanderbilt Rail Yards,built over as part of the Pacific Park project. The Barclays Center,home to the NBA's Brooklyn Nets basketball team,is located in the northwestern corner of the neighborhood in Pacific Park at Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues.
Flatbush Avenue is a major avenue in the New York City Borough of Brooklyn. It runs from the Manhattan Bridge south-southeastward to Jamaica Bay,where it joins the Marine Parkway–Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge,which connects Brooklyn to the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. The north end was extended from Fulton Street to the Manhattan Bridge as "Flatbush Avenue Extension".
Howard Golden was an American lawyer and politician in the Democratic Party who served as the borough president of Brooklyn from January 3,1977,to December 31,2001. He concurrently served as chairman of the Brooklyn Democratic Party from January 1984 to October 1990. Golden also served on the New York City Council from 1970 until 1976.

Khalil Gibran International Academy is a public school in Boerum Hill,Brooklyn,New York City,New York that opened in September 2007 with about 60 sixth grade students. As the first English-Arabic public school in the country to offer a curriculum emphasizing the study of Arabic language and culture,it was placed at the center of controversy by opponents. Khalil Gibran,the school's namesake,was a Lebanese-American poet.
