James F. Gennaro (born May 3,1957) is an American politician serving as a Democratic member of the New York City Council,representing the 24th district since 2021. He previously represented the same seat from 2002 until 2013,and was the chair of the Council's Environmental Protection Committee. He was first elected to the Council in 2001. In November 2005,he was re-elected to the seat,based in central Queens. [1]
In the 2008 New York state elections,Gennaro was the Democratic candidate for the New York State Senate;his opponent was the Republican incumbent,Frank Padavan. [2] After 3 months of recounting ballots,the incumbent,Senator Padavan,was declared the winner and Gennaro conceded defeat. [3]
In November 2009,Gennaro was re-elected for a third term on the City Council. [1] Due to term limits,Gennaro did not run again in 2013;his seat was won by Democrat Rory Lancman. Gennaro left office on December 31,2013.
Formerly the senior policy adviser to then Council Speaker Peter Vallone,Sr.,Gennaro was an adjunct professor of political science and environmental public policy at Queens College. [1] He also served as President of the Jamaica Estates Association and as a member of Queens Community Board 8. [1]
Gennaro lost his first wife Joanne to multiple system atrophy in 2016. [4] He married his second wife,Wendy B. Phaff in 2020,and they live in Jamaica Estates,Queens. [1]
In 2020,he declared his intention to run for his former Council seat. [5] On February 2,2021,Gennaro declared his victory in the nonpartisan special election for this seat,after the city's Board of Election released its in-person voting results for that day. [6] [7] The election was the first in New York City to use ranked choice voting. Gennaro was sworn into office on February 18,2021,16 days after the special election date.

He was also a losing candidate in the 2009 New York City mayoral election,the 2013 Queens Borough President election,and the 2017 New York City mayoral election.
Frank Padavan was an American engineer and politician. He served as a New York state senator representing District 11,located in Queens County. His district included the communities of Queens Village,Flushing,Bayside,Whitestone,Douglaston,Little Neck,College Point,Bellerose,Hollis,Jamaica Estates,Floral Park,and Glen Oaks. A Republican,Padavan lost his 2010 bid for re-election to Democrat Tony Avella.

A member of the Democratic Party,he last represented District 13 in the State Senate,which includes the Queens neighborhoods of Corona,East Elmhurst,Elmhurst,Jackson Heights,and Woodside. He previously represented District 39 in the New York State Assembly,which is located in Queens,New York and includes Corona,Elmhurst and Jackson Heights. He was elected to the New York State Senate in a landslide on March 16,2010. Peralta was a member of the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC),a group of Democratic senators who allied themselves with Senate Republicans. He was re-elected in 2012,2014 and 2016,but was defeated in the 2018 Democratic primary.

After serving a 2 - 6-year prison sentence,the New York Supreme Court Appellate Division,Second Department,reversed Wills' convictions and ordered a new trial. On April 22,2021,Ruben Wills was fully exonerated and the charges were dismissed with prejudice. He is a Democrat.

The 2019 Queens County District Attorney election was held on November 5,2019,to elect the Queens County District Attorney. The incumbent,Richard Brown,had announced in January 2019 that he would not seek an eighth term;Brown then died in office that May at the age of 86.
The 2021 New York City Council election were held on November 2,2021. The primary elections were held on June 22,2021. There were several special elections for seats vacated in 2020 and early 2021;these special elections were the first to use ranked-choice voting in city council elections after it was approved by a ballot question in 2019 and the second to use ranked-choice voting since New York City repealed PR-STV in 1945. Due to redistricting after the 2020 Census,candidates also ran for two-year terms instead of four-year terms for the first time,stemming from the New York City Charter overhaul in 1989. Four-year terms will resume in the 2025 election after another two-year election in 2023.
