Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel (born 23 March 1994), known professionally as Mayorkun, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, pianist and dancer. [1] He released a cover of Davido's "The Money" single and was discovered by the singer on Twitter. [2] Mayorkun was signed to Davido's record label DMW from 2016 to 2021; his debut single "Eleko" was released under the label. [3] Mayorkun released his debut studio album The Mayor of Lagos in November 2018. After his exit from DMW in 2021; he released "Let Me Know" [4] and his second studio album Back in Office in October 2021, under the Sony Music West Africa division. [5]

Early life

Mayorkun was born on 23 March 1994 in Lagos, Nigeria. [6] He is the first child of three.

Music career

Mayorkun decided to leave his bank job to search for another job due to bad pay, when his cover video was spotted by Davido in February 2016. [7] Davido followed him on Twitter and Instagram, after which Davido asked him if he could do more than play the keyboard. He got a call from Davido the same day he wrote his resignation letter [8] and sent Davido some of the songs he already recorded. Davido decided to sign him to Davido Music Worldwide. [9] Mayorkun released his first single under the label called "Eleko" in 2016. The song debuted at number 9 on the Nigeria Playdata charts, on 1 May 2016, and reached number 5, on 28 May 2016. [10] The video of the song gathered a million views in the first 10 days. [11] [12] To his name, Mayorkun has several singles including Yawa, Sade, Che Che, and Mama. In October 2018, he released singles "Posh" and "Fantasy" featuring Olu Maintain [13] in anticipation of his first studio album titled The Mayor of Lagos . [14] The Mayor of Lagos was released on the 16th of November, 2018. [15] On December 1, 2018, it appeared on the Billboard World Albums chart, peaking at number 15. [16]

In 2020, he was among the artistes scheduled for performance at the Convention center of the Eko Hotel and suites, Victoria Island, Lagos for the 2020 vanguard personality awards. Other scheduled artists included Tekno, Timaya and several others. [17]

The Mayor of Lagos concert

Mayorkun embarked on a nationwide tour in 2017 that saw him perform in over 35 schools. [18] He ended the year 2017 with his first headline concert in Lagos called "The Mayor of Lagos". [19] [20] The Mayor of Lagos concert continued in 2018 with a show in the city of Ibadan and the federal capital territory, Abuja. [21] Additionally, a date for a Lagos edition was announced. [22] In 2018, Mayorkun did a tour of the UK alongside label mate Dremo, where he performed in approximately six cities. He also performed alongside label boss Davido at the Wireless Festival.

Exit from DMW, and Back In Office

In 2021, during the release party of his second album Back In Office, Mayorkun disclosed his departure from DMW. In an interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, both Davido and Mayorkun revealed the news to fans at his album launch event. The studio album Back In Office, was released through Sony Music's West Africa division in Nigeria on 29 October 2021. [5]

Love For Free EP

On October 13, Mayorkun released his new single "Low Key", following the release of "For Daddy", and served as a teaser for his EP titled Love For Free. [23]

Ayoola Oladapo Agboola also known as KDDO is a Nigerian record producer, songwriter, and artist. He's best known for producing and writing "Under The Influence" by Chris Brown, charting at number 1 on the Billboard Rhythmic Chart & number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition KDDO wrote and produced Afrobeats longest charting Billboard single "Fall" by Davido, renowned for breaking Afrobeat Music globally. Though his signing to Davido's DMW was being disputed at some point, Peruzzi is a front member of the 30 Billion Gang (30BG), a record label including Blacktycoon, Tunegee, and B-Red. Peruzzi was featured on 2Baba's single 'Amaka'.

<i>The Mayor of Lagos</i> 2018 studio album by Mayorkun

The Mayor of Lagos is the debut studio album by Nigerian singer Mayorkun. It was released on November 16, 2018, through Davido Music Worldwide. The album's production was handled by Speroach Beatz, Cracker Mallo, Fresh VDM, Kiddominant, DJ Coublon, Phantom, Northboi, Killertunes and Lussh. Mayorkun enlisted Davido, Sarkodie, D'banj, Patoranking and other label mates to appear as guest artists on the album. Preceding the album's release were five singles: "Mama", "Che Che", "Bobo", "Fantasy" and "Posh". The album won Best R&B/Pop Album at The Headies 2019.

The Headies Award for Producer of the Year is an award presented at The Headies, a ceremony that was established in 2006 and originally called the Hip Hop World Awards. It was first presented to Don Jazzy in 2006.

Bello Emmanuel Oluwashina is a Nigerian record producer, and musician. Known for producing Davido’s hit single “Fia” which was nominated for song of the year and best pop single at The Headies 2018 award.

Abdulsalam Suliyat Modasola well known as Liya, is a Nigerian singer, and songwriter. She came into the music scene with the release of her first single under Davido Music Worldwide, titled "Melo", shortly after signing a record deal with the label in 2020. The accompanying music video for "Melo", was released on 8 December 2020, starring Davido, and directed by Dammy Twitch for DMW. She was formerly signed to Davido Music Worldwide from 2020 to early 2023. She began releasing songs independently in 2023.

Oniyide Azeez, professionally known as Zinoleesky, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and rapper. His rise to fame began with the launch of his debut album Chrome Eccentric featuring hit tracks like "Ma Pariwo" and "Kilofeshe.".

Oludipe Oluwasanmi David professionally known as Spyro is a Nigerian singer and songwriter, he gained widespread recognition after the release of his single "Billing" which was released in July 2022. He is best known for his song "Who is your Guy?" which was first released in November 2022 and re-released in March 2023 as a remix featuring Tiwa Savage. Spyro also has music collaborations with Mayorkun, Dremo, Sound Sultan, Diamond Platnumz, Davido and many others.

Folarinwale Elemide known professionally as The Flowolf is a Nigerian rapper, singer and songwriter. He rose to prominence in 2020 with the release of the viral song'Mafa Mafa' featuring Davido, Peruzzi and Dremo, which peaked at number 2 on the Nigeria Apple Music chart on the week of April 5, 2020. He’s affiliated to Davido Music Worldwide.

<i>Back in Office</i> 2021 studio album by Mayorkun

Back in Office is the second studio album by Nigerian singer Mayorkun. It was released on 29 October 2021 through Sony Music West Africa. The album features guest appearances from Flavour, DJ Maphorisa, Kabza de Small, Joeboy, Gyakie, and Victony. Production was handled by Fresh VDM, Speroach Beatz, Telz, Clemzy, Quebeat, Semzi, Junior Taurus, Phantom, Tempoe, DJ Maphorisa, and Kabza de Small. It serves as a follow-up to Mayorkun's debut, The Mayor of Lagos (2018).
