The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, run by Food and Wine Victoria Ltd. is an event held in March annually since 1993 to promote Melbourne and Victoria's food and wine culture.
Operating on a not-for-profit basis[ citation needed ], the festival's charter is to promote the produce, talent and lifestyle of Melbourne and Victoria, and to promote Melbourne as the "food and wine capital of Australia". Since its beginnings with a small program of events, the festival has grown to become known for events including cooking classes and large 'banquet-style' lunches.
The festival has a board of management and is supported by a small team who are responsible for the coordination of its events, in close collaboration with Victoria's food and wine industry.
The 20th Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, presented by Bank of Melbourne, celebrated its 50th year[ clarification needed ] over 20 days, 2 – 21 March.
There was around 30 events staged along Melbourne's Yarra River and Docklands. The Festival launch also saw the opening of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival Greenhouse by "Joost", a temporary "eco-restaurant" erected solely for the 20 days of the Festival.

The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival began in 1993 with 12 events. Since its inception it has grown annually, the Festival claims to attract food and wine experts from across the world, including chefs and winemakers, growers, purveyors, authors, food and wine commentators and critics.
Food critic Matt Preston was previously the festival's creative director; the 2009 Melbourne Food and Wine Festival was his last.
Most of the 2020 festival went on hiatus. The rest went virtual.
The 19th Melbourne and Food and Wine Festival was attended by more than 350,000 people with over 250 events[ citation needed ] over 11 days.

Melbourne hosts food and wine festivals every year to attract tourist people into it and to show how diverse Melbourne is with its food.
In 2010, the large-scale cooking class, known as the "Langham Melbourne Masterclass" included chefs David Chang (Momofuku, New York), Massimo Bottura (Osteria Francescana, Modena, Italy) and Claude Bosi (Hibiscus, London), and winemaker Gaia Gaja (Angelo Gaja's daughter).
The festival's main event, the large banquet-style lunch, known as the "World’s Longest Lunch" celebrated Melbourne's Chinese heritage and the return of Heat Beads Hawkers' Market to Queen Victoria Market. Simultaneous to the "World’s Longest Lunch in Melbourne", the community of Marysville hosted one of 19 Regional "World’s Longest Lunches" one year after the Black Saturday bushfires. The event formed part of the festival's program of more than 70 regional events. [2]
The festival also grew and installed an urban food-producing garden – 'Metlink Edible Garden' – in Melbourne's City Square.
In 2009, the Festival hosted The Fat Duck's Heston Blumenthal (3 stars), The French Laundry's Thomas Keller (7 stars) and Noma's Rene Redzepi (2 stars), as well as winemakers such as the Rhone Valley's Michel Chapoutier and Champagne's Sophie and Pierre Larmandier.
Domestic award won include the 2010 RACV Victorian Tourism Awards for"Major Festivals and Events" (Hall of Fame), Melbourne Airport 2008 and 2009 Victorian Tourism Awards [3] in the category of 'Major Festivals and Events' and 2008 Melbourne Awards in the category of 'Community Division – Contribution to Profile'. International awards won include the 2008 International Festival and Events Awards Gold for 'Best Festival Program'.
Food & Wine is an American monthly magazine published by Dotdash Meredith. It was founded in 1978 by Ariane and Michael Batterberry. It features recipes, cooking tips, travel information, restaurant reviews, chefs, wine pairings and seasonal/holiday content and has been credited by The New York Times with introducing the dining public to "Perrier, the purple Peruvian potato and Patagonian toothfish".

Matt Preston is an English-Australian food critic, writer and television presenter. He is best known for his role as a judge on Network Ten's MasterChef Australia between 2009 and 2019, and for his weekly national food column that appears in NewsCorp's metro newspapers, with a combined reach of over 2.9 million Australians each week. Preston is also a senior editor for Delicious. and Taste magazines, and is also the author of four best-selling cookbooks.
Emmanuel Feildel is a French-Australian chef, restaurateur and television presenter trained in England, who is best known as one of the judges of the competitive cooking show My Kitchen Rules.
George Dimitrios Calombaris is an Australian chef and restaurateur. Calombaris was one of the judges of the Network 10 series MasterChef Australia from 2009 to 2019. Prior to his role on MasterChef Australia, Calombaris appeared regularly on the daytime Network Ten cooking show Ready Steady Cook.
Gary Mehigan is an English-Australian chef and restaurateur. Mehigan was one of the original judges of the Network 10 series MasterChef Australia.
The Boston Wine Festival, founded by Chef Daniel Bruce in 1989 is held annually at the Boston Harbor Hotel, is one of the nation's longest-running wine and food pairing series. Spanning three and a half months and including multiple events each week, the Boston Wine Festival celebrated its twentieth anniversary in January 2009. Through the festival’s 20 plus year history more than 75,000 bottles of wine have been opened and Chef Bruce has never repeated a menu, totaling 3,000 different dishes at 750 dinners served.
The Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival is an annual five-day event in Miami Beach, Lincoln Road, typically in mid-February. The event showcases wine, spirits, chefs, and culinary personalities. The five-day event consists of dinners, wine seminars, tasting and demos, brunches and lunches, walk-around tastings, family events, fitness, and late-night parties. The event is hosted by Florida International University.
Sepia is a mid-sized, upscale restaurant run by owner Emmanuel Nony and Executive Chef Andrew Zimmerman located in the West Loop neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Chef Zimmerman's menu is classified as New American cuisine, and focuses on local, seasonal products. Built in Chicago's Warehouse District, Sepia was originally a print shop from the 1890s. The renovation for the restaurant, designed by Gary Lee, included putting in a custom-tile, Art Nouveau floor and hand-crafted millwork in order to enhance the historical qualities of the building. Sepia also uses vintage stemware for their tables matching the vintage interior decor of the restaurant.
The MAD Symposium is an annual symposium held in Copenhagen, Denmark consisting of presentations from chefs, farmers, academics, thinkers, and artists. The event is hosted by MAD Food Organization, which was founded in 2011 by Danish chef René Redzepi, who is also the founder of the Copenhagen-based restaurant, Noma. The two-day symposium takes place inside a circus tent along the waterfront of Refshaleøen. The audience for MAD consists predominantly of chefs, aspiring cooks, farmers, journalists, and other foodservice professionals. The event has been described as "a mashup of TED, Burning Man, and SXSW" and "The Food World's G-20".
Darren Purchese is a British pastry chef, author and television personality. He is the creator of the popular cake and dessert business, Burch & Purchese Sweet Studio, in Melbourne, Australia. Darren is a regular guest chef on Network 10's Masterchef Australia. He is scheduled to judge The Great Australian Bake Off starting in 2023.
The Epcot International Food & Wine Festival is an annual food festival at Epcot, in the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida. It would typically run from late September to mid-November, though in recent years the start date has moved earlier to mid-July. Special kiosks are set up around the World Showcase with food and drinks that reflect various countries. The activities, themes and corporate sponsors have changed over the years since the festival began in 1995.
Devour! The Food Film Fest is a Canadian Film festival dedicated to films about food and wine culture. The five-day festival takes place annually in late fall in the Wolfville, Kings County, Nova Scotia. In 2020 organizers mounted a hybrid in-person and streamed festival due to Covid-19. Attendance was 1800 in person and 1600 virtual guests. Opening night celebrity host was "Phil Rosenthal" from the "Netflix" hit "Somebody Feed Phil".. Festival Dates for 2021 are October 19–24, 2021.
Ben Shewry is a New Zealand chef and owner of Attica restaurant in Melbourne.
Theater of Life is a 2016 Canadian feature-length documentary film written and directed by Peter Svatek about a gourmet soup kitchen created by Italian chef Massimo Bottura and 60 international colleagues such as Mario Batali, Rene Redzepi and Alain Ducasse, using food waste from Expo 2015 in Milan. Situated in an abandoned theatre, the soup kitchen was named the "Refettorio Ambrosiano" by Bottura. The film also addresses the issue of food waste and the 1.3 billion tons of food thrown away annually around the world—one-third of all food produced.
Jeremy Charles is head chef and a co-owner of Raymonds and the Merchant Tavern. He has been featured in various journals. In 2014, the Maclean Power List: Canada's 50 Most Powerful People. In 2015 his annual ‘Dinner for Levi’ event raised $50,000 for Janeway Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In 2016, he received the City of St. John's Legend Award. Charles has participated in chef events with: Cook It Raw, Bottura's Refettorio Ambrosiano, Terroir Symposium, the Northern Chef's Alliance and the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. In 2018 he was named Canada's Best Chef. His restaurant Raymonds was featured in the Diners Club World's 50 Best Restaurants Academy.
Wellington On a Plate is an annual food festival run by the Wellington Culinary Events Trust (WCET) a non-profit charitable trust which was created to support Wellington's hospitality industry during the winter low-season. The first Wellington On a Plate festival was held in August 2009. Visa has been a naming rights sponsor of the festival since 2010, and the festival is known as 'Visa Wellington On a Plate'.
