Memory Booysen (born 1969) is a South African politician who has been the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Health and Wellness in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 2024. A member of the Democratic Alliance,he was elected to the provincial parliament in 2024.
Prior to his election to the Provincial Parliament,Booysen was involved in the politics of the Garden Route district of the Western Cape. He served as the mayor of the Bitou Local Municipality from 2011 until 2016 when he was elected the district mayor,a position he would hold until his election to the provincial legislature in 2024.
Booysen was born to a Xhosa family 1969 in Hankey in what is today known as the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. [1] His father,John Lolwana,had changed his surname to Booysen and convinced the apartheid authorities that he was a Coloured which allowed the family to settle in the predominantly Coloured community of Hankey. [2] Following his father's death in 1980,the authorities evicted the family and they moved to Centerton,a Black community outside of Hankey. [2] After high school,Booysen studied for a higher diploma in education from the University of the Western Cape and then for a certificate in hotel management from the Witwatersrand Technikon. He worked for the Southern Sun group for a total of twelve years. [1]
Booysen moved to Plettenberg Bay in 1989. He joined the African National Congress and rose through the party's ranks to become the chairperson of the ANC's Greater Plettenberg Bay branch and the party's youth league. In 2002,he found employment as a personal assistant to the mayor of Bitou Local Municipality. Booysen was chairperson of the ANC's Plettenberg Bay sub-region by 2004. [2]
Booysen stood as the ANC's candidate for Ward 6 of the Bitou Local Municipality,which encompassed the Kwanokuthula township,in the 2006 local government elections,and was elected. [2] A year later,he was expelled from the ANC and stood as an independent candidate in the subsequent by-election in his ward,which he won. [2]
In 2008,Booysen joined the newly established Congress of the People and was appointed the party's Southern Cape election manager for the 2009 national and provincial elections. [2]
Following the implosion of COPE,Booysen joined the Democratic Alliance. He stood as the party's mayoral candidate for Bitou in the 2011 local government elections. [3] The DA formed a coalition with COPE to govern the municipality which saw Booysen elected as mayor of Bitou. [2]
Following the 2016 municipal elections,he was elected as the mayor of the Eden District Municipality which later became the Garden Route District Municipality. [4] He was re-elected for a second term as district mayor after the 2021 local elections. [5]
In March 2024,it was announced that Booysen had been placed on the DA candidate list for the Western Cape Provincial Parliament for the election on 29 May 2024 amid allegations of misconduct. [6] The DA won 24 seats in the provincial election and Booysen was selected to take up one of them. He resigned as Garden Route district mayor on 8 June and was sworn in as a member of the Provincial Parliament on 13 June 2024. [7] [8] On 4 July 2024,he was elected to chair the Standing Committee on Health and Wellness. [9]

Plettenberg Bay,nicknamed Plett,is the primary town of the Bitou Local Municipality in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. According to the census of 2001,the town had a population of 29,149. It was originally named Bahia Formosa by early Portuguese explorers and lies on South Africa's Garden Route 210 km from Port Elizabeth and about 600 km from Cape Town.

Mark Willemse is a South African politician serving as the Deputy Mayor of the Knysna Local Municipality since 2021. He is the former Executive Mayor of Knysna,and former Ward Councillor for Ward 9. Having taken office in June 2018 after voting with the ANC to unseat Mayor Eleanore Bouw-Spies,he lost the confidence of his caucus and was dismissed in October 2019. His application to court to overturn his dismissal was dismissed,with costs,in March 2020. Willemse was previously Speaker of the Eden District Municipality.
The 2021 South African Municipal Elections were held on 1 November 2021,to elect councils for all district,metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country's nine provinces. Being the 6th municipal election held in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994. These held - since then -every five years. The previous municipal elections were held in 2016. On 21 April 2021,President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the elections to be held on Wednesday,27 October 2021. It had been recommend by Dikgang Moseneke to delay the municipal elections until 2022. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) requested the Constitutional Court to support the date postponement. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supported the date postponement while the Democratic Alliance (DA) was against the postponement of the date. The Constitutional Court dismissed the application to postpone the date until 2022,ruling that they had to take place between 27 October and 1 November. On 9 September 2021,the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs,Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced that the elections would be held on 1 November.
Lulama Lennox Mvimbi is a South African politician,party member of the African National Congress and a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 22 May 2019 until 28 May 2024. He was the Mayor of the Bitou Local Municipality for two nonconsecutive terms,from 1995 to 1998 and again from 2006 to 2011,respectively. He also served as the mayor of the Eden District Municipality from 2003 to 2006. Mvimbi is the first African National Congress politician to hold the post of Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament.
Gillion Bosman is a South African politician serving as both the chairperson of the Standing Committee on Social Development and the Petitions Committee in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since June 2019. He became a member of the provincial parliament in May 2019 following the 2019 general election. He had formerly served as a municipal councillor of the City of Cape Town from August 2016 to May 2019. Bosman is a member of the governing Democratic Alliance.
Wendy Felecia Philander is a South African politician serving as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since August 2018. She is the chairperson of the Standing Committee on Health. She was previously a Member of the Mayoral Committee of the Drakenstein Local Municipality. Philander is a member of the Democratic Alliance.
Mireille Mary Wenger is a South African politician who has served as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Health and Wellness since 2024. A member of the Democratic Alliance (DA),she has been a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since May 2014. She previously served as the DA's Chief Whip from 2019 to 2022 and Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities from 2022 to 2024.

Nolitha Ntobongwana is a South African educator and politician. She currently serves as the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure in the National Assembly. A member of the African National Congress,she has been a Member of Parliament since 2019. Ntobongwana had previously served in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature.
The Bitou Local Municipality council consists of thirteen members elected by mixed-member proportional representation. Seven councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in seven wards,while the remaining six are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received. In the election of 18 May 2011 no party obtained a majority;the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the African National Congress (ANC) won six seats each,with the remaining seat going to the Congress of the People (COPE). The DA and COPE formed a coalition to govern the municipality.
Sakhumzi Stoffels Somyo is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,he was elected to the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature in 2014. He was then appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) responsible for the Finance,Economic Development,Environment and Tourism portfolio. In 2018,he was fired as an MEC. Somyo was elected to Parliament in 2019. Soon after,he was elected Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Auditor General.
Boyce Makhosonke Maneli is a South African politician from Gauteng who has been Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications and a Member of Parliament for the African National Congress since 2019. He had previously served as the Executive Mayor of the West Rand District Municipality from 2016 to 2019 and as the Regional Chairperson of the ANC's West Rand Region from 2014 to 2018.
Leswafo Joshua Matlou is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Limpopo Provincial Legislature since 2019. He was formerly the Mayor of Mopani District Municipality from 2009 until 2014,when the ANC asked him to resign. He also served as the chairperson of the ANC's influential Mopani branch from 2009 to 2013 and before that was the Provincial Chairperson of the ANC Youth League in Limpopo.

Prior to serving in the NCOP,he was a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly. Gericke previously served as the founding president of the Plaaslike Besorgde Inwoners,a minor political party in the Garden Route District Municipality,from 2011 until 2023.
