The Australia national cricket team toured England in 1884. The team is officially termed the Fourth Australians, following three previous tours in the 1878, 1880 and 1882 seasons. After hitting just 13 home runs in 1883, the White Stockings hit 142, the first time that a team had hit 100+ home runs in a season.

The 1884 New York Gothams season was the second season of that baseball franchise, eventually known as the San Francisco Giants. The team finished in fourth place, 22 games behind the pennant-winning Providence Grays.
