Michael Houlie (born 27 June 2000) is a South African swimmer. [2] He competed in the men's 100 metre breaststroke at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships. [3] In 2019, he represented South Africa at the 2019 African Games held in Rabat, Morocco. [4] He also competed in the men's 100 metre breaststroke event at the 2020 Summer Olympics. [5]

Houlie achieved a 2022 World Aquatics Championships and 2022 Commonwealth Games qualifying time in the 50 metre breaststroke with a gold medal-winning time of 27.22 seconds at the 2022 South Africa National Swimming Championships. [6] While his time did achieve the qualifying standard, he was not automatically qualified for the World Championships team as swimmers were required to qualify in Olympic events per the selection criteria. [7] Upon completion of the Championships, Swimming South Africa named him as a qualifier for both the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games in the 50 metre breaststroke. [8] [9]

Day two of swimming at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, conducted in July and August in Birmingham, England, Houlie ranked twelfth in the preliminaries of the 100 metre breaststroke, qualifying for the semifinals with his time of 1:01.62. [10] In the semifinals, he placed twelfth with a time of 1:01.24 and did not qualify for the event final. [11] Two days later, he swam a time of 27.10 seconds in the preliminaries of the 50 metre breaststroke, tying Adam Peaty of England for overall first-rank and qualifying for the semifinals. [12] [13] He ranked third overall in the semifinals, second in his heat behind Sam Williamson of Australia, with a time of 27.39 seconds and qualified for the final. [14] [15] He finished 0.04 seconds behind bronze medalist Ross Murdoch of Scotland in the final, with a time of 27.36 seconds, to place fourth. [16] [17]

At the 2022 U.S. Open Swimming Championships, held in Greensboro, United States, Houlie competed representing the University of Tennessee and helped win a silver medal in the 4×100 metre medley relay on day two, splitting a 50.96 for the freestyle leg of the relay to contribute to the final time of 3:43.44. [18] The following day, he placed fifth in the final of the 100 metre breaststroke with a time of 1:02.08. [19]

Luke Greenbank is an English professional swimmer who specialises in backstroke. A medalist in the 200 metre backstroke at the Olympic Games and the World and European championships, he also swam the first leg in the 2019 World and 2020 European Championship gold medal-winning Great Britain medley relay teams. He won a silver medal as lead-off for Great Britain in the 4 x 100 metre medley relay for men at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He won a gold medal as lead-off for England in the heats of the 4 x 100 metre medley relay for men at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Kaylene Corbett is a South African swimmer. She competed in the women's 100 metre breaststroke event at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, she won the bronze medal in the 200 metre breaststroke.

Erin Gallagher is a South African swimmer. She competed in the women's 100 metre freestyle event at the 2017 World Aquatics Championships. In 2019, she represented South Africa at the 2019 African Games held in Rabat, Morocco.

James Wilby is a British competitive swimmer who specialises in the breaststroke. Wilby is the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion in 200 metre breaststroke, the 2022 Commonwealth Games champion in 100 metre breaststroke, and the 2022 European champion in 200 metre breaststroke. He formed part of the Great Britain team that won World Championship gold in the men's 4 x 100 metre medley relay in 2019, and the England team that won the Commonwealth Games Men's 4 x 100 metre medley relay in 2014 and 2022.

Tatjana Smith is a South African retired swimmer who specialised in breaststroke events. She is a two-time Olympic champion and the most decorated South African Olympian in history. He represented India at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

Pieter Coetze is a South African swimmer. He is the African record holder in the long course and short course 100 metre backstroke and short course 50 metre backstroke. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, he won the gold medal in the 100 metre backstroke, the silver medal in the 50 metre backstroke, and the bronze medal in the 200 metre backstroke. At the 2022 World Junior Championships, he competed in ten events, including winning the gold medal in the 200 metre backstroke, silver medals in the 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre backstroke, and the 4×100 metre medley relay, as well as a bronze medal in the 4×100 metre mixed medley relay.

Aimee Canny is a South African swimmer. She competed in the women's 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Matthew Sates is a South African swimmer. He is the African record holder in the short course 200 metre freestyle, 400 metre freestyle, and 200 metre individual medley as well as the South African record holder in the 400 metre individual medley. He is the 2022 World Short Course champion in the 200 metre individual medley and bronze medalist in the 400 metre individual medley. At the 2022 NCAA Division I Championships, he won the NCAA title in the 500 yard freestyle. For the 2021 FINA Swimming World Cup, he was the overall male winner, earning a total of 18 medals, including 13 gold medals.

The 2022 SA National Swimming Championships was held from 6 to 11 April 2022 in Gqeberha, South Africa at the Newton Park Swimming Pool. Events were competed in a long course swimming pool. It served as a selection meet for determining the swimmers to represent South Africa at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships and 2022 Commonwealth Games. It was held concurrently with the 2022 SA National Junior Swimming Championships as part of the multi-sport 2022 Telkom SA National Aquatic Championships. The meet was open to international competition and included multi-class para swimming events.

Lara van Niekerk is a South African competitive swimmer. She is the current African, Commonwealth, and South African record holder in the long course 50-metre breaststroke and the African and South African record holder in the short course 50-metre breaststroke. She won gold medals in the 50-metre breaststroke at the 2018 African Swimming Championships and the 2022 Commonwealth Games as well as a silver medal at the 2022 World Short Course Championships and the bronze medal at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in the same event. In the 100-metre breaststroke, she won gold medals at the 2018 African Swimming Championships and the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
