Michael Parke-Taylor (born August 5, 1953) is an independent art historian and curator who worked at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto in various positions for twenty-three years, retiring as Curator of Modern Art in 2011. He has published widely and is a collector of popular culture. In 2024, he curated the retrospective exhibition and wrote the accompanying book for the exhibition Bertram Brooker: When We Awake! at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg. Career

Parke-Taylor was born in Toronto. [2] He completed his Honours Bachelor’s degree in art history at the University of Toronto (1976) and Master’s Degree in art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London (1979). [2] From 1980 to 1985, Parke-Taylor was Curator of Exhibitions at the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina. In this position, he curated Prints by Rodolphe Bresdin which travelled to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, André Derain in North American Collections (which travelled to the University Art Museum, University of California at Berkeley and was praised for its beautiful selection on a shoestring budget by Newsweek magazine), and Jacques Lipchitz: Mother and Child. He also curated numerous exhibitions on prairie artists such as Bob Boyer, Edward Poitras, Bob Christie, Douglas Haynes, Ann Clarke, Gary Olson, and Brian Fisher. [2]

From 1986 to 1987, he was Curator of the Toronto Board of Education Archives, then from 1987 to 2011, Parke-Taylor held various curatorial positions at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), retiring in 2011 as Curator of Modern Art. He was responsible for European modernist painting, sculpture, and works on paper from 1900 to 1960, including the AGO's extensive holdings of Henry Moore. He organized the exhibitions Picasso at Large in Toronto Collections, The Symbolist Prints of Edvard Munch: The Vivian and David Campbell Collection (with Elizabeth Prelinger), Humanity Refigured: Henry Moore and Postwar British Sculpture, André Masson inside/outside Surrealism: Prints and Illustrated Books from the Gotlieb Collection, and Voyage into Myth: French Painting from Gauguin to Matisse from the Hermitage Museum, Russia (with Nathalie Bondil). Following his retirement from the Art Gallery of Ontario in 2011, Parke-Taylor published extensively on Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald, writing both books and articles about him. In 2019, he co-curated with Sarah Milroy and Ian Dejardin, Into the Light: Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald (McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg) and in 2024, he curated the retrospective exhibition and wrote the catalogue for Bertram Brooker: When We Awake! at the McMichael. [1]

Parke-Taylor has published on aspects of the 1960s San Francisco psychedelic rock posters and in 2008 donated an extensive collection of street gig posters from Toronto to Library and Archives Canada (R12541-0-7-E). [4] In 2011, Parke-Taylor curated the exhibition PIN UP at Mercer Union in Toronto which featured posters by contemporary Canadian artists and an installation of Toronto gig posters from Parke-Taylor’s private collection. [5] He has written articles for the Journal of Popular Culture about psychedelic posters [6] [7] and catalogue entries on the new Western frontier in art and film. [8] Parke-Taylor's extensive MAD magazine and related archive was donated to York University Archives in Toronto in 2024. [2] He describes himself as something of an addict where collecting is concerned. [9]

Writing

Parke-Taylor organized, co-organized or contributed essays to exhibitions on a wide range of art and artists, contributing to the art writing on such artists as Edmund Morris (1984), Robert Longo (1986), Edvard Munch (1997), and Modigliani (2004), and has curated exhibitions on a broad range of subjects in the field of prints and drawings. [2] He is author of the e-book: "Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald: Life and Work" (Art Canada Institute, 2019) which was selected by the Art Canada Institute to appear as a hardcover printed book. [2] With Nathalie Bondil, Kenneth Silver, and Albert Kostenevich, he co-curated the monumental exhibition Voyage into Myth: French Painting from Gauguin to Matisse from the Hermitage Museum, Russia (2009). His books "In Seclusion with Nature: The Later Work of L. LeMoine FitzGerald 1942–1956", "Some Magnetic Force: Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald Writings" (2023) and "Bertram Brooker: When We Awake" (2024) are important contributions to Canadian art history. [10] "Some Magnetic Force" is said to provide "remarkable insights into the influences, interests, and innovations" of the Group of Seven's prairie artist. [11]

A self-taught polymath, in addition to being a visual artist, Brooker was a Governor General's Award-winning novelist, as well as a poet, screenwriter, playwright, essayist, copywriter, graphic designer, and advertising executive. A key part of the art community in Toronto, he is considered one of its "most gifted first responders".

Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald L.L. D. also known as L. L. FitzGerald was a Canadian artist and art educator. He was the only member of the Group of Seven based in western Canada. He worked almost exclusively in Manitoba. Although he accepted the Group of Seven’s invitation to become a member in 1932, FitzGerald was less concerned than the rest of the group with the promotion of a unified Canadian identity. Instead he explored his surroundings, delving deeply into the forces he felt animated and united nature in order to make “the picture a living thing.”

She has been part of the team or led teams that created numerous exhibitions, on subjects such as Betty Goodwin, Michael Snow, and Kathleen Munn among others and collaborated with art organizations such as the Tate Modern, and the Jewish Museum, New York.

Edmund Montague Morris (1871-1913), was a Canadian painter and pastelist who recorded the First Nations in paint and photographs and collected their artifacts. He was the son of Alexander Morris, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. He both co-founded the Canadian Art Club and authored an early book on Canadian art, Art in Canada: the early painters (1911?).

Catharine Margaret Mastin is a Canadian curator. She is a specialist in modern and contemporary art with an emphasis on gender and women's art practices. She has worked at the Art Gallery of Windsor in Ontario and the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta. At the Art Gallery of Windsor, she was curator, arts administrator and executive director (2010-2020). She is an Adjunct Member of the Faculty of Graduate Studies in Art History at York University. Mastin also curated the exhibition "Franklin Carmichael: Portrait of a Spiritualist", an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa which toured Canada between 1999 and 2001.

Katerina Atanassova has been the Senior Curator of Canadian Art at the National Gallery of Canada since 2014. She is an art historian and museum administrator of diverse interests, from medieval to contemporary Canadian art. At the National Gallery of Canada, she is responsible for developing the national collections of Canadian painting, sculpture, prints and drawings, and decorative arts, dating up to 1980, and she has re-installed the permanent collection of Canadian art as well as curating exhibitions.

Sarah Milroy is the executive director and chief curator of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario, responsible for the 2021 exhibition and editor of the book Uninvited: Canadian women artists in the modern moment (2021), as well as co-editing with Ian Dejardin, the previous director, Tom Thomson: North Star (2023) and contributing to numerous books on art, including Mary Pratt, From the Forest to the Sea: Emily Carr in British Columbia, David Milne: Modern Painting and co-editing Early Days: Indigenous Art at the McMichael. She is a champion of the art of Canada.

Jean Blodgett was an American-born curator and prolific writer devoted to Inuit art who spent her career in Canada. She was known as a force in her field, the curator who began the serious art historical study of Inuit art in the early 1970s, at a time when few worked on the subject. Her books were popular. Kenojuak went through six editions.

Gary Dufour is an art historian based in Australia who has taught at the University of Western Australia. He served as the senior curator at the Vancouver Art Gallery (1988–1995) and as chief curator and deputy director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia (1995–2013). He is an expert on contemporary and modern art and, in 2016, was appointed as an approved valuer for the Australian Government's Cultural Gifts Program.
