Michelle Manes

Michelle Ann Manes is an American mathematician whose research interests span the fields of number theory, algebraic geometry, and dynamical systems. She is a professor of mathematics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, [1] and has been a program director for algebra and number theory at the National Science Foundation. [2] [3]

Education and career

Manes graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1991, and earned a master's degree in deaf education at Boston University in 1993, with a concentration in mathematics education. She worked in various capacities in the Boston area as a mathematics educator from 1993 to 2003, when she returned to graduate studies. [1] She completed a second master's degree in mathematics in 2004 and a Ph.D. in 2007 at Brown University; her dissertation, Arithmetic dynamics of rational maps, was supervised by Joseph H. Silverman. [1] [4] After a short-term position at the University of Southern California, she joined the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa faculty in 2008. [1] She joined the American Institute of Mathematics as Deputy Director in 2022.

Continuing her interest in mathematics education, Manes co-founded the Math Teachers’ Circle of Hawai‘i (MaTCH) in 2010. [5] [6] [7]

Manes was one of four female editors and chiefs on La Mathematica [8] . [9]

Recognition

In 2015, Manes won the Golden Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics of the Mathematical Association of America, [10] and in 2017 she won the Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching of the University of Hawaii. [11] [12]

Also in 2017, the Association for Women in Mathematics gave her their Service Award. [13] Manes was named an AWM Fellow in the 2020 class of fellows by the Association for Women in Mathematics, for "supporting research careers for women in mathematics through leadership in the WIN Network and AWM Advance Committees to enable the formation of research networks for women in many areas of mathematics". [14] She was elected as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in the 2024 class of fellows. [15]

Trachette Levon Jackson is an American mathematician who is a professor of mathematics at the University of Michigan and is known for work in mathematical oncology. She uses many different approaches, including continuous and discrete mathematical models, numerical simulations, and experiments to study tumor growth and treatment. Specifically, her lab is interested in "molecular pathways associated with intratumoral angiogenesis," "cell-tissue interactions associated with tumor-induced angiogenesis," and "tumor heterogeneity and cancer stem cells."

Suzanne L. Weekes is the Executive Director of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. She is also Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). She is a co-founder of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Undergraduate Program.

Minerva Cordero Braña is a Puerto Rican mathematician and a professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Arlington. She is also the university's Senior Associate Dean for the College of Science, where she is responsible for the advancement of the research mission of the college. President Biden awarded her the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) on February 8, 2022.

Erica Nicole Walker is an American mathematician and the Clifford Brewster Upton Professor of Mathematics Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she also serves as the Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology and as the Director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education. Walker’s research focuses on the "social and cultural factors as well as educational policies and practices that facilitate mathematics engagement, learning and performance, especially for underserved students".
