Midlands 103 (previously known as Midlands Radio 3) is an Irish local independent radio station broadcasting to counties Laois, Offaly, and Westmeath.

Contents

The station's offices and main broadcast studios are in Tullamore, County Offaly. It also has studios in Athlone Towncentre Shopping Centre, Athlone and the Bridge Shopping Centre, Tullamore, and a studio and office in Harbour Place Shopping Centre, Mullingar, with programmes being broadcast regularly from all of these.[ citation needed ] Midlands 103 also has two outside broadcast units.

As of the end of 2021, Midlands 103 had a weekly reach of 122,000 listeners with 73,000 tuning in daily, according to Joint National Listenership Research survey figures. [1]

History

The station was established as "Radio 3" in 1990 having operated as an unlicenced broadcaster "Radio West" between 1982 and 1988.[ citation needed ]

Station output

The prime-time weekday schedule includes breakfast programming, a daily current affairs magazine show, music-driven programmes in the afternoon and "drive time" programming until 7pm.[ citation needed ]

The weekend schedule is a mixture of music programmes and sports coverage, which sometimes includes full commentary of local and inter-county Gaelic games.[ citation needed ] Ireland's longest running love songs show, "Twilight Time", is broadcast on Sunday nights.[ citation needed ]

News

The newsroom is staffed by two full-time newsreaders and a sports correspondent. Midlands 103 also uses its own reporters and freelancers to cover events across the broadcast area.[ citation needed ] A sports reporter and commentators provide sports updates.[ citation needed ] The station produces its own local news bulletins for the region during peak times, with evening and weekend network bulletins produced by Bauer Media Audio Ireland.[ citation needed ]

Sales and promotion

Midlands 103 has 4 full time sales people covering the station's FM broadcast area, a classified sales person and business development officer.[ citation needed ] The station is also a part of the group of independent stations affiliated with the IRS+ national media sales and marketing bureau, which provides national and international branded advertising. Midlands 103 runs two annual awards ceremonies: the "Hospitality Awards" [3] (which gives awards to pubs/bars, hotels, restaurants and the tourism sector), and the "Customer Service Awards" (which focus on customer service in retail and other business in the area).[ citation needed ]

Midlands Gold Westmeath was an Independent Local Radio service in Ireland, broadcasting to County Westmeath. It was an opt-out from Midlands 103, the ILR contractor for counties Westmeath. Laois, and Offaly, and broadcast from studios in Athlone (95.4FM) and Mullingar (96.5FM). It was operated as part of Midlands 103's sound broadcasting contract from the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland.

WLR FM, or more commonly WLR is the local radio station covering Waterford City and County, Ireland. It is Ireland's Local Station of the Year 2019, 2020, 2021 & 2022. The Tullamore transmitter was an AM radio transmission mast located near Tullamore, Ireland. Built in 1975 to replace the Athlone transmitter, it always carried RTÉ Radio 1 on 567 kHz, at 500 kW. The old Athlone mast was used to carry RTÉ 2fm, and was later decommissioned. The Tullamore transmitter was demolished in 2023.

i102-104FM was a regional station in Ireland, launched on 7 February 2008. The station had won a licence – as part of a strategy by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland to create a network of regional youth stations across the Republic – to operate a 'youth' oriented station that would broadcast across seven counties in the northwest and west of Ireland, targeting listeners aged between 15 and 34.

SPIN South West is radio station broadcasting from Raheen in Limerick city to the South West of Ireland. It launched on 23 July 2007, and holds an Independent Regional Radio contract from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland to broadcast to County Kerry, County Limerick, County Clare, County Tipperary and south-west County Laois.

Kevin Martin is an Irish hurling manager and former player. His league and championship career with the Offaly senior team lasted ten seasons from 1993 until 2003.

i105-107FM was a regional radio station in Ireland that broadcast to the north east and midlands of the country. The station was one of four regional youth orientated stations that were licensed by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland to challenge the current monopoly in the 15 to 34 age bracket by national stations RTÉ 2fm and Today FM.
