The football rivalry between Mindelense and Batuque is a rivalry in the island of São Vicente and one of the largest in Cape Verde. The rivalry began in the 1996 when Batuque started to participate in the championship competitions and is one of the youngest in Cape Verde. It is also known as O Clássico and O Clássico de São Vicente which forms part of the Mindelo derby. [1]

It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field called a pitch with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by moving the ball beyond the goal line into the opposing goal.

CS Mindelense

Clube Sportivo Mindelense (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: KS Mindelensi, São Vicente Crioulo: KS Mindelense is a football club that plays in the Premier division of the Interisland League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo in the island of São Vicente. Mindelense is the oldest club in Cape Verde. It is the team won the most cups before and after independence especially in the 1950s and the 1970s with nine titles before independence and eleven after independence. Their first participation in the national division before independence was unofficially in 1938 and officially in 1954, Mindelense first appeared after independence in 1980. Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Batuque and Derby. Its current chairman is Daniel de Jesus. The club's nickname is Leões Encarnados or the Incarnated Lions. A nickname that is used less often is the Red Devils or the Diablos Vermelhos.

Batuque FC

Batuque Futebol Clube is a football club that plays in the São Vicente Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. Its current president is Jota who became first president in around the mid 2000s. Its nickname is Panteras (Panthers) which is also Portugal's Boavista F.C. nickname, the club is not an affiliate to that club. Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Derby and Mindelense.

History

The first challenge between the two clubs was in 1997. It became a main rivalry of the two clubs in around the 2000s. In recent years, the recent 6 matches in 2016 were won only by Mindelense.

In the past 20 years, there have been 38 challenges between them in the championships, soon there will be the 39th challenge coming soon.

The rivalry was featured in the second edition of the São Vicente Super Cup in 2006, the only time it appeared in any of those, there Mindelense won their first Super Cup title after defeating that club 1-0. Nenê was the only scorer.

The São Vicente Super Cup is a regional SuperCup competition played during the season in São Vicente Island, Cape Verde. The super cup competition is organized by the São Vicente Regional Football Association. Its current champions is FC Derby who won their second title The regional champion competes with the cup champion. The 2015 edition was held, as Mindelense won both the regional and cup titles, the regional winner competed with a runner up in the regional cup.

Cultural rivalry

The rivalry are similar to one of the rivalries in other parts of Cape Verde, Mindelense is Mindelo's chief club, Batuque FC is named after the Capeverdean music genre and folk music.

Football rivalry

The rivalry is one of the youngest in Cape Verde.

Mindelense the most successful football (sooccer) club in Cape Verde, having won about 82 official titles (12 national and 70 regional) compared to Batuque's 12 official regional titles. On the other hand, Mindelense had goal scoring in African competitions (no Capeverdean team has ever won an African title) where they scored two goals, Mindelense first appeared in the 1993 African Cup of Champion's Clubs. Batuque never appeared in any of the continental competition.
