Mirima is a small Aboriginal community, located on the edge of the town of Kununurra in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
In 1971, the Mirima Council was established under Catholic priest Peter Willis. The community included mainly Miriwung and Gajerong people. [1] The ancestral lands of the Miriwung people are located near the southern part of the Ord River and therefore Miriwung people occupy the southern section of the Mirima community. The Gajerong people occupy the northern part of Mirima community.
The community is covered by the determined Miriuwung–Gajerrong (Western Australia) native title claim (WC94/2). [1]
The community is managed through its incorporated body, Mirima Council Aboriginal Corporation, incorporated under the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976 on 25 November 1986. [2]
Mirima Layout Plan No.1 has been prepared in accordance with State Planning Policy 3.2 Aboriginal Settlements. The Layout Plan was endorsed by the Western Australian Planning Commission on 15 April 2003. [3]
Mirima National Park also commonly known as Hidden Valley National Park is a National Park in far northern Western Australia located at the eastern side of the Kimberley region. It is located approximately 2,220 kilometres (1,379 mi) from Perth just outside the township of Kununurra.
Miriwoong, also written Miriuwung and Miriwung, is an Aboriginal Australian language which today has fewer than 20 fluent speakers, most of whom live in or near Kununurra in Western Australia. All of the fluent speakers are elderly and the Miriwoong language is considered to be critically endangered. However, younger generations tend to be familiar with a lot of Miriwoong vocabulary which they use when speaking Kimberley Kriol or Aboriginal English.
Kimberley Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, known as Kimberley Land Council, (KLC) is an association of Aboriginal people in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The land council was formed at a meeting at Noonkanbah Station in May 1978. The corporation is registered with the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations as ICN 21.
Cosmo Newbery is a small Aboriginal community in Western Australia, 1,036 kilometres (644 mi) east of Perth between Laverton and Warburton in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. In the 2011 census, Cosmo Newbery had a total population of 74, including 64 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
