Miss Cultural Harvest Festival is a Malaysian ethnic beauty pageant held annually during the Sarawak Harvest and Folklore Festival since 1999. [1]

Background

Miss Cultural Harvest Festival is held in conjunction with the Sarawak Harvest and Folklore Festival, one of the highlights of the Gawai Dayak celebration. The Sarawak Harvest and Folklore Festival is the largest in Sarawak in terms of the community involved. [2]

The beauty pageant aims to seek a winner who has the grace and poise, articulate with a sound knowledge of Sarawak and its tourism-related subjects. The beauty pageant is open to all single ladies of any background, unlike the traditional Kumang Gawai pageant where the contestants are of the Dayak community. [3] [4]

Due to change of the festival name and collaboration with Fair and Lovely brand, the contest was previously known as "Miss Fair and Lovely Gawai Tourism Night (GTN)" between 1999 and 2004, "Miss Fair and Lovely" for the 2005 and 2006 editions, "Miss Fair and Lovely World Harvest Festival" between 2007 and 2010, and "Miss World Harvest Festival" for the 2011 and 2012 editions. The name Bidayuh means 'inhabitants of land'. Originally from the western part of Borneo, the collective name Land Dayak was first used during the period of Rajah James Brooke, the White Rajah of Sarawak. At times, they were also lesser referred to as Klemantan people. They constitute one of the main indigenous groups in Sarawak and West Kalimantan and live in towns and villages around Kuching and Serian in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, while in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan they are mainly concentrated in the northern Sanggau Regency. In Sarawak, most of Bidayuh population can be found within 40 km of the geographical area known as Greater Kuching, within the Kuching and Serian Division. They are the second-largest Dayak ethnic group in Sarawak after the Iban and one of the major Dayak tribes in West Kalimantan.

Gawai Dayak is an annual festival and a public holiday celebrated by the Dayak people in Sarawak, Malaysia on 1 and 2 June. Sarawak Day is now celebrated on July 22 every year. Gawai Dayak was conceived of by the radio producers Tan Kingsley and Owen Liang and then taken up by the Dayak community. The British colonial government refused to recognise Dayak Day until 1962. They called it Sarawak Day for the inclusion of all Sarawakians as a national day, regardless of ethnic origin. It is both a religious and a social occasion recognised since 1957.

Borneo Cultural Festival, abbreviated as BCF, is an annual festival of food, music, and dance that places a focus on cultural diversity of Borneo. The festival is held in Sibu, one of the major towns in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia, and was first organised in 2002. The festival regularly takes place in July, and is organised by the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).

Ayam pansuh or manuk pansuh is a dish prepared by cooking chicken meat in a bamboo stalk, filled with water, seasonings and covered with tapioca leaves from the cassava plant. The origin of ayam pansuh is unknown, but the Ibans and the Bidayuhs from western Borneo always prepare this dish during festivals, especially during the Gawai Dayak. Ayam pansuh is typical among the people in Sarawak, Malaysia and also in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. There is a plan to introduce the dish into the international market.

Miss Universe Malaysia 2018, the 52nd edition of the Miss Universe Malaysia, was held on 11 January 2018 at the Majestic Araneta Auditorium, Kuala Lumpur. Jane Teoh of Penang was crowned by the outgoing titleholder, Samantha James of Kuala Lumpur at the end of the event. She then represented Malaysia at the Miss Universe 2018 pageant in Bangkok, Thailand.

Ratu Teluwaih Jinih is a local beauty pageant based in Mukah, Sarawak. Began in 2008, it is the centerpiece of the Mukah Kaul Festival, which usually lasts a week.

Larissa Ping Liew is a Malaysian model, fashion blogger and beauty pageant titleholder, who was crowned Miss World Malaysia 2018. She represented Malaysia at Miss World 2018 pageant, where she placed in the Top 30.

Francisca Luhong James is a Malaysian model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2020. She represents her country at Miss Universe 2020, where she ended up did not make it into the top 21 semi-finalist, thus her journey was marked in the “50 years of unplacement” for Malaysia in Miss Universe history since Josephine Lena Wong in 1970.

Miss Grand Malaysia is an annual female beauty pageant in Malaysia, founded by a Penang-based businessperson Anson Chong in 2013, aiming to select the country representative for Miss Grand International, which is an annual international beauty pageant promoting World Peace and against all kinds of conflicts. During 2015 to 2021, the contest was run by Introducing Talent Sdn Bhd, under the leadership of Jude Benjamin Lisa. Since 2022, the franchise has belonged to the Singapore-based start-up HyperLive Entertainment.
