Mississippi Highway 500 (MS 500) is a short state highway in central Mississippi. The route starts at MS 13 in the town of Lena, and it travels eastward across southern Leake County. The road turns northeastward after halfway to its eastern terminus, and it ends at MS 487 near Tuscola. MS 500 was designated in 1960 as a gravel road, and it was completely paved with asphalt eight years later.

Route description

The route starts at a three-way junction with MS 13 in Lena, just south of MS 13's intersection with MS 487. Known as Lena and Walnut Grove Road, it travels eastward through the town. The route leaves the corporate limit of Lena past Lyle Street and enters a forested area at Ealy Road. [2] [3] After intersecting Storm Road, the route crosses Sweetwater Creek and begins to turn northeastward near Drystone Road. MS 500 turns north northeast of Union Ridge Road. It shifts westward slightly near Lindsey Road, and it crosses a stream that leads to a drainage ditch. [4] The route emerges out of the forest and ends at MS 487 in Tuscola. [3] The road continues northward as MS 487, [4] and it travels north to MS 35 and onward to Sebastopol. [3]

In 2016, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) calculated as many as 670 vehicles traveling on MS 500 east of Mills Street, and as few as 580 vehicles traveling north of Dry Stone Road. [5] The route is legally defined in Mississippi Code § 65-3-3, [6] and is maintained by the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) as part of the state highway system. [1]

History

The designation was proposed around January 1960, [7] helping connect Lena to MS 35. [8] By September, MS 500 was opened as a gravel road. [9] [10] Paving of MS 500 was near completion in 1961, [8] and a portion near the eastern terminus was paved by 1962. [10] [11] The segment near Lena was paved by 1967, [12] [13] and the remainder was completed one year later. [13] [14]

MS 365 continues northeastward and ends at MS 25 west of Pickwick Lake. The route was designated by 1950, connecting from MS 30 to MS 364. Mississippi Highway 2 is a designation for two highways in northern Mississippi. The westernmost segment starts at MS 5 in Hickory Flat, and ends at MS 15 and MS 368 in Blue Mountain. The eastern segment starts at MS 4 near Ripley and it travels northeastwards towards Corinth. The route becomes concurrent with U.S. Route 72 and US 45 in Corinth, and ends at the Tennessee state line. The road continues as Tennessee State Route 22. The route was designated around 1932, from the state line near Mount Pleasant to the state line near Corinth. The section west of Corinth became a part of US 72 by 1935, and the route was extended southwestwards to Hickory Flat by 1958.

Mississippi Highway 469 is a state highway in central Mississippi, located in Simpson and Rankin counties. The route starts at MS 28 near Georgetown, and it travels north through western Simpson County. The road enters the community of Harrisville and enters Rankin County soon after. It intersects U.S. Route 49 in Florence, and it ends at MS 468 near Whitfield. The route was designated in 1953, and it was extended southwards to MS 20 in 1956. By 1960, all of the route was paved with asphalt.

Mississippi Highway 23 is a state highway in Mississippi. The route starts at MS 25 in the town of Smithville. It travels northeastward through the forests of eastern Itawamba County. The highway intersects Interstate 22 (I-22) and U.S. Route 78 in Tremont. MS 23 ends at the Mississippi–Alabama state line, just west of Red Bay.

Mississippi Highway 306 is a state highway in northern Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 51 in Coldwater, and it travels eastward to an interchange at Interstate 55 (I-55) on the northern edge of the town. Mississippi Highway 465 is a highway in the southern region of the Mississippi Delta. The highway starts at U.S. Route 61 near Redwood. It travels westward towards the Mississippi River, and then northwards to the village of Eagle Bend. The highway then traverses on the Mississippi River levee on a one-lane road. Later, MS 465 leaves the levee, continues northward, and soon ends at MS 1.

Mississippi Highway 332 is a highway in central Mississippi. Its western terminus is at U.S. Route 51 in Grenada. The route travels northeastward through farmland to Grenada Municipal Airport. The road continues to its eastern terminus at Toe Road, southwest of the Grenada Lake. The designation was created in 1958 for a former segment of MS 7, which was rerouted north of the lake.

Mississippi Highway 37 is a state highway in central Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 84 near Collins. The road travels northward through the town of Taylorsville, crossing from Covington County to Smith County. MS 37 turns northwestward and ends at MS 35 in Raleigh. Mississippi Highway 368 is a state highway in northern Mississippi. The route starts at MS 2 and MS 15 in Blue Mountain and travels eastward from the town. The road intersects a few city streets inside the town and county roads outside it. MS 368 ends at its intersection with County Road 700. The route was designated around 1956, connecting MS 2 and MS 15 in Blue Mountain to MS 370 near Dumas. A western extension to MS 5 existed for ten years from 1957 to 1967, and the section east of CO 700 gradually returned to Tippah County for maintenance.

Mississippi Highway 434 is a short state highway in western Mississippi. The route travels from U.S. Route 61 near Nitta Yuma and travels eastward. After crossing a creek, the road travels northeastward and enters Delta City, and the route ends inside the unincorporated community. The route was constructed around 1951, connecting from US 61 to Delta City. An extension along a county road to US 49W existed from 1957 to 1967.

Mississippi Highway 436 is a state highway in western Mississippi. The route starts at Eastside Lake Washington Road in Glen Allan and travels eastward. The road intersects MS 1 in Hampton and turns northeastward. It ends near Percy at U.S. Route 61. MS 436 was designated in 1957, along a road from US 61 to a point near the Washington–Sharkey county line. The route was extended westward to Glen Allan along a state-maintained road in 1958, and also eastward to Belzoni via a county road in 1967. The route east of US 61 was decommissioned by 1967.

Mississippi Highway 462 is a state highway in western Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 61 near Port Gibson, and it travels eastward. The road then turns northeastward, and the route ends at Willows Road and Old Port Gibson Road near Willows. MS 462 was designated around 1958, as a gravel road extending eastward from US 61 near Port Gibson. The road was extended to MS 461 from 1960 to 1963, then to the Natchez Trace Parkway from 1967 to 1998.

Mississippi Highway 556 is a state highway in southwestern Mississippi. The route starts at MS 184 in the town of Meadville and travels southeastwards. MS 556 crosses over the concurrency of U.S. Route 84 and US 98 inside the Homochitto National Forest, and the route ends at US 98 south of Bude. The route was designated around 1953, after a gravel road from US 84 to US 98, which had existed since 1928, was paved.

Mississippi Highway 403 is a state highway in central Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 82 and MS 15 in Mathiston, and it travels north away from the town. It then turns east near Natchez Trace Parkway and then travels below it. MS 403 ends at the intersection of Clarkson Road and Old US 82 near a county highway maintenance barn. The route was designated by 1960, after a paved road extending from Mathiston was constructed around 1958. An extension northwards to MS 50 and MS 341 existed from 1960 to 1967.

Mississippi Highway 487 (MS 487) is a state highway mostly within Leake County, Mississippi that travels in a arc-shape for about 26 miles (42 km). The highway is signed north-south though the overall direction runs from west to east from Lena to Sebastopol, Scott County; its purported northern terminus is lower in latitude than its southern terminus.
