The 2019 Mississippi gubernatorial election will take place on November 5, 2019 to choose the next Governor of Mississippi. Primary elections will occur on August 6, 2019. [1] Incumbent Republican Governor Phil Bryant is ineligible to run for a third term due to term limits.

Philip A. Gunn is an American politician from the U.S. state of Mississippi. A member of the Republican Party, Gunn is the Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives, and represents the 56th district. He has served in the Mississippi House since 2004, and became Speaker in 2012. Gunn is the first Republican to serve as Speaker of the Mississippi House since 1876.

Mississippi House of Representatives lower house of U.S. state legislature

The Mississippi House of Representatives is the lower house of the Mississippi Legislature, the lawmaking body of the US state of Mississippi. According to the state constitution of 1890, it is to comprise no more than 122 members elected for four-year terms. To qualify as a member of the house candidates must be at least 21 years old, a resident of Mississippi for at least four years, and a resident in the district in which he or she is running for at least two years. Current state law provides for the maximum number of members. Elections are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

Chester Trent Lott Sr. is an American politician and author. A former United States Senator from Mississippi, Lott served in numerous leadership positions in both the United States House of Representatives and the Senate. He entered Congress as one of the first of a wave of Republicans winning seats in Southern states that had been solidly Democratic. He became Senate Majority Leader, then stepped down from power after praising Strom Thurmond's 1948 segregationist Dixiecrat presidential bid.

Lynn Fitch American politician

Lynn Fitch is an American attorney and politician who is the 34th State Treasurer of Mississippi, serving since 2012. She is the first Republican woman to hold that position. On March 14, 2018, Fitch announced that she would be a candidate for Attorney General of Mississippi in 2019.

State Treasurer of Mississippi is a post created in 1817 when the state was admitted to the Union. Before the state was formed by splitting the Alabama Territory from the Mississippi Territory, an equivalent post was the Territorial Treasurer General, established in 1802.

2008 United States Senate special election in Mississippi

The 2008 United States Senate special election in Mississippi was held on November 4, 2008. This election was held on the same day of Thad Cochran's re-election bid in the United States Senate election in Mississippi, 2008. The winner of this special election served the rest of the Senate term, which ended in January 2013. Unlike most senate elections, this was a non-partisan election in which the candidate who got a majority of the vote wins, and if the first place candidate did not get 50%, a runoff election with the top two candidates would have been held. In the election, no run off was necessary as Republican nominee and incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Roger Wicker won election to finish the term.

In January 2012, Tollison was appointed Chairman of the Senate Education Committee by Lt. Governor Tate Reeves. 2015 Mississippi gubernatorial election

The 2015 Mississippi gubernatorial election took place on November 3, 2015, to elect the Governor of Mississippi. Incumbent Republican Governor Phil Bryant ran for re-election to a second and final term in office. This is the highest percentage that a Republican has ever won in a statewide election in Mississippi.

Same-sex marriage is legal in the U.S. state of Mississippi. On November 25, 2014, U.S. District Court Judge Carlton W. Reeves of the District Court for Southern Mississippi, ruled Mississippi's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. Enforcement of his ruling was stayed pending appeal to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Obergefell v. Hodges that the denial of marriage rights to same-sex couples is unconstitutional. On June 29, the State Attorney General ordered clerks to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. On July 1, the Fifth Circuit lifted its stay and Judge Reeves ordered an end to Mississippi's enforcement of its same-sex marriage ban. However, until July 2, 2015, several counties in Mississippi continued to refuse to issue same-sex couple marriage licenses, including DeSoto, Jasper, Jones, Newton, Pontotoc, Simpson and Yalobusha.

Primary elections were held on August 4, 2015, with primary runoffs, necessary if no candidate wins a majority of the vote, to be held on August 25, 2015. The filing deadline for primary ballot access was February 27.

A special election for Mississippi's 1st congressional district was held on May 12, 2015, to fill the term left by the vacancy created by the death of Alan Nunnelee. Nunnelee, a member of the Republican Party, died on February 6, 2015.

The Virginia lieutenant gubernatorial election of 2017 was held on November 7, 2017. After the party primary elections were held, the major party nominees were Jill Vogel (Republican) and Justin Fairfax (Democrat). The incumbent Lieutenant Governor, Democrat Ralph Northam, declined to run for re-election in order to run for Governor. In the general election on November 7, 2017, Democratic nominee Justin Fairfax defeated Republican state Senator Jill Vogel to become the 41st lieutenant-governor of Virginia.

The 2018 South Carolina gubernatorial election was held on November 6, 2018, to elect the Governor of South Carolina. Incumbent Republican Governor Henry McMaster ran for election to a full term. The primary was held on June 12, with the Democrats nominating James E. Smith Jr.. Governor McMaster, having failed to win a majority of the vote, defeated John Warren in the Republican runoff on June 26. McMaster defeated Smith in the general election, thereby winning election to a full term.

The 2018 Ohio gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 2018, to elect the next governor of Ohio, concurrently with the election of Ohio's Class I U.S. Senate seat, as well as other elections to the United States Senate in other states and elections to the United States House of Representatives and various Ohio and local elections. Incumbent Republican Governor John Kasich was term-limited and could not seek reelection to a third consecutive term.

2018 Nevada gubernatorial election

The 2018 Nevada gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 2018, to elect the next Governor of Nevada. Incumbent Republican Governor Brian Sandoval, was not eligible to run for reelection due to term limits established by the Nevada Constitution. Nevada is one of eight states that prohibits its governors from serving more than two terms for life.

The 2018 Pennsylvania gubernatorial election took place on November 6, 2018, to elect the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, concurrently with the election of Pennsylvania's Class I U.S. Senate seat, as well as elections to the United States House of Representatives and various local elections. Incumbent Democratic Governor Tom Wolf won re-election to a second term by a double-digit margin, defeating Republican challenger Scott Wagner and two third-party candidates from the Green Party and Libertarian Party, respectively. The primary elections were held on May 15.

The 2018 California lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 6, 2018, to elect the Lieutenant Governor of California. Incumbent Democratic Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom was ineligible to run for reelection due to term limits and successfully ran for Governor of California instead. Democrats Eleni Kounalakis and Ed Hernandez faced each other in the general election, as no Republican finished in the top two positions of the nonpartisan blanket primary that was held on June 5, 2018.

2019 Kentucky gubernatorial election

The 2019 Kentucky gubernatorial election will take place on November 5 to choose the Governor of Kentucky. Primary elections will occur on May 21, 2019. Incumbent Republican Governor Matt Bevin is eligible to run for reelection to a second term. Bevin has announced that he will run for a second term, choosing State Senator Ralph Alvarado as his running mate over incumbent Lieutenant Governor Jenean Hampton. Since the state's constitutional prohibition of governors serving consecutive terms was repealed in 1992, no Republican Governor of Kentucky has ever been elected to consecutive terms. The only Republican to run for reelection, Ernie Fletcher, was defeated by Democrat Steve Beshear in 2007.

2018 United States Senate special election in Mississippi

The 2018 United States Senate special election in Mississippi took place on November 6, 2018, to elect a United States Senator from Mississippi. The election was held to fill the seat vacated by Senator Thad Cochran when he resigned from the Senate, effective April 1, 2018, due to health concerns. Republican governor Phil Bryant appointed Cindy Hyde-Smith to fill the vacancy created by Cochran's resignation. Hyde-Smith sought election to serve the balance of Cochran's term, which expires in January 2021.
