Charles Evans Hughes Sr. was an American statesman,politician,academic,and jurist who served as the 11th chief justice of the United States from 1930 to 1941. A member of the Republican Party,he previously was the 36th governor of New York (1907–1910),an associate justice of the Supreme Court (1910–1916),and 44th U.S. secretary of state (1921–1925). As the Republican nominee in the 1916 presidential election,he lost narrowly to Woodrow Wilson.
Salmon Portland Chase was an American politician and jurist who served as the sixth chief justice of the United States from 1864 to his death in 1873. Chase served as the 23rd governor of Ohio from 1856 to 1860,represented Ohio in the United States Senate from 1849 to 1855 and again in 1861,and served as the 25th United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1861 to 1864 during the administration of Abraham Lincoln. Chase is therefore one of the few American politicians who have served in the highest levels of all three branches of the federal government,in addition to serving in the highest state-level office. William Rufus Day was an American diplomat and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1903 to 1922. Prior to his service on the Supreme Court,Day served as United States Secretary of State during the administration of President William McKinley. He also served as a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the United States Circuit Courts for the Sixth Circuit.
William Burnham Woods was an American jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. An appointee of President Rutherford B. Hayes,he served from 1881 until 1887. He wrote the majority opinion in United States v. Harris,involving the constitutionality of the Ku Klux Klan Act,and Presser v. Illinois,involving the application of the Second Amendment to the states;both cases adopted a narrow interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment. He dissented rarely and wrote mostly uncontroversial opinions,and he has been largely forgotten by history.
