The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is the highest court in the federal judiciary of the United States. It has ultimate appellate jurisdiction over all U.S. federal court cases,and over state court cases that turn on questions of U.S. constitutional or federal law. It also has original jurisdiction over a narrow range of cases,specifically "all Cases affecting Ambassadors,other public Ministers and Consuls,and those in which a State shall be Party." The court holds the power of judicial review,the ability to invalidate a statute for violating a provision of the Constitution. It is also able to strike down presidential directives for violating either the Constitution or statutory law.
The chief justice of the United States is the chief judge of the Supreme Court of the United States and is the highest-ranking officer of the U.S. federal judiciary. Article II,Section 2,Clause 2 of the U.S. Constitution grants plenary power to the president of the United States to nominate,and,with the advice and consent of the United States Senate,appoint "Judges of the supreme Court",who serve until they die,resign,retire,or are impeached and convicted. The existence of a chief justice is only explicit in Article I,Section 3,Clause 6 which states that the chief justice shall preside over the impeachment trial of the president;this has occurred three times,for Andrew Johnson,Bill Clinton,and for Donald Trump.
Hugo Lafayette Black was an American lawyer,politician,and jurist who served as a U.S. Senator from Alabama from 1927 to 1937 and as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1937 to 1971. A member of the Democratic Party and a devoted New Dealer,Black endorsed Franklin D. Roosevelt in both the 1932 and 1936 presidential elections.

The Center for Reproductive Medicine and Mobile Infirmary Association is a 2024 Alabama Supreme Court case in which the court held that frozen embryos should be considered as living beings,allowing for in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics to be held liable for the accidental loss of embryos under Alabama's Wrongful Death of a Minor law.
