Mogra is a nightclub located in Akihabara, Tokyo, Japan. The club specializes in DJs that play music associated with otaku culture, including anime, video game, J-pop, and J-core music.

History

The club was founded by Akihabara-based promoter DEARSTAGE, Inc., [1] and opened its doors in August of 2009. [2] Its first resident DJ, D-YAMA, had recently begun performing DJ sets incorporating remixes he had found on the video sharing platform Nico Nico Douga, such as Vocaloid songs, and Touhou Project arrangements. [1] GamesIndustry.biz described the club as having been "long known both inside and outside of Japan as a geeky music club in the heart of Akiba, with cheap drinks and anime and video game music blasting through its compact underground space." [3]

American musician Porter Robinson has regularly visited Mogra when in Tokyo, describing it as "one of my favorite places in the world." In 2022, the club hosted a Crunchyroll-sponsored stage entitled "Anime Shelter" at his Second Sky Festival event in San Francisco, which featured a lineup of its resident DJs. [4] [5] The club also hosts Tokyo Indies, a monthly gathering of Japanese indie game developers. [3]

In April 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mogra organized an online event called "Music Unity 2020" in cooperation with other Japanese clubs and music venues. The event featured 17 DJs playing music from their homes or from closed venues, and was streamed online via Mogra's Twitch channel. The event also included a fundraiser, with proceeds going to participating artists and venues, as well as medical institutions. [6]

Mogra appears in the final episode of the first season of Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend , where Michiru's band plays at an event held at the club. [7]

In 2021, Zouk Singapore was ranked number 11 while Zouk KL was ranked 33 on the DJ Mag Top 100 Clubs list in the world.

<i>Animegao kigurumi</i> Masked costume cosplay

Animegao kigurumi is a type of masked cosplay that has its origins in the official stage shows of various Japanese anime but has also been adapted by hobbyists. In Japan, most performers refer to this kind of cosplay as 'kigurumi' instead of 'animegao', which has been used overseas in order to differentiate the cosplay from the onesies sharing the same name. The term 'dollar' had also been used when referring to kigurumi cosplayers, but today mainly refers to BJD-styled masked cosplays. Although kigurumi remains a minor part of Japan's cosplay scene, it began attracting overseas attention in North America and Europe around 2005.

The word Ageha is Japanese for 'Swallowtail butterfly'. The event's name has also been presented in the 3-letter-version 'AGH' in capital letters, for instance on the official staff shirts. If the three letters are pronounced separately in German, they are pronounced as "ah-geh-ha", similar to the Japanese pronunciation of the club's name.

Club Glow is the longest running electronic music event promoter on the East Coast and venue owner based in Washington, DC. Established in 1999. They currently operate the venues Echostage and Soundcheck and host numerous large-scale events and music festivals at the DC Armory and RFK Stadium, including Project GLOW and Moonrise Music Festival. <i>Yuri on Ice</i> 2016 sports anime television series

Yuri on Ice is a Japanese sports anime television series about figure skating. The series was produced by MAPPA, directed and written by Sayo Yamamoto with original scripts by Mitsurō Kubo under the chief episode direction of Jun Shishido. Character designs were handled by Tadashi Hiramatsu, and its music was composed by Taro Umebayashi and Taku Matsushiba. The figure skating was choreographed by Kenji Miyamoto, who also performed routines himself which were recorded and used as skating sound effects. The series premiered on October 6, 2016, and ended on December 22, 2016, with a total of 12 episodes. A Yuri on Ice feature film, Ice Adolescence, was originally planned for release in 2019, but has since been cancelled as of April 2024. The series revolves around the relationships between Japanese figure skater Yuri Katsuki; his idol, Russian figure-skating champion Victor Nikiforov; and up-and-coming Russian skater Yuri Plisetsky; as Yuri K. and Yuri P. take part in the Figure Skating Grand Prix, with Victor acting as coach to Yuri K.

Road to Ultra (RTU) events are one day, single-stage events created and founded by the team behind the electronic dance music festival, Ultra Music Festival. Stage designs are also curated by the Ultra Worldwide team and are adapted to accommodate the needs of indoor and outdoor venues. RTU made its debut in 2012 in Seoul, Korea leading up to the second edition of Ultra Korea, which took place the following year. Since then, Road to Ultra events have landed in Thailand, Colombia, Peru, Macau, Japan, Taiwan, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Bolivia, the Philippines, Singapore, Chile, and Hong Kong. As of 2017, new Road to Ultra events have taken place in India in September 2017, as well as Australia in February 2018.
