The district includes most of central Houston. She was a member of the Democratic Party and served as an at-large member of the Houston City Council before being elected to the House. She was also co-dean of Texas's congressional delegation.

Leticia Rosa Magdalena Aguilar Van de Putte (née San Miguel;born December 6,1954) is an American politician from San Antonio,Texas. She represented the 26th District in the Texas Senate from 1999–2015. From 1991 to 1999,Van de Putte was a member of the Texas House of Representatives. In 2014,she was the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor but lost the general election,58-39 percent,to her Republican senatorial colleague,Dan Patrick of Houston. Following that defeat,she then resigned from the Texas Senate to run for mayor of San Antonio,which she narrowly lost to Ivy Taylor,52-48 percent.

The race is officially nonpartisan. After no candidate received a majority of the votes,the top two candidates –City Controller Annise Parker and former City Attorney Gene Locke –faced each other in a runoff election on December 12,2009. On November 11,councilman Peter Brown publicly endorsed Parker in the Mayor's race. Annise Parker won the run-off.

It was founded in 1975,and is the largest LGBTQ political organization in the city of Houston and Harris County. It is known locally simply as "The Caucus". The Caucus is nonpartisan and endorses candidates on the basis of their support for LGBTQ rights,regardless of political party or candidate's sexual orientation.

David Alameel,who came in first in the primary,won the runoff and became his party's nominee. In the general election,Cornyn defeated Alameel in a landslide.

Republicans won eight of the fifteen seats up for election,flipping one from the Democrats.
