Dr. Monica A. Driscoll is a biochemist known for her research on neuronal aging and degeneration in the model organism C. elegans. She is a Distinguished Professor of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Rutgers University. She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2023 for her work in genetics and cellular and molecular neuroscience.
Driscoll earned her A.B. in Chemistry summa cum laude in 1979 from Douglass College of Rutgers University. She earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University in the Department of Cellular and Developmental Biology under Dr. Helen Greer in 1985 for her research on the regulation of gene expression in the model yeast,Saccharomyces cerevisiae. [1] Her thesis is titled Regulation of Amino Acid Biosynthesis in S. cerevisiae.
After earning her doctorate,Driscoll began research on the model animal system,Caenorhabditis elegans to understand the molecular mechanisms and genetics of neuronal degeneration. [1] She briefly worked with Dr. Dan Stinchomb and Dr. Victor Ambros at Harvard University after graduation. Driscoll worked from 1985 to 1991 as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in Nobel prize winner Dr. Martin Chalfie's lab.
Driscoll was hired as a professor at Rutgers University in 1991 in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. She earned her tenure there in 1997 and became a distinguished professor in 2015. [1] Her laboratory focuses on the biology of aging and neurodegeneration. This research has important applications in understanding neurodegenerative diseases,such as Parkinson's Disease. [2]
Driscoll's lab is credited with discovering exophers in 2017 in C. elegans. Exophers are cellular "trash bags" which aid in removing physiological waste from some cell types,including muscle and neuron cells,in response to stressors. [3]
Driscoll was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences in 2023 in genetics (primary subfield) and cellular and molecular neuroscience (secondary subfield). [4] Driscoll served on the National Institute on Aging National Advisory Committee on Aging from 2019 to 2023.

Cornelia Isabella "Cori" Bargmann is an American neurobiologist. She is known for her work on the genetic and neural circuit mechanisms of behavior using C. elegans,particularly the mechanisms of olfaction in the worm. She has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and had been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at UCSF and then Rockefeller University from 1995 to 2016. She was the Head of Science at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative from 2016 to 2022. In 2012 she was awarded the $1 million Kavli Prize,and in 2013 the $3 million Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences.
Richard I. Morimoto is a Japanese American molecular biologist. He is the Bill and Gayle Cook Professor of Biology and Director of the Rice Institute for Biomedical Research at Northwestern University.

Karen Oegema is a molecular cell biologist at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and a professor of cellular and molecular medicine at the University of California,San Diego. She is best known for her research with Caenorhabditis elegans,which her lab uses as a model system in their mission to dissect the molecular mechanics of cytokinesis. She was given the Women in Cell Biology Mid-Career Award for Excellence in Research in 2017,as well as the Women in Cell Biology Junior Award for Excellence in Research in 2006.
UrtėNeniškytė is a Lithuanian neuroscientist. Her scientific interest and main area of work relates to the interaction of neurons and immune cells in the brain. She has studied the cellular mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease and is the co-author of the first articles about cell death in relation to phagocytosis.
