The Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) is a biennial multi-sport event, launched by the Republic of San Marino, organized by and featuring the National Olympic Committees of nine European small states since 1985. The Games are held at the end of May or beginning of June and feature competition in nine Summer Olympic sports.

Montenegro participated at the Olympic Games for the first time as an independent nation in 2008, at the Beijing Games. Previously, Montenegrin athletes have competed as part of Serbia and Montenegro in 2004 and as part of Yugoslavia before that.

The Belgrade Trophy is an international basketball competition between national teams, which has been held annually since 2012 and takes place in Belgrade, Serbia each summer, before the big official FIBA tournaments, such as the FIBA EuroBasket, the FIBA World Cup, and the Summer Olympic Games. The tournament is organized by the Basketball Federation of Serbia. The competition is played under FIBA rules.
