Moosonee station is a railway station in Moosonee, Ontario, Canada operated by the Ontario Northland Railway. It is the northern terminus of Ontario Northland's Polar Bear Express , located about 12 miles (19 km) south of the shore of James Bay on the north bank of the Moose River. [1] It consists of a single storey station building, sheds, and a small train yard.
The station is located on Arena Road, which marks the northern boundary of the townsite. Directly southeast of the station lie the Moosonee Arena, Super 8 by Wyndham hotel, [2] Moosonee Public School [3] and the Moosonee Campus of Northern College. [4]
As of April 2021, the train operates four days per week, with an afternoon arrival and early evening departure on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. [5]
Moosonee is a base for cargo shipping to settlements not already served by the railroad. Tracks run past the station out to the Moosonee Airport with a siding along the Moose River (beside Revillon Road North) for bringing freight to barges. [6] [7] Box cars are stored at the terminus until trains run south for the return trip to North Bay or Toronto.
The station was built in the 1960s and renovated with new sidings in 2009. The first station in Moosonee was built in 1932 by the then Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway.[ citation needed ]
The MV Niska I passenger-vehicle and freight ferry operated by the Owen Sound Transportation Company connects Moosonee to Moose Factory across the river on a seasonal basis. The ferry departs from the bank of the Moose River, roughly 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) south of the station. [8] [9] [10]
Moosonee station is one of only two train stations in Canada located near Hudson Bay. The other is Churchill station, located several hundred kilometers to the northwest on the shore of Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba.

The Polar Bear Express is a Canadian passenger train operated by the Ontario Northland Railway in Northern Ontario. Service was introduced in 1964. While designated as a passenger train, the Polar Bear Express also carries freight and is equipped with specialized equipment including boxcars for canoes, snowmobiles and all terrain vehicles. There are also baggage and express cars. In the past a special car existed for canoes but now these are carried in regular boxcars.
The Moose River is a river in the Hudson Plains ecozone of northern Ontario, Canada. The river flows 100 km northeast from the confluence of the Mattagami and Missinaibi Rivers into James Bay. Its drainage basin is 108,500 square kilometres (41,900 sq mi) and it has a mean discharge rate of 1,370 cubic metres (48,000 cu ft). The Northlander was a passenger train operated by the provincially-owned Ontario Northland Railway in southwest and northeast Ontario, Canada. Rail service will be reinstated in the mid-2020s with an expanded route, greater frequency, new Siemens Venture train sets manufactured by Siemens Mobility Ltd., and various track and station upgrades. It is approximately 30 kilometres (19 mi) north of the town of Cochrane, and is the northern terminus of Ontario Highway 579. The community is also astride the Ontario Northland Railway line from Cochrane to Moosonee, but is not served by Polar Bear Express passenger trains.

Cochrane station is an inter-city railway and bus station located in the town of Cochrane, Ontario Canada operated by the Ontario Northland Railway (ONR). It is the southern terminus of the Polar Bear Express service to Moosonee and former northern terminus of the discontinued Northlander route. The station is located in downtown Cochrane, south of the intersection of Railway Street and 7th Avenue. Its main entrance faces north to Railway Street. South of the station building, trains call at a low level platform adjacent to the ONR Island Falls Subdivision.

Blount is a railway point and unincorporated place in the eponymous geographic Blount Township, Cochrane District, Ontario, Canada. It is on the Ontario Northland Railway line from Cochrane to Moosonee, between the community of Gardiner to the north and Clute railway station to the south, but is not served by Polar Bear Express passenger trains.
The Groundhog River is a river in Cochrane District and Sudbury District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. The river is in the James Bay drainage basin and is a left tributary of the Mattagami River.
