Mount Ethelred ( 70°4′S69°29′W / 70.067°S 69.483°W / -70.067; -69.483 ) is a mainly ice-covered mountain, 2,470 metres (8,100 ft) high, 3 nautical miles (6 km) southeast of Mount Ethelwulf and 8 nautical miles (15 km) inland from George VI Sound, in the Douglas Range of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The mountain was probably first observed by Lincoln Ellsworth, who photographed the east side of the Douglas Range from the air on November 23, 1935; its east face was roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition. It was resurveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and named for Ethelred I, Saxon King of England, 865–871. The west face of the mountain was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the FIDS in 1960. [1] Mount Ethelred is the seventh highest peak of Alexander Island, proceeded by Mount Calais.

Mount Ethelwulf

Mount Ethelwulf is a mainly ice-covered mountain, 2,590 metres (8,500 ft) high, standing between Mount Egbert and Mount Ethelred at the head of Tumble Glacier, in the Douglas Range of northeast Alexander Island, Antarctica. The mountain was probably first observed by Lincoln Ellsworth, who photographed the east side of the Douglas Range from the air on November 23, 1935; its east face was roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition under John Rymill. It was resurveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) and named for Ethelwulf, Saxon King of England, 839–858. The west face of the mountain was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the FIDS in 1960. Mount Ethelwulf is the fourth highest peak of Alexander Island, succeeded by Mount Paris and proceeded by Mount Huckle.

George VI Sound

George VI Sound or Canal Jorge VI or Canal Presidente Sarmiento or Canal Seaver or King George VI Sound or King George the Sixth Sound is a major bay/fault depression, 300 miles (483 km) long in the shape of the letter J, which skirts the east and south shores of Alexander Island, separating it from Palmer Land, in the southern portion of the Antarctic Peninsula and the English Coast. Various lakes are adjacent to the sound, these lakes receive large amounts of ice flowing from George VI Ice Shelf into the mouth of these lakes. Some of these include Hodgson Lake, Moutonnee Lake and Ablation Lake. Several glaciers also flow eastward into the sound from the east interior of Alexander Island, the vast majority of these glaciers are situated south of Planet Heights, where all of these glaciers are named after moons, satellites and planets of the solar system in association with nearby Planet Heights which was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1977.

The Douglas Range is a sharp-crested range, with peaks rising to 3,000 metres, extending 120 km in a northwest-southeast direction from Mount Nicholas to Mount Edred and forming a steep east escarpment of Alexander Island within the British Antarctic Territory, overlooking the north part of George VI Sound.

Mount Stephenson

Mount Stephenson a mountain in Antarctica. It is located within the central portion of the Douglas Range, standing at the heads of Toynbee Glacier and Sedgwick Glacier 8 miles west of George VI Sound, near the east coast of Alexander Island within the British Antarctic Territory. At an elevation of 2,987 metres (9,800 ft), Mount Stephenson is the highest mountain in the Douglas Range and the highest point on Alexander Island. Mount Egbert ranks second, standing at 2,895 m and lies 8 nautical miles (15 km) south-southeast of Mount Stephenson.

The LeMay Range is a mountain range 40 nautical miles (70 km) long with peaks rising to 2,000 metres (6,600 ft), extending in a northwest–southeast direction from Snick Pass to the north side of Uranus Glacier in the central portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first seen from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and the north and east portions mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. Later, it was resighted from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, and named by Finn Ronne for General Curtis LeMay, Deputy Chief of Air Staff for Research and Development of the then United States Army Air Forces, which furnished equipment for the expedition. The range was remapped in detail from RARE photos by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960.

Mount Huckle is a mainly ice-covered mountain, 2,500 metres (8,200 ft) high, near the northern end of the Douglas Range in eastern Alexander Island, Antarctica. It rises 7 miles (11 km) south-southeast of Mount Spivey on the west side of Toynbee Glacier and is 9 miles (14 km) inland from George VI Sound. Mount Huckle is the fourth highest mountain of Alexander Island, proceeded by Mount Cupola and succeeded by Mount Paris in the nearby Rouen Mountains.

Rouen Mountains

The Rouen Mountains are a prominent mountain range, reaching to about 2,800 m and extending 35 miles (60 km) NW-SE from Mount Bayonne to Care Heights and Mount Cupola, in north Alexander Island, Antarctica. This mountain range is known to occupy some of the highest peaks of Alexander Island, much like the nearby Douglas Range. Mount Paris is the highest point of the Rouen Mountains, exceeding 2,800 m approximately.

Clifford Glacier is a broad glacier, about 40 nautical miles (70 km) long, flowing in an east-northeast direction to the gap between Mount Tenniel and the Eland Mountains, and then east to Smith Inlet on the east coast of Palmer Land. The upper part of this glacier was charted in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition under John Rymill; the seaward side by the United States Antarctic Service survey party which explored along this coast in 1940. During 1947 it was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition under Finn Ronne, who in conjunction with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) charted it from the ground. It was named in 1952 by the FIDS for Sir G. Miles Clifford, at that time Governor of the Falkland Islands.

Mount Nicholas is a mountain, 1,465 m, standing 5.5 nautical miles (10 km) south-southwest of Cape Brown and forming the northern limit of the Douglas Range on the east side of Alexander Island, Antarctica.

Nichols Snowfield is a snowfield, 22 nautical miles (41 km) long and 8 nautical miles (15 km) wide, bounded by the Rouen Mountains and Elgar Uplands to the east and Lassus Mountains to the west, in the north part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The snowfield was first sighted from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) in 1937. Mapped in detail from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. Named by the RARE for Dr. Robert L. Nichols, head of the Department of Geology, Tufts University, and senior scientist of the Ronne expedition.

Tumble Glacier is a glacier extending along the east side of Alexander Island, Antarctica, 7 nautical miles (13 km) long and 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide, which flows east from the cliffs of Mount Egbert, Mount Ethelwulf and Mount Ethelred of the Douglas Range into the west side of the George VI Ice Shelf that occupies George VI Sound immediately south of Mount King. The glacier was first roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition under Rymill. Resurveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, and so named by them because of the extremely broken condition of the lower reaches of the glacier.

Toynbee Glacier is a glacier situated in the northeast portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica, extending 17 nautical miles (31 km) long and 5 nautical miles (9 km) wide, lying between Mount Huckle, Mount Spivey and Mount Stephenson of the northern portion of the Douglas Range on the west and Mount Tyrrell and Mount Tilley on the east. It flows north from the east face of Mount Stephenson into the George VI Ice Shelf that occupies George VI Sound. The glacier was first photographed from the air in 1937 by the British Graham Land Expedition under Rymill. Surveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey and named for Patrick A. Toynbee, FIDS air pilot at Stonington Island in 1948 and 1949.

Grimley Glacier is a tributary glacier, 15 nautical miles (28 km) long and 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide, lying 3 nautical miles north of Sunfix Glacier and flowing east-northeast into Casey Glacier in northern Palmer Land, Antarctica. The glacier was photographed from the air by the United States Antarctic Service on September 28, 1940, and by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition on December 22, 1947. It was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in December 1960 and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Peter H. Grimley of FIDS, a geologist at Horseshoe Island and Stonington Island in 1960.

Purcell Snowfield is a snowfield, 15 nautical miles (28 km) wide, lying between the east portion of the Colbert Mountains and the west side of the Douglas Range in the central part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The feature was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. The snowfield was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Henry Purcell (1659–1695), English composer.

Mount Edred

Mount Edred is a prominent ice-covered mountain, 2,195 metres (7,200 ft) high, which stands 10 nautical miles (19 km) inland from George VI Sound, lies about 12 miles (19 km) north of Galileo Cliffs, and marks the southern limit of the Douglas Range on Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935 by Lincoln Ellsworth and mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. Its east side was roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition and resurveyed in 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS). It was named by the FIDS for Edred, a Saxon king of England in the 10th century. The west face of the mountain was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the FIDS in 1960. Mount Edred is the ninth highest peak of Alexander Island, succeeded by Mount Calais and proceeded by Mount Spivey.

The Eland Mountains are a range of mountains which rise above 2,440 metres (8,000 ft) and extend about 20 nautical miles (40 km) in a northeast–southwest direction along the south side of Clifford Glacier, on the east coast of Palmer Land. The mountains were discovered in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition, and they appear in aerial photographs taken by the United States Antarctic Service in September 1940. During 1947 they were photographed from the air by members of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, who in conjunction with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), charted them from the ground. The name Eland, Lady Clifford's maiden name, was given in 1952 by Sir Miles Clifford, Governor of the Falkland Islands, at the request of members of the FIDS staff.

Mount Tyrrell is an irregular mountain with two summits, the highest rising to a maximum height of 1,310 metres (4,300 ft), standing 3 nautical miles (6 km) inland from the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica, situated on the east side and near the mouth of Toynbee Glacier. The mountain was first photographed from the air in 1937 by the British Graham Land Expedition under Rymill. The mountain was surveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey and was named by them for George W. Tyrrell, British geologist at the University of Glasgow, Scotland.

Mount Tilley is a flat-topped, ice-capped mountain, rising to about 1,900 m, lying about 7 nautical miles (13 km) south of Mount Tyrrell and 3 nautical miles (6 km) inland from George VI Sound in the east part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. Despite its height, it is best described as a foothill of the Douglas Range, from which it is separated by Toynbee Glacier. The mountain was first photographed from the air in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition. Surveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey and named by them for Cecil E. Tilley, professor of mineralogy and petrology at Cambridge University.

Lamina Peak is a prominent pyramid-shaped peak, 1,280 metres (4,200 ft) high, surmounting a stratified ridge which curves down from Mount Edred northeastward toward George VI Sound. The peak stands 4.5 nautical miles (8 km) inland from the east coast of Alexander Island near the southern limit of the Douglas Range. It was first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth and mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. It was roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition and resurveyed in 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), and was so named by the FIDS because of the marked horizontal stratification of the rocks of this peak.

Mount Alfred is an ice-capped mountain, more than 2,000 m, 5.5 nautical miles (10 km) inland from George VI Sound and 8 nautical miles (15 km) south of Mount Athelstan in the Douglas Range of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth and mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. Its east face was roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) and resurveyed in 1948 and 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), who named it for Alfred, Saxon king of England, 871-899. The west face of the mountain was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the FIDS in 1960.
