Mount Gleadell

Mount Gleadell ( 66°57′S50°27′E / 66.950°S 50.450°E / -66.950; 50.450 Coordinates: 66°57′S50°27′E / 66.950°S 50.450°E / -66.950; 50.450 ) is a nearly conical ice-free peak, 560 metres (1,840 ft) high, the highest summit on the headland just north of Observation Island at the east side of Amundsen Bay, Antarctica. It was sighted in October 1956 by an Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions party under P.W. Crohn, and was named for Geoffrey Gleadell, a cook at Mawson Station in 1954. [1]

A headland is a coastal landform, a point of land usually high and often with a sheer drop, that extends into a body of water. It is a type of promontory. A headland of considerable size often is called a cape. Headlands are characterised by high, breaking waves, rocky shores, intense erosion, and steep sea cliffs.

Amundsen Bay, also known as Ice Bay, is a long embayment 39 kilometres (24 mi) wide, close west of the Tula Mountains in Enderby Land, Antarctica. The bay was seen as a large pack-filled recession in the coastline by Sir Douglas Mawson on January 14, 1930. Seen by Captain Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen in charge of a Norwegian expedition during an airplane flight on January 15 and subsequently mapped nearer its true position by the Norwegians. The bay was mapped in detail by an Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions party landed by aircraft in 1956 and another landed by launch from Thala Dan in February 1958. It was named by Mawson after Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian explorer who was first to reach the South Pole.

Beaver Glacier is a glacier about 15 miles (24 km) long and 4 miles (6 km) wide, flowing west into Amundsen Bay between Auster Glacier and Mount Gleadell. The head of Beaver Glacier is located very close to the base of Mount King in Enderby Land. It was visited by an Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) party on October 28, 1956, and named after the Beaver aircraft used by ANARE in coastal exploration.

Crosson Ice Shelf is an Antarctic ice shelf, about 35 miles (56 km) wide, north and northeast of Mount Murphy along the Walgreen Coast of Marie Byrd Land. The ice shelf is nurtured by Smith, Pope, Vane, and Haynes Glaciers. It was mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey from surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1959–66, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Commander W.E. Crosson, U.S. Navy, Commanding Officer of the Antarctic Construction Group during Operation Deep Freeze 1973.

Mount Bartlett is a mountain 3 nautical miles (6 km) southeast of Mount Storer, in the Tula Mountains in Enderby Land. It was plotted from air photos taken from ANARE aircraft in 1956 and 1957. It was named by the Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) for A.J. Bartlett, a member of the crew of the Discovery during the British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) of 1929-31.

Canyon Glacier is a narrow glacier, 35 nautical miles (65 km) long, flowing to the Ross Ice Shelf. It drains the northwest slopes of Mount Wexler and moves northward between steep canyon walls of the Separation Range and Hughes Range to join the ice shelf immediately west of Giovinco Ice Piedmont. The glacier was observed from nearby Mount Patrick by the New Zealand Alpine Club Antarctic Expedition (1959–60) who gave the descriptive name.

Cleaves Glacier is a glacier in the Holland Range, flowing northwest from Mount Reid into the east side of Robb Glacier. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from tellurometer surveys (1961–62) and Navy air photos (1960), and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Harold H. Cleaves, Master of the USNS Pvt. Joseph F. Merrell during Operation Deepfreeze 1964–65.

Mount England is a conical-topped mountain, 1,205 metres (3,950 ft) high, rising immediately south of New Glacier in the northeast part of Gonville and Caius Range, in Victoria Land. It was discovered by the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901–04, under Robert Falcon Scott, who named it for Royal Navy Lieutenant Rupert England of the Morning, relief ship to the expedition.

Crohn Massif is a large, domed massif in Antarctica, 3 nautical miles (6 km) west of Mount Kirkby in the Porthos Range, Prince Charles Mountains. It was sighted by an Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions southern party led by W.G. Bewsher (1956–57) and named for Peter W. Crohn, a geologist at Mawson Station in 1955 and 1956.

Mount Jewell is a mountain 3 nautical miles (6 km) south of Mount Cordwell and 25 nautical miles (46 km) south-southwest of Stor Hanakken Mountain in Enderby Land, Antarctica. It was plotted from air photos taken from Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions aircraft in 1957, and was named by the Antarctic Names Committee of Australia for F. Jewell, a geophysicist at Wilkes Station in 1961.

Glitrefonna Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Glitrefonna Glacier is a glacier at the north side of Mount Bergersen in the Sør Rondane Mountains of Antarctica. It was mapped by Norwegian cartographers in 1957 from air photos taken by U.S. Navy Operation Highjump, 1946–47, and named Glitrefonna.

Mount Goldring mountain in Antarctica

Mount Goldring is a peak on Pernik Peninsula, Loubet Coast, situated on the north side of Murphy Glacier, to the east of Lallemand Fjord in Graham Land, Antarctica. It was mapped from air photos obtained by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition, 1956–57, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Denis C. Goldring, a Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey geologist at nearby Detaille Island, 1957–59.

Mount Metcalfe is a mountain at the south side of the head of McMorrin Glacier, 1.5 nautical miles (3 km) south of Mount Wilcox, in Graham Land, Antarctica. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Robert J. Metcalfe, a British Antarctic Survey surveyor at Stonington Island, 1960–62, who surveyed the area in 1962.

Mount Harvey is a snow-free peak east of Amundsen Bay, standing in the Tula Mountains of Antarctica, about 6 nautical miles (11 km) east-northeast of Mount Gleadell. It was sighted in 1955 by an Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions party led by P.W. Crohn, and was named by the Antarctic Names Committee of Australia for William Harvey, a carpenter at Mawson Station in 1954.

Sirius Islands is a chain of islands in the north part of the Oygarden Group. Mapped by Norwegian cartographers from aerial photos taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition, 1936–37, and called Nordoyane. The group was first visited by an ANARE party in 1954; this chain was renamed by Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) after the star Sirius which was used for an astrofix in the vicinity.

Skorefjell is a mountain, 1,520 m, standing 17 kilometres (9 nmi) northeast of Stor Hanakken Mountain in the Napier Mountains in Enderby Land. It was mapped by Norwegian cartographers from air photos taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition of 1936–37 and was named Skorefjell.

Mount Terra Nova is a snow-covered mountain, 2,130 m (6,990 ft), between Mount Erebus and Mount Terror on Ross Island. First mapped by the Discovery expedition 1901-04, and named for Terra Nova, relief ship for this expedition and the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-13.

Mount Keinath is a mountain, 1,090 metres (3,580 ft) high, rising at the east side of the terminus of Boomerang Glacier in the Deep Freeze Range, Victoria Land, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1955–63, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Gerald E. Keinath, a biolab administrator at McMurdo Station in the 1965–66 season.

Mount Lunde is a mountain ridge close south of Mount Gleadell, in the western part of the Tula Mountains in Enderby Land, Antarctica. It was sighted by the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions Amundsen Bay party, under P.W. Crohn in October 1956, and was named by the Antarctic Names Committee of Australia for J. Lunde, a senior diesel mechanic at Wilkes Station in 1960.

Lidke Ice Stream is an ice stream about 25 nautical miles (50 km) long flowing north into Stange Sound, east of Mount Benkert, on the English Coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy aerial photographs, 1961–66, and was first visited by a USGS field party in January 1985. The ice stream was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after USGS geologist David J. Lidke, a member of the field party.

Mount Miller is a mountain 1 nautical mile (2 km) northwest of Pythagoras Peak, in the Tula Mountains of Enderby Land, Antarctica. It was plotted from air photos taken from Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions aircraft in 1956, and was named by the Antarctic Names Committee of Australia for J.J. Miller, a member of the crew of the RRS Discovery during the British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition of 1929–31.

Citadel Peak is a peak of volcanic rock along the south side of Vaughan Glacier, approximately 9.6 km east of Mount Vaughan, in the Queen Maud Mountains. Mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960-64. Its name was picked by the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (NZGSAE), 1969-70; since the summit is composed of vertical rock slabs, its strange appearance being reminiscent of a castle or citadel.
