Muhammad Sufyan Qasmi Siddiqi is an Indian Sunni Muslim scholar [1] and current rector of Darul Uloom Waqf, Deoband. [2]

Biography

Muhammad Sufyan Qasmi was born on 26 September 1954 into the Siddiqi family of Nanauta. [3] His father Muhammad Salim Qasmi was former rector of Darul Uloom Waqf, Deoband, whilst his grandfather Muhammad Tayyib Qasmi remained vice-chancellor of the Darul Uloom Deoband for about half century. [4] [5]

Qasmi graduated in traditional dars-e-nizami from the Darul Uloom Deoband in 1975. [6] He studied intermediate classes in private from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). He got a BA and an MA degree from the AMU in private and acquired an MA in Islamic theology from the Al-Azhar University. [7]

Qasmi began teaching at the Darul Uloom Waqf in 1983. He has taught the books of Hadith such as Sahih Bukhari and Tirmidhi along with other primary books of dars-e-nizami. [6] [7] He served the seminary as the deputy rector for 12 years, [3] and was appointed the rector on 3 September 2014. [8] He is also a member of the executive council of All India Muslim Personal Law Board since 2007. [7]

Views on knowledge

Qasmi maintains the view that knowledge is a unit and it is wrong to divide it as Islamic and Non-Islamic. He argues that in Islam, knowledge can be grouped as profitable (نافع) and non-profitable (غیر نافع). [9]

Muhammad Tayyib Qasmi was an Indian Sunni Islamic scholar who served as Vice Chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband for more than half a century. He was grandson of Muhammad Qasim Nanautavi, the founder of the Darul Uloom Deoband.

Izaz Ali Amrohi was an Indian Islamic scholar who served as the second and ninth Grand Mufti of the Darul Uloom Deoband. His book Nafahtul Arab is taught in madrassas including the Darul Uloom Deoband.

Al-Jamia Al-Islamia Darul Uloom Waqf Deoband is an Islamic seminary situated in the Indian town of Deoband. It was established by scholars led by Muhammad Salim Qasmi and Anzar Shah Kashmiri in 1982 as a result of administration disputes in Darul Uloom Deoband during 1980–1982. As of 2021, Muhammad Sufyan Qasmi is its rector.

Madrassa Shahi is an Islamic seminary in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. It was established in 1879 by the poor Muslims of Moradabad under the supervision of Islamic scholar, Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi, who also established the Darul Uloom Deoband. This started as Madrasatul Ghuraba, but gained recognition as Madrasa Shahi. Its first principal was Ahmad Hasan Amrohi.

Muhammad Salim Qasmi Siddiqi was an Indian Muslim scholar who co-founded the Darul Uloom Waqf in Deoband and served as its first rector. He was an alumnus of Darul Uloom Deoband. He received the fourth Shah Waliullah Award and was honoured with the Mark of Distinction from Egypt.

Saeed Ahmad Akbarabadi was an Indian Islamic scholar and an Urdu-language author who co-founded the Nadwatul Musannifeen. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Theology in Aligarh Muslim University.

Hifzur Rahman Seoharwi was an Indian Sunni Islamic scholar and an activist of the Indian independence movement, who served as the fourth general secretary of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind. He fought against British rule for 25 years (1922-1947) and spent eight years in jail. As a politician, he opposed the partition of India, and served as a member of the Indian Parliament for the Indian National Congress from Amroha from 1952 to 1962.

Hafiz Muhammad Ahmad (1862-1930) was an Indian Muslim scholar, who served as the Vice Chancellor of the Darul Uloom Deoband for thirty five years. He was the Grand Mufti of the Hyderabad State from 1922 to 1925.

Saeed Ahmad Palanpuri, was an Indian Sunni Muslim scholar and author who served as Shaykh al-Hadith and Principal of Darul Uloom Deoband. A number of his books are required readings in Darul Uloom Deoband.

Noor Alam Khalil Amini was an Indian Sunni Muslim scholar, academic and a litterateur of Arabic and Urdu. He was a senior professor of Arabic language and literature at the Darul Uloom Deoband. His book Falastin Fi Intezari Salahidin was subject of a doctoral study at Assam University and his book Miftahul Arabia is part of dars-e-nizami curricula in various madrasas.

The Siddiqi family of Nanauta are the descendants of the first Rashidun Caliph, Abu Bakr, based primarily in the town of Nanauta in India. The notable people of this family include Mamluk Ali Nanautawi, Muhammad Qasim Nanautawi, Muhammad Yaqub Nanautawi, Muhammad Tayyib Qasmi and Muhammad Salim Qasmi.

Abul Kalam Qasmi was an Indian scholar, critic, and poet of the Urdu language who served as the dean of the Faculty of Arts at the Aligarh Muslim University. He was the editor of Tehzeeb-ul-Akhlaq and authored books such as The Criticism of Poetry. He translated E. M. Forster's Aspects of the Novel into Urdu as Novel ka Fun. He was conferred with the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2009, and the Ghalib Award in 2013.

Abdul Khaliq Sambhali was an Indian Muslim scholar and writer who served as the vice-rector of Darul Uloom Deoband. He was an alumnus of the Deoband seminary and had studied with scholars including Mahmud Hasan Gangohi, Muhammad Tayyib Qasmi and Syed Fakhruddin Ahmad. He translated Abdul Majeed al-Zindani's Al-Tawḥīd into Urdu and gave religious discourses criticizing the Maududism.

Ghulam Nabi Kashmiri was a Kashmiri Muslim scholar and jurist who served as the senior professor of hadith at Darul Uloom Waqf. He also taught hadith at Jamia Ziya al-Uloom and Jamiat al-Tayyibat in Poonch. He was among the early graduates of Darul Uloom Waqf and authored books such as Hayat-e-Tayyib, a biography of Muhammad Tayyib Qasmi.
