The Mujib 100 T20 Cup Bangladesh 2020 [1] was a two-match Twenty20 International T20I series, that was to be hosted by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The two matches were scheduled to be played between an Asia XI and a World XI teams in March 2020. [2] The matches would have celebrated the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh. [3] The International Cricket Council (ICC) granted full international status to the two fixtures. [4] On 25 February 2020, the BCB named two tentative squads for the fixtures. [5] However, on 11 March 2020, the matches were "deferred until further notice" due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [6]

Background

In November 2019, the BCB made a request to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to allow seven of its players to be part of the Asia XI team. [7] Originally, India were scheduled to be playing their third One Day International (ODI) match against South Africa on the same day as the first fixture of this series. [8] However, in January 2020, the BCB announced that the first T20I match would take place on 21 March 2020, therefore avoiding the clash with the ODI match. [1] On 26 December 2019, the BCCI's Joint Secretary, Jayesh George stated that if Indian players are going to be a part of the Asia XI, no players from Pakistan would be allowed to play, due to the current India–Pakistan ongoing standoff. Five Indian cricketers out of seven, as requested by the BCB, would play for the Asia XI side, selected by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. [9] However, a BCB official denied the claim, saying that they do not have any such intention from an ethical ground. [10] Subsequently, a day later, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ehsan Mani confirmed that no Pakistan cricketers would be available for the tournament, as the dates clash with the 2020 Pakistan Super League schedule. The English cricket team toured India between November 2016 and January 2017 to play five Tests, three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the dates of the tour in July 2016. India last hosted a five-Test series in 1986–87 against Pakistan.

The Bangladesh cricket team toured India in February 2017 to play one Test match. It was the first time that Bangladesh toured India. Initially the tour was scheduled to take place in August 2016, but with other commitments made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said that the first week of February looked more likely. The date of the Test was confirmed in August 2016. In January 2017 the BCCI moved the date back by one day. The Decision Review System (DRS) was used in the Test match.

The Sri Lanka cricket team toured India in November and December 2017. The original schedule had the tour consisting of three Tests, five One Day Internationals (ODIs) and one Twenty20 International (T20I) match starting in February 2018.

The 2022 Asia Cup was the 15th edition of the Asia Cup cricket tournament, with the matches played as Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) during August and September 2022 in the United Arab Emirates. Originally scheduled to be held in September 2020, the tournament was postponed in July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was then rescheduled to take place in Sri Lanka in June 2021, before being postponed once again. Pakistan was scheduled to host the tournament after retaining the rights to host the 2022 edition. However, in October 2021, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) announced that Sri Lanka would host the tournament in 2022, with Pakistan hosting the 2023 edition. India were the defending champions, and were eliminated in the Super Four stage in this edition. Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 23 runs in the final, to win their sixth title and their first in T20I format.

The Bangladesh cricket team toured India in November 2019 to play two Test and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The Test series formed part of the inaugural 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship. It was the second time that Bangladesh toured India to play a Test series, and the first time that Bangladesh played a T20I series against India in India. The Test series also featured the first day/night match to be played by either side.

The Bangladesh cricket team toured Pakistan in January and February 2020 to play one Test match and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches against the Pakistan cricket team. The Test series formed part of the inaugural 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship.

The 2019–20 BPL season, also known as BPL 7 or Bangabandhu BPL Presented by Akash DTH and Powered by TVS, was the seventh season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the top level professional Twenty20 cricket league in Bangladesh. The competition was organised by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The season was scheduled to originally start from 6 December 2019 and end on 11 January 2020, with the opening ceremony to be held on 3 December 2019. Comilla Victorians were the defending champions. However, the tournament was delayed by five days and started on 11 December 2019 and ended on 17 January 2020, with the opening ceremony held on 8 December 2019.

The ODI series will form part of the inaugural 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. It will be the first bilateral T20I series between the two teams, and England's first tour of Bangladesh since 2016.
