Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are a franchise cricket team based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. They play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Founded in 2008, the team plays its home matches at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The team is owned by Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd and India Cements is the major stakeholder. The team served a two-year suspension from the IPL starting July 2015 due to the involvement of their owners in the 2013 IPL betting case, and won the title in its comeback season of 2018. The team is captained by MS Dhoni and coached by Stephen Fleming. They are the current defending champions, having won the 2021 IPL season. In January 2022, CSK became India's first unicorn sports enterprise.

The franchise was renamed from Chennai Smashers to Chennai Superstarz in 2020.

Delhi Dashers have been a part of the PBL since its inception and their best finish arrived in the Season 2 (2016), after defeating Mumbai Rockets in the finals. Owned by Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd., who became the new owners of the franchise from third season onwards, Delhi Dashers finished at the third position in the PBL season III (2017).

The tournament was played from 26 March 2022 to 29 May 2022. The group stage of the tournament was played entirely in the state of Maharashtra, with Mumbai and Pune hosting the matches. The full schedule of the tournament was announced on 6 March 2022.
