Munger, Tolles, & Olson LLP (MTO) is an American law firm with offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.. The firm represents clients in industries such as entertainment, technology, energy and healthcare. [3]

History

The firm was founded in 1962 by seven partners, including Charles Munger, Edwin Leroy “Roy” Tolles, Carla Hills and Rodrick Hills. [4] [5] In 1965, Munger left the firm to join Warren Buffett in a business partnership, eventually serving as vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, a client of the firm. [6] Ronald Olson was hired in 1968 and became partner in 1970. [7]

The firm opened an office in San Francisco in 1991. [8] In 2016, the firm hired former Solicitor General of the United States Donald B. Verrilli Jr. to launch an office in Washington D.C. [9]

In 2019, the firm elected Malcolm Heinicke and Hailyn Chen as co-managing partners, succeeding longtime firm leaders Brad Brian and Sandra Seville-Jones. Brad Brian was named as firm chair. [10] At the time of her election, Chen was only the second Asian woman to assume a leadership position at a major law firm. [11]

Some of the firm’s notable clients have included Google, Disney, Bank of America, PG&E, BNSF Railway, Intel, Fortress and Berkshire Hathaway. [1]

Munger, Tolles & Olson is known for its democratic approach to management. [9] It typically hires graduates from top law schools and promotes from within, and places high value on judicial clerkships. [12] [9] As of 2005, 19 of the firm's attorneys had clerked for justices on the U.S. Supreme Court. [13]

Recognition

Munger, Tolles & Olson ranked as the nation's top law firm on the American LawyerA-List from 2008 to 2010. [14] [15] [16] [17] In 2022, the firm had been ranked by Vault as the number one litigation boutique for eleven consecutive years. [18]

Charles Thomas Munger was an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist. He was vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate controlled by Warren Buffett; Buffett described Munger as his closest partner and right-hand man. Munger served as chairman of Wesco Financial Corporation from 1984 through 2011. He was also chairman of the Daily Journal Corporation, based in Los Angeles, California, and a director of Costco Wholesale Corporation.

Ronald L. Olson is an American attorney and a partner in the Los Angeles office of Munger Tolles & Olson LLP. He was the lead attorney representing the board of directors of Yahoo! in connection with Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Yahoo!, and was contemporaneously involved in Yahoo!'s Google outsourcing contract.

Carolyn Barbara Kuhl is a judge on the Superior Court of California for the County of Los Angeles and a former nominee to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Donald Beaton Verrilli Jr. is an American lawyer who served as the solicitor general of the United States from 2011 to 2016. President Barack Obama nominated Verrilli to the post on January 26, 2011. On June 6, the United States Senate confirmed Verrilli in a 72–16 vote, and he was sworn in on June 9. Verrilli previously served in the Obama administration as the associate deputy attorney general and as Deputy Counsel to the President. He is currently a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Munger, Tolles & Olson and a lecturer at Columbia University Law School, his alma mater.
