Politics of Ghana takes place in a framework of a presidential representative democratic republic,whereby the president of Ghana is head of state and head of government,and of a 2 party system. The seat of government is at Golden Jubilee House. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in the government and Parliament. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is a centre-right and liberal-conservative political party in Ghana. Since the democratisation of Ghana in 1992,it has been one of the two dominant parties in Ghanaian politics,with its leading rival being the centre-left National Democratic Congress (NDC). John Kufuor of the NPP was President of Ghana from 2001 to 2009. At the elections held on 7 December 2004,the party won 129 out of 230 seats. The NPP candidate was Kufuor,who was re-elected as president with 52.75% of the vote. The New Patriotic Party symbol is the African elephant and the New Patriotic Party colours are red,white,and blue.
Jerry John Rawlings was a Ghanaian military officer,aviator and politician who led the country for a brief period in 1979,and then from 1981 to 2001. He led a military junta until 1992,and then served two terms as the democratically elected president of Ghana.
Kwamena Ahwoi is a Ghanaian academic and politician,who served as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development from 1990 to 2001 in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government,during the reign of Jerry Rawlings. He also briefly served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1997,and was acting minister in that department during much of the 1990s.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is a Ghanaian politician who has served as the president of Ghana since 2017. He previously served as Attorney General from 2001 to 2003 and as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2007 under the Kufuor-led administration.

Justice Daniel Francis Kweipe Annan was a Ghanaian politician and judge. He served as Speaker of the 1st &2nd parliaments of Ghana's Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001. He was a member of the Provisional National Defence Council which governed Ghana prior the Fourth Republic from 1985 to 1992,and was Chairman of the National Commission for Democracy within this period. Prior to joining the executive arm of government in 1985,he had been a judge of the Ghanaian Court of Appeal.
Brigadier Joseph Nunoo-Mensah is a Ghanaian soldier and politician. He is a former Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces. He was also a member of the Provisional National Defence Council government which overthrew the government of Dr. Hilla Limann in 1981.
Albert Kwadwo Adu Boahen was a Ghanaian academic,historian,and politician. He was an academic at the University of Ghana from 1959 to 1990,from 1971 onwards as a professor. As a politician,he notably was a candidate in the 1992 Ghanaian presidential election,representing the main opposition New Patriotic Party.

Martin Alamisi Burnes Kaiser Amidu is a Ghanaian politician and lawyer who served as Attorney General and Minister for Justice in Ghana from 2011 to 2012 and then as the First Special Prosecutor of the country from 2018 until his resignation in 2020,citing political interference by the President,Nana Akufo-Addo. He is also known for introducing the word ‘gargantuan‘,into the body politics of Ghana,when he opened investigations in the Woyome scandal which was one of the highest profiled corruption cases at the time. On 11 January 2018,Martin A.B.K Amidu was named by the President of Ghana as the Special Prosecutor for the newly created Office of the Special Prosecutor. Nana Akufo-Addo touted his anti-corruption fights as Attorney General and a private citizen as reasons for choosing Mr. Amidu,his one-time political adversary.
Ghana gained independence from the British on 6 March 1957. It is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The country became a republic on July 1,1960.
The Minister for Finance and Economic Planning is the Ghanaian government official responsible for the Ministry of Finance of Ghana. The Minister for Finance since January 2017 has been Ken Ofori-Atta,co-founder and former Chairman of the Databank Group in Ghana. He was appointed by President Akufo-Addo following the Ghanaian general election in December 2016. Kwesi Botchwey stayed in office the longest,first under Jerry Rawlings as Secretary for Finance in the PNDC military government and then as Minister for Finance in the constitutionally elected Rawlings government at the beginning of the Fourth Republic and was in charge of the Economic Recovery Programme under the auspices of the World Bank which oversaw major economic reform in Ghana.
Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu is a Ghanaian politician who was a member of the Provisional National Defence Council and a former Minister for Defence. He is a founding member of the National Democratic Congress. He is the longest-serving Minister of Defence of Ghana,serving from 1985 to 1999,for 14 years.
Emmanuel Owuraku Amofah is a Ghanaian politician and lawyer from Kibi who served as a member of the Parliament of Ghana for Abuakwa Central constituency from 1992 to 1996. He is a former deputy communication minister and deputy tourism minister. In 1992,he founded the Every Ghanaian Living Everywhere (EGLE) party. As a lawyer,he has worked in New York City as the CEO of Parking Ticket Busters,a ticket-broker business,as an attorney at Amofah Law Firm and as a one-time administrative law judge at the city's Parking Violations Bureau.
Daniel Kwaku Botwe is a Ghanaian politician. He is the Member of Parliament of Okere constituency in the Eastern Region of Ghana. He served as Minister for Information and National Orientation in the John Agyekum Kufour administration and also served as the Minister for Regional Reorganization and Development and the Minister for Local Government,Decentralisation and Rural Development in the Nana Akufo-Addo first and second term of office respectively.
Ato Ahwoi is a Ghanaian politician,who served as board chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation from 2009 to 2013 in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government,during the reign of John Atta Mills and as Minister of Energy from 1987 to 1993 during the reign of Jerry Rawlings within the PNDC era.
The Political history of Ghana recounts the history of varying political systems that existed in Ghana during pre-colonial times,the colonial era and after independence. Pre-colonial Ghana was made up of several states and ethnic groups whose political system was categorized by 3 main administrative models;Centralized,Non-centralized and Theocratic states. In the colonial era,the British Empire employed different forms of government among its four territorial possessions in the Gold Coast. Indirect rule was implemented in the late 19th century after its success in Northern Nigeria. From the 1940s,native Ghanaians yearned for more autonomy. This resulted in the several constitutional reforms as well as the creation of the office of the Prime Minister in 1952.
Ato Austin was a Ghanaian politician. He was a member of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) military government which ruled after the overthrow of the Limann government in December 1981. He held various portfolios in the government led by Jerry Rawlings.
