The NAHT is a trade union and professional association representing more than 49,000 members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Members hold leadership positions in early years; primary; special and secondary schools; independent schools; sixth form and FE colleges; outdoor education centres; pupil referral units, social services establishments and other educational settings.
The union was founded in 1897 as the National Federation of Head Teachers' Associations. [1] In 1906, it became the National Association of Head Teachers, from the initials of which its current name derives. [2]
The union's membership grew from just over 1,000 in 1898 to 10,000 in 1947, and 20,000 by the 1980s. For many years, membership was restricted to headteachers, but deputy headteachers were admitted from 1985, and assistant headteachers from 2000. [3]
The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) is the national trade union centre in Scotland. With 40 affiliated unions as of 2020, the STUC represents over 540,000 trade unionists.
The National Education Association (NEA) is the largest labor union in the United States. It represents public school teachers and other support personnel, faculty and staffers at colleges and universities, retired educators, and college students preparing to become teachers. The NEA has just under 3 million members and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The NEA had a budget of more than $341 million for the 2012–2013 fiscal year. The National Union of Teachers was a trade union for school teachers in England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. It was a member of the Trades Union Congress. In March 2017, NUT members endorsed a proposed merger with the Association of Teachers and Lecturers to form a new union known as the National Education Union, which came into existence on 1 September 2017. The union recruited only qualified teachers and those training to be qualified teachers into membership and on dissolution had almost 400,000 members, making it the largest teachers' union in the United Kingdom.

In December 2008 Mr P May, headteacher since 1998, retired and Peter Woodman became the new Head having left RSA Academy Arrow Vale to take up the post. In December 2020 Peter Woodman retired, leaving Mrs Sarah Edwards as interim head teacher. Mrs Sarah Edwards was appointed headteacher in March 2021.
Dame Patricia Collarbone DBE, FRSA is a British educationist, writer and speaker she was the founding director of the London Leadership Centre and of Creating Tomorrow Ltd a consultancy focused on leadership development and delivering self sustaining change programmes. She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1997 for services to Education.
In larger school systems, a head teacher principal is often assisted by someone known as a vice-principal, deputy principal, or assistant/associate principal. Unlike the principal, the vice-principal does not have quite the decision-making authority that the principal carries. Although they still carry nearly the same authority among students, vice-principals do not have the same power on the board. Experience as an assistant principal is often a prerequisite for advancement to a principalship.

Isabel Cleghorn LLA was a British educationist and suffragist. She was the headteacher at Heeley which is now part of Sheffield and she was the first woman President of the National Union of Teachers in 1911.
