History

The party was founded under the name Cuban Liberal Movement (Spanish : Movimiento Liberal Cubano) in 2004. It changed its name to PLNC in 2007. [1] Party members were often intimidated, arrested, or imprisoned by political police. [2]

On February 20, 2014, it merged with the Democratic Solidarity Party, adopting the name Cuban Liberal Solidarity Party (Spanish : Partido Solidaridad Liberal Cubano, PSLC). [3]

Ideology

The National Liberal Party of Cuba was a party of liberal ideology, since it defended postulates like nonintervention of the state and absolute economic freedom. The PLNC struggled to end Cuba's socialist system and respect for human rights. It was open to engaging in a dialogue with all pro-democratic forces in Cuba, especially those of liberal descent. [1]

Since the beginning of liberalism in Portugal in the 19th century, several parties have, by gaining representation in parliament, continued the liberal ideology in contemporary Portuguese politics. But after the initial fervor of the Liberal Revolution of 1820 and the outcome of the Liberal Wars (1828–1834) during the 19th century, liberalism was relegated to a secondary role in Portuguese politics and government and even outlawed for periods of time. The first fully-fledged liberal party founded as such to have a seat in the Portuguese Parliament since the end of the First Portuguese Republic (1910–1926), was the Liberal Initiative, in 2019.
