The Nationalliga A is the highest league level of American football in Switzerland and was formed in 1982. The first Swiss Bowl championship was played in 1986. Below the Nationalliga A sits the Nationalliga B, also made up of six teams. The champion of the B division has the opportunity to earn promotion to the top division through a relegation/promotion match. There is also a National League C. [1]

The league season runs from late March to the end of June, followed by the play-offs and the Swiss Bowl which is held in July. The winners of the Swiss Bowl qualifies for the European Football League.

The Calanda Broncos are an American football team from Landquart, Switzerland. The club, formed in 1991 as the Landquart Broncos, changed its name in late 2008 after the Calanda mountain to show the club's desire to represent a larger region of Graubünden rather than just the community of Landquart. With the move to the stadium in nearby Chur the club was also able to draw larger crowds for its home matches. The club is the best-supported American football club in Switzerland.

The Swiss Bowl is the annual national championship game in the sport of American football in Switzerland, first held in 1986. It is contested by the two best teams of the Nationalliga A.

The Zurich Renegades are an American football team from Zürich, Switzerland. The club, formed in 1983, is the oldest still existing American football club in Switzerland. With seven Swiss Bowl victories the Renegades have the second most after the Calanda Broncos.
