Native Sound System is a British radio show, based in London, and hosted by Sholzstilltippin, and Addy Edgal. It currently airs every Friday at 5PM, on NTS Radio. [1] The show showcase up and coming African music talents, with the aim to document African culture. In 2020, the show relaunch on NTS Radio. [2] On 13 December 2021, The Native launched Native Sound Radio on No Signal's radio. [3]

History

Native Sound System was established in 2017 by The Native . On 23 April 2021, Cloud X festival partnered with Native Sound System to co-curate its line-up. [4] In the same year, DJ Obi, and Native Sound System DJ's, entertained the audience with live DJ sets at the 4th Our Homecoming festival. [5] On 8 April 2022, Native Sound System released "Runaway" featuring Lojay & Ayra Starr. [6]

On 22 December 2021, Native Sound System hosted the fifth edition of Nativeland, titled NATIV5 [7] at Harbour Point Marquee, in Victoria Island, Lagos. [8] To celebrate the fifth anniversary of The Native. The event was headlined by Rema, Amaarae , Styl-Plus, Teezee, SGaWD, and Lojay, with guess performances from, Odunsi, Ayra Starr, Tems, Wale Davies, and Ladipoe. [8]

On 8 July 2022, NSS and Wani released "Wedding Ring", featuring Odunsi (The Engine), Odeal, and BOJ. [9] The song was produced by 44DB, with additional production from DJ Sholz, and Ginton. [9] On 5 September 2022, Native Sound System, premiered the official visual for "Weeding Ring", directed by Emmanuelle Loca-Gisquet and co-directed by Asia Ahmad. [10] On 18 August 2022, NSS released the Nativeworld LP, through Native Records, an independent label owned by The Native. [11]

On 28 August 2022, NSS members and The Native founders covered the Guardian Life Magazine issue titled Building a Sonic World for Artistic Freedom. They discussed their journey, an Alté, being the new mainstream sound, and their support to the community, with Life Magazine author Chinonso Ihekire. [12]

Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, known professionally as Ayra Starr, is a Beninese-born Nigerian singer. She began a fashion career at the age of 16 with Quove Model Management before deciding to pursue a career in music. After covering several songs by popular artists on Instagram, she posted her first original song on her page in December 2019. This brought her to the attention of record executive Don Jazzy, who signed her to his record label Mavin Records.

"Away" is a song recorded by Nigerian singer-songwriter Ayra Starr for her eponymous debut EP. It is the first song on the EP, released in January 2021 by Mavin Records. It was written by Ayra Starr and her brother Dami and was produced by Louddaaa.

The platform was established for cultural exchange, sharing African creativity with the world as a way of connecting international creatives from Africa in the diaspora back to the motherland. The festival provides a venue for workshops, football pitch, art museum, live bands, DJs, and musicians.

Bolaji Odojukan, better known by his stage name BOJ is an English-Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer. He is one-third of the musical group DRB LasGidi with TeeZee and Fresh L, and is known as a pioneer of alté.

Alté is a fusion genre of music that combines elements of afrobeats, dancehall, reggae, hip hop, and alternative R&B. The term was coined in the 2010s by Nigerian music group DRB LasGidi, meaning alternative and "individualistic and non-traditional modes of self-expression" through music and fashion.

Aylø, is a Nigerian neo-soul, and alternative R&B singer, songwriter, and music producer. He came into the music scene with an acclaimed mixtape album Insert Project Name, with lead track "wys?", featuring Cruel Santino. The accompanying music video for "wys?", was released on 26 May 2018, in collaboration with Samsung Nigeria, and HelaBase.

Lekan Osifeso Jnr., popularly known as Lojay, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer. He peaked at number 8 on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart with his song "Monalisa", which features Chris Brown and Sarz. His song is also the most played afrobeats song on Shazam according to Cool FM Nigeria and NotJustOk. He was nominated for the Headies Award for Next Rated artiste for the year 2022.

Native Records is a UK-based Nigerian record label owned by The Native Networks and formed by The Native magazine co-founders Chubbziano and Teezee. In 2022, following the release of the Native Sound System debut long-play Nativeworld on 18 August 2022, the record label was unveiled to the public. The label is home to Teezee, Native Sound System, and Odumodublvck.

Alexander Adelabu, professionally known as Magixx, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. In 2021, he was signed to Mavin Records.

He is best known as a pioneer of alté, and credited for the crossover success of Odumodublvck single "Declan Rice".
