Naveen Garg (born 12 March 1971) is a Professor of Computer Science in Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, specializing in algorithms and complexity in theoretical computer science. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, India's highest prize for excellence in science, mathematics and technology, in the mathematical sciences category in the year 2016. [1] Naveen Garg's contributions are primarily in the design and analysis of approximation algorithms for NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems arising in network design, scheduling, routing, facility location etc. [2]

Academic career

Naveen Garg received his B.Tech. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in 1991, and a Ph.D. from the same institute in 1994 under the supervision of Prof. Vijay Vazirani with a dissertation on "Multicommodity Flows and Approximation Algorithms". He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Max Planck Institute for Informatics, Saarbrücken under the mentorship of Kurt Mehlhorn during September 1994 to August 1996, and a Research Scientist there during September 1996 to December 1997. He joined Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, as a faculty in January 1998. Currently, he is Janaki and K.A. Iyer Chair Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department and also the Dean, AAIP (Alumni Affairs And International Programs) at IIT Delhi. He is also the co-director of the Indo-German Max-Planck Center for Computer Science (IMPECS).

Awards and recognitions

Naveen Garg has secured the Wilhelm Bessel Research Award  [ de ] instituted by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany in 2001. The award is given to scientists and scholars from abroad, internationally renowned in their field, who are expected to produce cutting-edge achievements having a seminal influence on their discipline beyond their immediate field of work. [3] He was awarded the Career Award for Young Teachers instituted by All India Council for Technical Education in 2004. The award recognizes young talented teachers who have established competence in their area of specialization. The Indian National Academy of Engineering recognized his talent by presenting him with Young Engineer Award in 2005 and Indian National Science Academy awarded him the Young Scientist Medal in 2006. [4] Also, he has been elected as a fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore and Indian National Academy of Engineering in the year 2014 and 2020 respectively in recognition of his contribution to engineering and technology.

A professor at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, she is a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize winner in Engineering Science for 2010, IInfosys Prize 2017 laureate in the Engineering and Computer Science category and TWAS Prize winner for Engineering Sciences in 2018. Her research is mainly in the areas of evolutionary computation, pattern recognition, machine learning and bioinformatics. Since 1 August 2015, she has been the Director of the Indian Statistical Institute, and she would oversee the functioning of all five centres of Indian Statistical Institute located at Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, and Tezpur besides several other Statistical Quality Control & Operation Research Units spread across India. She is the first woman Director of the Indian Statistical Institute. Currently she is on the Prime Ministers' Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council. In 2022 she was given the Padma Shri award for Science and Engineering by the Government of India.

Suryanarayanasastry Ramasesha is an Indian quantum chemist and a former Dean of the Faculty of Science at the Indian Institute of Science. He is a former chair of the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit and Amrut Modi Chair professor of Chemical Sciences at IISc. He is known for his studies on conjugated organic systems and low-dimensional solids and is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the Indian Academy of Sciences and The World Academy of Sciences. Jarugu Narasimha Moorthy is an Indian organic photochemist and the director of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram.He was a Dr. Jag Mohan Garg Chair Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is known for his studies on photoreactivity and organization of organic molecules. and is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Indian Academy of Sciences. Venkata Narayana Padmanabhan is a computer scientist and principal researcher at Microsoft Research India. He is known for his research in networked and mobile systems. He is an elected fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Association for Computing Machinery. Sanjeev Das is an Indian cancer biologist and a scientist at National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi, India. He is well regarded for his studies on tumor suppressor proteins. Amit Kumar is Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He received his B.Tech. degree from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1997, and Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2002. He worked as Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs, Murray Hill, New Jersey, U.S. during 2002–2003. He joined IIT Delhi as faculty member in 2003. He works in the area of combinatorial optimization, approximation algorithms and online algorithms. He is working extensively on problems arising in scheduling theory, clustering, and graph theoretic algorithmic problems.

U. K. Anandavardhanan is an Indian mathematician specialising in automorphic forms and representation theory. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, for the year 2020 in mathematical science category. He is affiliated to Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, in 2021 for his contributions to micro-architectural security and cryptographic engineering. Debdeep Mukhopadhyay's research interests include Hardware security, Cryptographic Engineering, Design Automation of Cryptosystems, VLSI of Cryptosystems, and Cryptography. He was elevated to the Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineers in 2021.

T Govindaraju is a professor in the Bioorganic Chemistry Laboratory at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru. The researchers in the Bioorganic Chemistry Laboratory work in areas which lie at the intersection of chemistry, biology and biomaterials science, and in particular, on problems related to Alzheimer's disease, peptide chemistry, molecular probes, molecular architectonics, nanoarchitectonics and biomimetics.

Subimal Ghosh is Institute Chair Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Convener of the Interdisciplinary Program in Climate Studies at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay with research interests in hydrology and hydro-climatology. He obtained PhD degree in 2007 from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore on a thesis titled "Hydrologic Impacts of Climate Change: Uncertainty Modelling", and ME degree in 2004 from the same institute.
