Newtownards is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies at the most northern tip of Strangford Lough, 10 miles (16 km) east of Belfast, on the Ards Peninsula. It is in the civil parish of Newtownards and the historic baronies of Ards Lower and Castlereagh Lower. Newtownards is in the Ards and North Down Borough. The population was 28,050 in the 2011 Census.

Ards RFC is a rugby club based in Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland, playing in the Ulster Qualifying League. It is affiliated to the Ulster Branch of the Irish Rugby Football Union. The club currently fields three adult teams. Three youth teams also play at under-18, under-16 and under-14 levels. There is also a very successful mini rugby section in the club. The club works in close collaboration with local schools such as Regent House Grammar School, Movilla High School and Strangford College, to name but a few, who have provided much of the playing talent at the club to date.
Newtownards Airport is a local airfield in Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is located 8.5 NM east of Belfast. Ards Rangers Football Club is a Northern Irish, intermediate football club playing in the Premier Division of the Northern Amateur Football League. The club was formed in 1949 and plays at Drome Park, Newtownards. Ards Rangers were admitted into the Amateur League in 1962. It lies on the northern half of the Ards Peninsula in the north-east of the county, with the Irish Sea to its east and Strangford Lough to its south-west. It is bordered by two other baronies: Ards Upper to the south; and Castlereagh Lower to the west.

Castlereagh Lower is a historic barony in County Down, Northern Ireland. It was created by 1841 with the division of Castlereagh into two. It is bordered by three other baronies: Ards Lower to the east; Dufferin to the south; and Castlereagh Upper to the west and south-west. Castlereagh Lower is also bounded by Belfast Lough to the north and Strangford Lough to the south-east.
