Nick Baumgartner (born December 17, 1981) is an American snowboarder from Iron River, Michigan. [1] He competes in snowboard cross (SBX) and qualified for the 2010 Winter Olympics. He won the gold and silver medals in the 2011 and 2012 Winter X Games. Baumgartner competed in the 2014 Winter Olympics and won his first Olympic gold at the age of 40 in the 2022 Winter Olympics when he and teammate Lindsey Jacobellis won the inaugural Olympic mixed snowboard cross race. Baumgartner began off-road racing in 2011, winning the Rookie of the Year "Stock Truck" award before advancing to Pro Light trucks in 2012.
He attended West Iron County High School where he was an Upper Peninsula of Michigan silver medalist hurdler. [3] [4] He played football at Northern Michigan University. [5] [6]
Baumgartner placed first in multiple competitions in 2004; he had competed at the SNX at the USASA Nationals and first, at the US Extreme Boardfest. [3] While at the US SBX Championships in 2007, he had placed first at the event in Tamarack Resort, Idaho. [3] Then he went to the World Cup finals where Baumgartner had been moved down to take the second place title. Then he had been moved down again while competing at the Copper Mountain Revolution Tour, where he placed third.
He won a bronze medal in the snowboard cross event at the FIS Snowboarding World Championships 2009 in Gangwon. Baumgartner's first World Cup victory was in Lake Placid, New York in the snowboard cross event in 2008. In 2009 he earned a bronze medal for the World Champion competition season with five Top 10 finishes and two podium finishes. [3] He also won the World Cup in March 2011.
He was announced on January 26, 2010, as a member of the United States team for the 2010 Winter Olympics. He competed and did not medal, finishing 20th. [1] [3]
On January 17, 2011, after not being chosen to attend the World Championship competition, Baumgartner went to train at Copper Mountain, where he was in an accident that broke his collar bone. [4] He needed surgery the next day. [7] In 2011 Baumgartner broke Nate Holland's winning streak and his seven-try losing streak. [4] He had done so with fifteen screws and a plate in his neck. [4] After he had won, he grabbed his son Landon and said, "To see the look on his face, to have your boy proud of you, there’s nothing better." [4] On January 30, 2011, Baumgartner won the gold medal at the Winter X Games XV in Aspen, Colorado. [8]
On December 5, 2013, Baumgartner's selection to the 2014 Winter Olympics team was announced. He was placed on the snowboard cross A team for the Olympics in a coach's discretionary spot over Seth Wescott because of his consistency at World Cup events. [9] Baumgartner had a poor start in the first heat race and he finished fourth, just outside the top three who advanced to the quarterfinals. [9]
Baumgartner also competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, achieving fourth place in the snowboard cross event. [10]
In 2022, Baumgartner won an Olympic gold medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics with his teammate Lindsey Jacobellis for the inaugural mixed snowboard cross event.
In 2011, he began racing in the entry-level "Stock Truck" class in the Traxxas TORC Series. [8] He finished in the Top 3 in each of his first three races, and he held the points lead at midseason. [8] During the summer of 2011 Baumgartner earned himself the Rookie of the Year while competing in the Traxxas TORC Series Off Road Short Course Racing. [7] He moved up into Pro Light in 2012 and finished sixth in the points standings. [11]
In 2013, Baumgartner joined the Stadium Super Trucks, finishing sixth in the inaugural race at University of Phoenix Stadium. [12] He ran six races that year and finished ninth in points. [13] The following season, he returned to the trucks for X Games Austin 2014; [14] after a fourth-place run in his heat race, he finished eighth in the final. [15]

He holds the world record for the most X Games gold medals and most Olympic gold medals by a snowboarder. He has also won 10 ESPY Awards throughout his career in various categories.

Maëlle Danica Ricker is a Canadian retired snowboarder, who specialised in snowboard cross. She won an Olympic gold medal in the snowboard cross event at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, to become the first Canadian woman to win a gold medal on home soil at the Olympics. She is also the 2013 World Champion and two-time Winter X Games Champion.
Lindsey Jacobellis is an American snowboarder from Roxbury, Connecticut. The most decorated female snowboard cross athlete of all time, she dominated the sport for almost two decades as a five-time World Champion and ten-time X Games champion. In her Olympic debut at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Jacobellis won the silver medal in snowboard cross but was unable to medal at the next three Olympics until winning gold at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Jacobellis also won gold in mixed team snowboard cross at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Richard Bernard "Ricky" Johnson Jr. is an American former professional motocross, off-road truck and stock car racer. He competed in AMA motocross and Supercross during the 1980s and, won seven AMA national championships. He later switched to off-road racing. He won the Pro 2WD Trophy Truck championship in the 1998 Championship Off-Road Racing and 2010 TORC Series. He also won the Pro 4WD class at the 2011 and 2012 TORC Series. In September 2012, Johnson won the 4x4 world championship race at Crandon International Off-Road Raceway and later that day won the AMSOIL Cup pitting the two and four wheel drive trucks. Johnson won the 2014 Frozen Rush, the first short-course off-road race on snow.

It tours throughout the United States featuring professional four and two-wheel-drive Trophy Trucks along with a Pro Light class. TORC was founded by off-road racing driver Ricky Johnson in 2009. It was known as the Traxxas TORC Series, owing to title sponsor Traxxas, from 2009 to 2013. It was purchased by The Armory in August 2013. It was sanctioned and officiated by the United States Auto Club (USAC) since its inception.

The Stadium Super Trucks (SST), formerly known as Speed Energy Formula Off-Road, also known as the Boost Mobile Super Trucks in Australia, is an American short course off-road racing series created by off-road racer and former IndyCar and NASCAR driver Robby Gordon in 2013. Sanctioned by the United States Auto Club (USAC) in America with title sponsorship from Gordon's Speed Energy brand, the series utilizes identical off-road trucks that originally competed primarily in American football stadiums, but in 2014 began racing mostly on street circuits and road courses, often in conjunction with the IndyCar Series race schedules.

The women's snowboard cross competition in snowboarding at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 9 February, at the Genting Snow Park in Zhangjiakou. Lindsey Jacobellis of the United States became the Olympic champion. Jacobellis dominated the snowboard cross for almost two decades, winning the X Games ten times and the world championships six times, but her only Olympic medal so far was the silver in 2006, when she started celebrating her win too early and was overtaken at the finish line. Chloé Trespeuch of France, the 2014 bronze medalist, won the silver medal, and Meryeta O'Dine of Canada the bronze, her first Olympic medal.

This was the first time a mixed snowboarding event would be featured at the Olympics. Nick Baumgartner and Lindsey Jacobellis of the United States won the event. Jacobellis added a second gold to the one she won two days earlier in the individual snowboard cross, while Baumgartner won his first Olympic medal. Omar Visintin and Michela Moioli of Italy won the silver medal, and Éliot Grondin and Meryeta O'Dine of Canada bronze.
