Nicholas Francis St Aubyn (born 19 November 1955) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom.
St Aubyn is the younger son of the Hon. Piers St Aubyn MC by his marriage to Mary Bailey-Southwell,and a grandson of Baron St Levan. [1] He went to Eton College,and Trinity College,Oxford,where he was a member of the Oxford University Liberal Club [1] and in the aftermath of the 1975 referendum on UK EEC-membership,President of the Young European Federalists. He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in PPE in 1977;the BA was later promoted to a Master of Arts (MA Oxon) degree. [2] Before Oxford,he lived and worked in Soweto,South Africa,through a placement with the Project Trust.
He worked as a Loan Officer for Morgan Guaranty Trust from 1977 to 1981. [2] He was the head of the London office of Morgan Futures from 1981 to 1984,then the head of the Sterling and Arbitrage Swaps Desk from 1984 to 1986. [2] He was Vice President of Kleinwort Benson Cross Finance from 1986 to 1987. [2] He worked for American International Group's Financial Products Division from 1987 to 1989. From 1989 to 1993,he was Chairman of Gemini Ltd. From 1993 to 1997,he was Chairman of Fitzroy Joinery Ltd in Plymouth. [2] [3]
From 1982 to 1986,St Aubyn was a Conservative councillor on Westminster City Council,representing Little Venice ward. [4] He then fought the Truro by-election in March 1987 following the death of David Penhaligon, [2] when Matthew Taylor comfortably held the seat for the Liberals. He stood again in Truro at the 1987 general election, [2] more than halving the Liberal majority,but slipped back at the 1992 general election. [2]
Following the retirement of long-serving Conservative MP and former minister David Howell,St Aubyn was selected as Conservative candidate for Guildford in preparation for the 1997 general election. [2] Withstanding the national landslide against his party,he held the seat with a reduced majority over the Liberal Democrats,but at the 2001 election he narrowly lost the seat to the Liberal Democrat Sue Doughty. [5] [6] While in parliament,he served on the Education Select Committee and was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Michael Portillo. [1] He did not contest the 2005 election,when Anne Milton narrowly retook the seat for the Conservatives.
St Aubyn married Jane Brooks on 26 April 1980 and they have two sons (Henry and Edward) and three daughters (Kitty,Alice and Camilla). [2] [ citation needed ] His older brother inherited the title Lord St Levan from their uncle the 4th Baron St Levan. [7]

Baron St Levan,of St Michael's Mount in the County of Cornwall,is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 4 July 1887 for the former Member of Parliament Sir John St Aubyn,2nd Baronet,becoming John St Aubyn,1st Baron St Levan. He had previously represented Cornwall West in House of Commons as a Liberal and St Ives as a Liberal Unionist. He was succeeded by his eldest son,the second Baron,who was a Colonel and Honorary Brigadier-General in the Grenadier Guards. On his death the titles passed to his nephew,the third Baron,the son of the Hon. Sir Arthur James Dudley Stuart St Aubyn (1867–1897),second son of the first Baron. The third baron was succeeded in 1978 by his eldest son,the fourth baron,who had served with the Royal Navy at Dunkirk and in a minesweeper in Arctic Convoys during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC). As of 2014,the titles are held by the fourth Baron's nephew,the fifth Baron,who succeeded in 2013.
David Arthur Russell Howell,Baron Howell of Guildford,is a British Conservative Party politician,journalist,and economic consultant. Having been successively Secretary of State for Energy and then for Transport under Margaret Thatcher,Howell has more recently been a Minister of State in the Foreign Office from the election in 2010 until the reshuffle of 2012. He has served as Chair of the House of Lords International Relations Committee since May 2016. Along with William Hague,Sir George Young and Kenneth Clarke,he is one of the few Cabinet ministers from the 1979–97 governments who continued to hold high office in the party,being its deputy leader in the House of Lords until 2010. His daughter,Frances,was married to the former Chancellor of the Exchequer,George Osborne.

He was a popular figure in all parties and had potential to be a front-runner for the party leadership had he not been killed in a car accident. In 2014 a Crowdfunder campaign was launched to record his life's work and impact.
The 1987 Truro by-election,was caused by the death of David Penhaligon,the Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Truro on 22 December 1986 in a car crash near the city. The election was held on 12 March 1987. The constituency was renamed Truro and St Austell in 1997.
