Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma is a South African politician who served as the fourth president of South Africa from 2009 to 2018. He is also referred to by his initials JZ and clan names Nxamalala and Msholozi. Zuma was a former anti-apartheid activist,member of Umkhonto we Sizwe,and president of the African National Congress (ANC) from 2007 to 2017.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is the agency of the South African Government responsible for state prosecutions. Under Section 179 of the South African Constitution and the National Prosecuting Authority Act of 1998,which established the NPA in 1998,the NPA has the power to institute criminal proceedings on behalf of the state and to carry out any necessary functions incidental to institution of criminal proceedings. The NPA is accountable to Parliament,and final responsibility over it lies with the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services.
The Schabir Shaik trial was an important court trial in post-apartheid South Africa. The case,tried in the Durban and Coast Local Division of the High Court before Judge Hilary Squires,established a fraudulent and corrupt relationship between Durban-based businessman Schabir Shaik and former South African leader Jacob Zuma.
The Directorate of Special Operations (DSO),commonly known as the Scorpions,was a specialised unit of the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa formed by President Thabo Mbeki,tasked with investigating and prosecuting high-level and priority crimes including organised crime and corruption. An independent and multidisciplinary unit with a unique methodology which combined investigation,forensic intelligence,and prosecution,the Scorpions were known as an elite unit,and were involved in several extremely high-profile investigations,especially into the Arms Deal and into high-ranking African National Congress (ANC) politicians including Jackie Selebi,Jacob Zuma,and Tony Yengeni.
Jacob "Jackie" Sello Selebi was the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service from January 2000 to January 2008,when he was put on extended leave and charged with corruption. He was also a former President of African National Congress Youth League,South African ambassador to the United Nations from 1995 to 1998,and President of Interpol from 2004 to 2008. Selebi was found guilty of corruption on 2 July 2010 and sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment on 3 August 2010. However,he was released on medical parole in July 2012,after serving less than a year of his sentence,and lived at home until his death on 23 January 2015.
The Strategic Defence Package,popularly known as the Arms Deal,was a major defence procurement programme undertaken to re-equip the South African armed forces for the post-apartheid era. It is commonly associated with the large-scale corruption that is alleged to have taken place during and after the procurement process. Some critics have said that the Arms Deal was a defining moment or turning point for the African National Congress (ANC) government,less than five years into its tenure.
Corruption in South Africa includes the improper use of public resources for private ends,including bribery and improper favouritism. Corruption was at its highest during the period of state capture under the presidency of Jacob Zuma and has remained widespread,negatively "affecting criminal justice,service provision,economic opportunity,social cohesion and political integrity" of South Africa.
Vusumzi "Vusi" Pikoli is a South African advocate and the former head of South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority. He is noted for instigating criminal charges against disgraced South African police commissioner Jackie Selebi and ANC president Jacob Zuma. In 2008 he was suspended from his duties by President Thabo Mbeki,a close confidant of Selebi,and then subsequently fired by Mbeki's successor,Kgalema Motlanthe,who is an ally of Zuma. As such,opposition parties and sections of the press have claimed Pikoli is the victim of two separate political conspiracies. In October 2014 Pikoli was appointed as the Western Cape's first police ombudsman by Premier Helen Zille,whose choice was unanimously backed by the provincial legislature's standing committee on community safety.
Nomvula Paula Mokonyane is a South African politician who is currently the First Deputy Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC). She was the first female Premier of Gauteng from 2009 to 2014 and subsequently served in the national government as Minister of Water and Sanitation from 2014 to 2018,Minister of Communications in 2018,and Minister of Environmental Affairs from 2018 to 2019.
Lieutenant General Richard Naggie Mdluli was the head of Police Crime Intelligence in South Africa from 2009 to 2012. He was replaced by Chris Ngcobo.
Kathleen Margaret Kane is an American former politician and lawyer who served as the 48th Attorney General of Pennsylvania from 2013 until her resignation in 2016 following her conviction for perjury,obstruction of justice,and related charges for illegal activities while she was attorney general. She was the first woman and first Democrat ever elected to the position.
Glynnis Breytenbach is a former prosecutor for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of South Africa and a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance (DA). She is South Africa's Shadow Minister of Justice. In this capacity,she has called for an end to ongoing political interference that has compromised the integrity of the NPA. Her protracted dispute with the NPA over her suspension in 2012 from its Specialised Commercial Crime Unit was covered extensively in the media. In 2017,she published a memoir,Rule of Law,and in 2018 was shortlisted for the National Director of Public Prosecutions post at the NPA,but later withdrew her candidacy.
The Hawks are the South African Police Services' Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI),which targets organised crime,economic crime,corruption,and other serious crime referred to it by the President or another division of the South African Police Service (SAPS). It was set up as the Scorpions by the Thabo Mbeki administration in 2001,but President Jacob Zuma replaced it with the Hawks as its successor in 2008,with many new associates.
Duduzile "Dudu" Cynthia Myeni is a South African businesswoman,a former chairperson of South African Airways SOC Limited,and former executive chairperson of the Jacob Zuma Foundation since September 2008.
Zandile Ruth Thelma Gumede is a South African who has been serving as a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since 2020. She served as the Executive Mayor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality from 2016 until 2019. Gumede is a member of the African National Congress. And the current Chair Person of the African National Congress (ANC) at EThekwini Region.
Shaun Abrahams is a South African lawyer and the former national director of public prosecutions (NDPP) at the National Prosecuting Authority.
Bosasa was a South African company specialising in providing services to government,most notably correctional services. It consisted of Bosasa Group,Bosasa Youth Development Centres,and African Global Operations. The company was liquidated in 2019 after a prolonged scandal about its allegedly corrupt relationship with members of the governing African National Congress (ANC),aired during the Zondo Commission of Inquiry.
Rammaka Steven Mathopo is a judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Before his elevation to that court in January 2022,he served in the Supreme Court of Appeal between June 2015 and December 2021. He was formerly a judge of the Gauteng High Court from January 2006 to May 2015,and he practised as an attorney for 17 years before then.
Jacob Zuma,the former president of South Africa,is currently being criminally charged for proven corruption in the 1999 Arms Deal. He was first indicted on the charges in June 2005,but attempts to prosecute him have been beset by legal challenges and political controversy. He is currently charged with two counts of corruption,one count each of racketeering and money laundering,and twelve counts of fraud,all arising from his receipt of 783 payments which the state alleges were bribes from businessman Schabir Shaik and French arms company Thales.
William Andrew "Willie" Hofmeyr is a South African lawyer and former politician who was Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions from 2001 to 2019. He was the founding head of the National Prosecuting Authority's Asset Forfeiture Unit from 1999 to 2011 and the head of the Special Investigating Unit from 2001 to 2011. Although he was removed from the AFU by Shaun Abrahams in 2015,he returned in 2019 before he retired late that year.
