Norman Music Festival (NMF) is an annual three-day American music festival created by Robert Ruiz, Wilmari Ruiz, Marta Burcham, Jim Wilson, Quentin Bomgardner, Kent Johnson, Jonathan Fowler, and Xian Pitt that takes place in downtown Norman, Oklahoma.[1] Each year it highlights performances from many different genres of music. It has indoor and outdoor venues with musicians performing throughout the days and nights. Founded in 2008,[2] in has grown to include food and art from local vendors. In 2013 an estimated 60,000 people[3] attended the festival, which is free to the public.[4] A business survey conducted by the Norman Arts Council that year estimated that the economic impact of NMF to the city of Norman was over $2.5 million.[5]
NMF is held annually on the third Thursday through Saturday of April; if the traditional festival weekend conflicts with the Easter holiday, it shifts to the fourth weekend of the month to avoid conflicts with other Norman festivities.[6]
Norman Music Festival
Founded as a one-day event, NMF has grown to encompass three full days of music and arts, with attendance growing significantly each year. Beginning in 2009, the NMF logo added a number to the end of its acronym to denote the number of occurrences of the festival. For example, the 2009 NMF was known as NMF2, 2010 was NMF3, and so on.
NMF is organized by volunteers and funded via donations from private citizens and nearby businesses. It is now sponsored by the Norman Arts Council.[1]
2008
The first NMF was a one-day event; it was not known if it would be repeated. An estimated crowd of 15,000 attended.[5]
Known as NMF2, it was held on April 25.[7] Over 25,000 people attended, prompting organizers to consider expanding the number of days in subsequent festivals.[8]
The 2010 festival, NMF3, expanded to two full days and was held on April 24–25. Organizers, having partnered with Dustbowl Arts Market, expanded it to include arts and crafts.[9] NMF3 garnered statewide attention when Governor of OklahomaBrad Henry signed a proclamation declaring April 25 "Norman Music Festival Day."[10] Over 38,000 people attended.[4] The festival chairman was Quentin Bomgardner.[11]

Norman Quentin Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, is an English musician, DJ, and record producer who helped to popularise the big beat genre in the 1990s. In the 1980s, Cook was the bassist for the Hull-based indie rock band the Housemartins, who achieved a UK number-one single with their a cappella cover of "Caravan of Love". After the Housemartins split up, Cook formed the electronic band Beats International in Brighton, who produced the number-one single "Dub Be Good to Me". He then played in Freak Power, Pizzaman, and the Mighty Dub Katz with moderate success.
Faithless are an English dance music band that formed in 1995, with its core members being Rollo, Sister Bliss and Maxi Jazz. Their first album, Reverence, was released in 1996 and their most recent, All Blessed, in 2020. They have sold millions of physical records, and their catalogue was uploaded to streaming sites in 2018. They average almost 3 million listeners a month on Spotify. Faithless' records have charted at No. 1 in numerous countries and they were voted the 4th greatest dance band of all time by Mixmag.

The Big Chill was an annual festival of alternative, dance and chill-out music and comedy, held in the grounds of Eastnor Castle during early August. The 2011 line-up included The Chemical Brothers, Kanye West, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Jessie J, Robert Plant, Calvin Harris, Neneh Cherry, Aloe Blacc, Chipmunk, Katy B & Example. The festival has not been staged since 2011.
Ayalah Deborah Bentovim, better known by her stage name Sister Bliss, is a British keyboardist, record producer, DJ and songwriter. In the studio, she is best known for her work with Rollo Armstrong as one half of the production duo Rollo & Sister Bliss, and particularly as part of Faithless.
The Monterey Jazz Festival is an annual music festival that takes place in Monterey, California, United States. It debuted on October 3, 1958, championed by Dave Brubeck and co-founded by jazz and popular music critic Ralph J. Gleason and jazz disc jockey Jimmy Lyons.
The Zap was a beach-front nightclub and performance arts venue, in Brighton, England that became known in the late 1980s and early 1990s particularly for its acid house nights. It has been described as an "influential ... club which pulled together many of the underground strands of visual art, fashion, music, design, comedy, cabaret and theatre which were circling at the time".
Red dirt is a genre of country music that gets its name from the color of soil found in Oklahoma. Many red dirt acts got their start in bars surrounding Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, a city considered to be the center of red dirt music. The genre also extends to music made south of the Red River in Texas. Outlaw country legends Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson have been associated with the distinctive Texas sound, while the late Oklahoma singer-songwriter Bob Childers is widely recognized as the Father of Oklahoma red dirt music. At one time, the distinction between the two genres was sonically obvious, but by 2008, that gap had diminished.
Diversafest(Dfest), Oklahoma's Music Conference and Festival, was an annual live event that showcased independent and emerging artists and hosted educational music industry panels and a tradeshow. Dfest took place the last weekend in July in the historic Blue Dome District of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The music conference and festival had the purpose of promoting and empowering emerging artists from around the United States. By 2008, Dfest had grown to include more than 140 bands performing on over 10 stages in downtown Tulsa and featuring music industry panels, clinics and a tradeshow during the days at the host conference hotel. Attendance over the two-day event in 2009, was nearly 70,000. However, the 2010 festival was cancelled.
Norman Mervyn Barrington-Foote is a Canadian musician, songwriter, and comedian. Foote is originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He has been nominated for four Juno Awards for Best Children's Album in 1990, 1993, 2001, and won in 2010. He has written for Walt Disney Records, Shari Lewis, CBC's syndicated TV show Scoop and Doozie, and Koba Entertainment, with productions including Nelvana's Little Bear Live, Max and Ruby live on stage shows, Toopy and Binoo in The Marshmallow Moon and Backyardigans Live.
Lee Gordon was an American entrepreneur and rock and roll promoter who worked extensively in Australia in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Gordon's jazz and rock 'n' roll tours had a major impact on the Australian music scene and he also played a significant role in the early career of pioneering Australian rock'n'roll singer Johnny O'Keefe, serving as his manager.
Electric Forest is a multi-genre music festival produced by Madison House Presents and Insomniac Events with a focus on electronic music and jam band genres.
The 2005 Bonnaroo Music Festival took place from June 10–12, and more than 75,000 people were in attendance. New Line Cinema introduced a twenty-four-hour "cinema tent," showing popular and cult films. Wireless Internet access was provided by Cisco Systems. There was a "comedy tent" featuring Jim Breuer as well as some lesser-known comedians and even daily yoga classes. Like 2004, rain marked each day of the festival. The children's area was provided by Kidz Jam.
Eli James is an American fashion designer and founder of the lifestyle clothing brand Ghost Circus Apparel. Previously, he was the drummer for Tim Sköld's industrial solo project, SKOLD; the electronic rock/indietronica/dance project Julien-K; and Dead By Sunrise, the alternative rock side project of Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington. James also performs as a solo artist as The Eli James Experience and with fellow drummer Elias Andra in their joint project E.L.I.
The Garforth Arts Festival is an annual arts festival that takes place in Garforth, Leeds, England. The events take place over a two-week period in June and July, ending with a full-day ‘Playground Party’ on the final Saturday. The festival features a variety of art forms, including comedy, theatre, circus, music, literature, art and dance. Most events are commissioned educational projects involving children and professional artists.
Darin McFadyen, better known by his stage name FreQ Nasty, is a DJ and producer of breakbeat electronic music, currently based in Los Angeles, California, United States. Originally from New Zealand, McFadyen's artistic career has taken him across the world, first as a resident in London's Fabric Nightclub, to multiple tours in Europe and Australia. He currently resides in the United States, where he has become a fixture amongst North American art and music festivals, most notably Burning Man.
Green Corn Revival was an American rock band from Weatherford, Oklahoma.
Giovanni Kiyingi, is a Ugandan folk singer-songwriter and world music artist. He is known for his skills as a multi-instrumentalist who plays the local Ugandan fiddle (endingidi), akogo, adungu, guitar, harmonica, flute, djembe, calabash, congas, drums, and maracas, among others. He was one of the Ugandan artists chosen to welcome Pope Francis to Uganda at Kololo on 27 November 2015.
Jonathan Blake Williams Jr., better known by his stage name Jabee, is a hip hop artist and actor from Oklahoma. His rhymes have been recognized by Chuck D of Public Enemy who has stated “Jabee's music has the potential to change the world” and Sway Calloway on Sway In The Morning. In 2014, his commercial work earned Jabee a regional Emmy.
